Non-Norwich related,so apologies, but I doubt you have ever seen something like this.

I got a bit lucky with the weather today as the forecast said showers but by lunchtime it was pleasantly warm and sunny in NR1 so it was ideal for a ride to the ground. I had to look up the last time we played Plymouth at CR and was surprised to find it was way back in 2008/09 when we were in the same division for four seasons. It was also a bit of a surprise to find we had a pretty dismal all time record against them with only 26 wins and 42 losses. (thanks to Roger Smiths "Canary Companion) From the off we looked a class above and were soon dominating possession with some decent moves down either flank. Sainz neat ball in from the left deserved better than for Sargent to delay his shot and the chance was blocked away with Barnes unable to pick up the pieces. Plymouth seemed happy to contain and slow the game down whenever possible but in the tenth minute a sweeping ball out to the right gave the opportunity to swing a cross into the box. Sorensen appeared to misstime his attempted headed clearance and the ball dipped over his head to Whittaker who stooped to head low past Gunn and give the visitors a shock lead. City should have got back on level terms within a couple of minutes as Stacey poked a ball into space that left Sargent bearing down on the Plymouth goal but a lunging tackle from a defender just got a toe on the ball as the City strker let fly and the only result was a corner. Then Kenny went on a mazey run but when he had worked a shooting position, could only scuff the ball over the bar. The home attack was certainly making chances but they couldn't seem to get things in synch as half chances came and went. Sainz whipped one over but Cooper had everything behind it then Sargent went even closer as a corner came through a ruck of players only for the City striker to sidefoot against a post and a desperate defence scrambled the ball clear. McCallum was fairly lively down the left but couldn't fnd a yellow shirt with a low cross but was then caught out of position as Plymouth broke out of defence. Gibson got it all wrong when missing the ball completely on the touchline and the ball was fed on to a Plymouth striker who took it round Gunn but gave himself too much of and angle and the ball went right across goal and out by the far post. It could so easily have been a second goal for the visitors. The home defence looked jittery and Gibson nearly gave it away again with a terribly feeble back pass only for Gunn to save the day with a block after a sprint off his line. As the half moved into time added, Sainz picked up a loose ball and buzzed past a defender into the six yard box. I thought he would shoot but he fizzed it past Cooper to Sargent no more than two yards out but somehow the City man couldn't get a vital contact and a fantastic chance went begging. At the half I was thinking about our poor record against Plymouth and wondering if it was going to be one of those games that come along every now and then where it just won't go in. If we were hoping for a quick start to the second period we didn't get it as the the crowd got a bit quiet and City couldn't seem to keep any consistant pressure on the visitors goal. The livey Sainz was the main bright spark for the home side but nobody could get on the end of his low cross after a good run and even when he cut inside for a shot he was well off target. Fassnacht came on for Nunez on the hour but Plymouth seemed to be holding on comfortably enough until the sixty seventh minute when City earned a corner on the right. I thought Fassnacht's delivery was rather low but Sargent had pulled away unmarked from the nearpost and he smacked a first time shot through a ruck of defenders and into the net for a deserved equaliser. Where there had been darkness and despair there was now sweetness and light as both crowd and players began to believe. Plymouth tried to slow it down with some niggly fouls but City had now got the upper hand and you had a feeling that there was more to come. With the pressure mounting, City earned another corner on the right and this time it was Sara who whipped over a higher ball that McCallum just got enough onto to divert it past defenders and across goal into the far corner to give City the lead. Plymouth, to their credit tried to give it a go and put on a bit of pressure. After a strong run through midfield a throughball found Hardie in the clear twelve yards out but Gunn was quickly out to narrow the angle and the Plymouth striker couldn't get the ball past him. It was a nervy moment and a big points saving moment for Gunn. Wth five minutes left it should have been alll done and dusted but Sara's wonderful free kick from twentyfive yards hit the inside of post and bar with Cooper beaten and Fassnacht had the simplest of chances to nod in the ball as it bounced up but could only nod it over the bar. He will relive that in his dreams tonight and probably score. After that I was more than happy to see the minutes tick away without further major alarms. I thought Kenny was masterful today and is a cert for POTS but my MOM goes to Sainz who was wonderful in everything he did apart from one wild shot. Gunny also impressive today with some astute positioning. Onward and upward.

They’re up. It happened yesterday. Let the media love in commence. I’ve missed those black and white pics of mick mills to be fair.

Don’t get me wrong, great run of results and some good displays but am I the only one who is alarmed at how awful we still look defensively at times. Plymouth could have had three or four today despite having very little territory or possession . Not one of our defenders can actually mark properly or track runners. I guess the next two games will be the acid test but can we really sustain a promotion/playoff push with such poor defensive discipline?
  5. 4 points
The defence did look a lot more sloppy today than it has recently, I agree. I wouldn't be too alarmed though and hopefully it was just a blip, because it has improved quite a bit since the autumn. Even though Sorensen has done OK since his introduction, I'd feel more comfortable with Duffy in there ahead of him over the next two games. It would sacrifice quality on the ball, but we're likely to be tested more defensively by higher quality teams so probably need the defensive security and leadership that Duffy would provide.

It doesn't stop you voting for him, because he hasn't been bloody awful for about a third of the season. If Sarge had been fit all season he'd almost certainly have won it, no denying that. Sara and Stacey would make up my top three. As has been said elsewhere, he was one of our more consistent performers during our very poor spell in the autumn; he wasn't playing well, admittedly, but the entire team seemed to lack any cohesion or confidence. Kenny dragged us through that spell, and out the other side of it, despite being drafted into unfamiliar positions as a DM, a left-back and a centre-back over the course of the season. Wagner deserves a heap of credit for turning the season around from 'dead man walking' status after that horrendous defeat at home to Blackburn, and McLean has started every single game and been instrumental to that turnaround. Class player, class character.

The presence of Binner fans on this forum tells you all you need to know. No word from anyone for 10 years. Then back they come in the pretence that they want reasoned debate. 5 mins in and they can’t control themselves exhibiting a generation of football where their only success was hoping Norwich lose. Whilst we have won leagues , playoff finals and had some years in amongst the cream of English football , Ipswich still teach their kids that they once won something . They are back again. Tell them all to fück off. I

What on earth has the Post Office got to do with Manchester City? What embezzled funds? No one has been accused of stealing (apart from not paying tax). Apart from failing to deduct tax from a manager's salary the main charge is that the club's sponsors/advertisers paid hugely inflated amounts to Manchester City for advertising. I'm afraid I don't know the figures but to illustrate the point lets say that Liverpool get £100m from their shirt sponsor. Manchester City got £500m but it was paid by a Saudi company connected to City's owners. It may seem simple to you to claim they have paid way too much but they will argue that it is a long term project designed to eventually make them the number one airline in the world. I'm sure your view is they're lying but you have to demonstrate that. That is far from easy and the burden of proof will be very high because the stakes are high. Simply saying it's obvious just isn't good enough. You are looking for swift and efficient justice. UEFA tried Manchester City swiftly and inefficiently. They lost and they lost because the information they used was obtained illegally by a computer hacker and was eventually deemed inadmissible. This time it needs to be done properly. Bear in mind that Manchester City will almost certainly appeal to the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) and may be successful because the documents being used against them were stolen from Manchester City. I would be very surprised if the complete process was finished in another 3 years. The Premier League are dealing with a group of people who take huge exception to being told what to do. They've spent their whole lives doing as they please and getting away with it. They have a bottomless pot of money to use in arguing that they can do what they want and unlike you they don't care about the rules. They think they can buy everything and usually they do. Finally, you think only Everton and Forest have been punished for FFP. That's not strictly true. Leicester were relegated because FFP stopped them for buying a keeper to replace Schmeichel and I'm sure others have suffered in a similar way because they followed the rules.

He left his leg trailing for about 9minutes. He was looking for it. Right decision.
  12. 3 points
Surely we are never going to get through a game without the other side creating some chances. The point is that they had many fewer than us. If it was merely the case of one side or other just dominating the entire 90+ minutes, I’m not sure we’d bother going.

That doesn't stop you from voting for Kenny. Putting him alongside Lee Croft is just farcical. Obviously Oliver Skipp was, and is, a better player than Kenny McLean and was a huge part of our brilliance and dominance that season. But putting McLean alongside Lee Croft as a potential POTS winner speaks for itself in terms of your one-eyed, one-man crusade against one of our most consistent, loyal and versatile players of recent years. I know you're too far gone to ever change your views about him, no matter how well he plays or how many people disagree with you about his efficacy. I absolutely cannot wait to see him lift the Barry Butler, it will be richly deserved.

People like seeing different attributes in defenders. It's a personal choice I guess. I would say Duffy is the best we have in defending our box. I personally liked his partnership with Kenny but we often need Kenny in midfield. Whether we have full backs stopping crosses or central defenders defending their box the ultimate measure is goals conceded or goal difference. I prefer the latter as a stat for the whole team and our ability to defend effectively.

The Binners can’t cope with this success. The cup final approach to a simple league game in December showed that. Their CEO marching around laying hands on the infirm, the “Ultras” and the ceremonial throwing of the beer cans were pathetic in every sense of the word My kids are 30 and 28. In their football supporting time they have seen us win leagues , been to Anfield , Old Trafford , the Emirates in the league and seen us win at The Etihad. Seen us win at Wembley (that’s the new one by the way) Every time we play the Binners in anything meaningful , we win. My kids have an interest in the World Cup and European championship because norwich players are in it playing for international teams They know success and think nothing of Ipswich because they have been nothing but cannon fodder in the few times our paths have meaningfully crossed Imagine a 30 year old Binner . All they will be taught is about black and white success and how Norwich “hent never won nothin” My kids got bored going to civic receptions . No wonder the Scum can’t cope . Most of them have never seen anything like this since their brief sortie in the prem - which ended in Relegation and Administration.

There are no 'free hits' between now and the end of the season?! If we lose on Monday and Coventry win, theyre a point behind us with a game in hand. Both Coventry and Hull and beaten Leicester this season, we should be going there looking to get something

Dimi gets forward just as much but is a slightly stronger athlete getting back. Sam’s not lazy and is more effective attacking. A player who had the strengths of both would be awesome. But that player probably wouldn’t be here…
  22. 2 points
Totally agree, but it works at the moment, we are very much playing a farke way without a Tettey. As you say this tactic gets destroyed in the prem. It just seems some fans don't understand the way we are playing, and keep saying McCallum is lazy.
  23. 2 points
As I see it, in attack, a midfielder drops back between the centre halves thus shaping into a back 3 who spread across the back and providing cover for the fullbacks. With a regular change of the 2 centre halves(half's) and no settled pairing, communication is key. The front players need to close any opposition player to stop the long passes catching McCallum out as well.

Or take your pick because it’s not important. It’s the results that are important. Yes, that's what counts. MANY factors for this happening. David Wagner is a top man. He appears to have come through the worst. Knapper has maybe helped with that, who knows. It really does not matter. The results are there for all to see. Players have good games, bad games, it's life. One thing I would say . There seems to be a breath of fresh air around the place since the ex SD has gone. It feels so much better. (My opinion)

Their season has imploded since January. What was a comfortable auto spot if not the title seems in doubt. Yesterday's loss means Monday is all but a 'must-win' for them. I suspect they'll start like a tornado and it will be all hands to the pumps - but weather the storm, get our shooting boots on and it could be high scoring game. Fancy our chances here but it will shred our nerves..

I’ve never said it before, but impressive refereeing. Unlike all the others, he correctly gave yellow cards for the first deliberate foul regardless of the minute which meant that Plymouth couldn’t keep doing this throughout the match. Another great decision was giving Stacey a free kick when he was knocked off balance outside the box but tried to stay on his feet so fell down a second or so later. All other referees seem to punish players for trying to stay on their feet. Re the penalty it was a great call as the Plymouth player instigated contact, but I was surprised as this is always given as a penalty, even after VAR. It’s the sort of non award that I’d hope VAR would have solved, but of course has made it worse by encouraging players to make contact.

Some more analysis this evening. Worrying trend but maybe not unexpected given the news over the last few years. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/mar/29/hospital-admissions-for-waterborne-diseases-in-england-up-60-report-shows? Extract.... Alastair Chisholm, director of policy at the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, said: “Our research shows 86% of the public want water reformed under the next government. Our river crisis is not only impacting the health of nature, but it’s making people sick too. That has to change. We need urgent reform.” Richard Benwell, chief executive of Wildlife and Countryside Link, said: “Pollution and nature loss are a public health disaster. Billions could be saved every year for the NHS by cleaning up filthy rivers, curbing air pollution and bringing nature back to life. All parties should make big polluters pay and ensure water companies invest in nature recovery for the sake of public health.” Richard Walker, businessman and former Chair of Surfers Against Sewage, who was a Tory donor before switching in January to support Labour, said: “The way the Tories have allowed our coasts, rivers, and streams to become engorged with excrement is the perfect metaphor for the way they’ve treated the country these past 14 years. Labour’s plan will take the tough action required to get our vital utilities back to serving the public interest.

In my opinion there's clear contact. Maybe Gunn did pull his leg away at the last moment, but he's slid in and got nowhere near the ball.

Dimi does n't attack like McCallum. McCallum is lots more positive attacking wise and is happy to go all the way on a break to get a cross in on his own, that drags players out of position but can also leave him stranded up the pitch , surely that is when a midfielder stays back and covers. Dimi is a lot more slower in the build up and needs players around him, he's alot easier to defend against and only needs one player marking him. In McCallums last 4 starts we have scored 14 and conceded 2, I think he has played a huge part in that.

I genuinely don't get why you would think this. Maybe i'm a pessimist but I still have us down as finishing 3rd or 4th. We looked jaded yesterday, were lucky to win and now face Southampton and yourselves before some other very tricky fixtures. I was very confident for the upcoming derby a couple of months back, not so much now. Anything could still happen, I wouldn't even write off Southampton for top two if they beat us.

You definitely have to take stats with a pinch of salt, or at least make sure you're using them to ask the right question. At the risk of triggering people, I'd imagine that expected assists are actually more useful, because you're right that the potential assister is dependent on what the guy he creates the chance for does. My favourite example of this was a brilliant goal we scored against Rotherham in the closed doors season. A fairly aimless ball from Kenny was turned into a perfect pass to Pukki by an outrageous dummy from Todd that took about three Rotherham players out of the game. I imagine Kenny got an assist. But it was Cantwell, by not touching the ball, that created the goal. So yeah, @Sufyellow, totally take the point. I was just struck by the fact that Sam has a reputation for being good going forward but only has one assist. You'd need more sophisticated stats to judge how unfair that is on him.

It does look a bit BNP-esque BUT what better way to reclaim it? After all, if the swastika can be perverted from being a Hindu symbol of good luck to being much more nefarious then what better way of reclaiming a symbol than for something much more reasonable and somewhat centrist?

The lack of communication between the back four is terrible. Nobody seems able to organise and unless Gibson has 20 secs on the ball to decide what to do with it,he panics and looks like a rabbit in headlights. Our left hand side is wide open to pace as McCallum is'nt the quickest and then relies on Gibson to bail him out.Its a worrie with the games coming up.

I had a pretty good view of the 'dive' and I'm sure there was contact. Sainz also handled in our box and McLean had previously been penalised for an identical infringement further up the pitch. As the game went on he gave more and more to us, seeming to book Plymouth players for every foul. He was a proper homer.

What Webber did wrong here was to bring individuals into it at all, regardless of their colour. I think they had every right to be upset because of that and I think he owed the families apologies for it, which he gave, but I see no indication that there's actually anything wrong with what Webber said. Raheem Sterling's dad was killed in a drive-by shooting. The footballers he's talking about came from high crime areas where a lot of kids get sucked into violent crime and gangs. Their careers in football pulled them out of that situation, but they're a lucky minority. The unlucky majority run the risk of becoming the next Stephen Lawrence. It's those people Webber's charitable activites are intended to be aiming to help, so how on Earth does it make sense to brand the guy as prejudiced against the very people he's actively trying to help?! And yes the communication was poor, yes it was insensitive to the individuals concerned, yes they were all owed apologies personally, but racism and profiling is just a ridiculous accusation. And what's more, I think people attacking someone so hard who's very obviously trying to do a good thing for those not lucky enough to be good at kicking a ball around a field, simply because some people are so precious about communications only helps drive a wedge in that ensures people stick to their own 'communities' to avoid all of this bullsh1t.

He's apparently a big fan of The Office and loves reciting David Brent lines - the irony of that and his own Brent-like quotes is remarkable. Having said that, I'm sure he's feeling bad and didn't mean it in that way and we should remember he's only human. Cut him some slack for this one I'd say.
