Itā€™s an interesting idea that people are/were ā€˜Hugill supportersā€™, rather than supporting our club and wanting that club and its players to do well, but there you go. He was bought to give us a different option, and played his part in our best ever seasonā€¦why canā€™t it be left at that, rather than trying to make up some sort of confrontation about something that doesnā€™t exist.

A cause very close to my heart, as many of you know. Very glad to hear he is safe and well. There's a chapter in the Crouch Report dedicated to player welfare (especially for young players released by academies and former players on retirement), so it's definitely something the authorities are seeking to address. Keep talking, and if you're suffering then please try to find the courage to reach out for help. The first step is always the hardest.

There are some stupid posts on here but an overly aggressive OP about one of our players simply to cause an argument is up there.

It's the injury news we have all been waiting for! And yeah, I guess Gilmour is back too šŸ˜‰ Guess the real question is that if we are going to be sticking to two in the middle who do we want to see as his partner besides him?

Except that come the next election voters are likely to ask what happened to that levelling up that was promised, and why should it have been necessary anyway, given that the Tories will by then have been in power for 13 or 14 years, and also demand to know (with the annual inflation rate already at its highest since 1992) how it is the supposed party of economic competence has overseen such a fall in living standards.

    A) Yes B) Yes Drums, to paraphrase Lakey are and will always be tinpot. I've always belittled support that have one, I'm saddened we're now one of them. They are the instrument of support that can't generate natural atmosphere.

Reads like "back in the old days when I was woken up with a belt across my ****, got to school to have the cane and then got seven shades of hell beaten out of me after school never did me any harm, kids these days are too soft!". I'd suggest that you'd probably need to go back to when football became properly professional through the top four divisions. Then things like TV's becoming more common in homes. Then things like football hooliganism, the various disasters both in Europe and in the UK, Hillsborough, race riots in the '70's. Then the premier league going to international audiences, more money in the game, better universal education (which there undoubtedly is) and of course the internet itself. Once upon a time it was perfectly acceptable to shout out strings of words that would now be considered racist / hate speech. We are more aware of the meaning of the words, yet there are more platforms to throw them from. Equally, in the past, saying silly things was met with more severe 'social justice'. Many of these players have been primed to be footballers since they were as young as 6. As folks have said elsewhere, only a small fraction of them make it. That pressure, all that time. Was enough for me doing just my GCSE's and A-Levels, we know our youth players have to do that AND train to be a pro. Also, it's a different type of footballer now. We might joke about players being a bit low on the IQ front, but the game has certainly become more technical. There were jokes about Ferguson and Wenger based around exactly that. Their understanding of tactics needs to be greater. Squads are bigger, players expected to be more adaptable, to be able to take in analysis. Some of the best players we have seen play football have struggled with various off field issues. That can leave them open to abuse. Chadwick spoke out about how much the insults around his acne got to him. I think people think just because they don't always react on the pitch, it means they can handle it. Mind you, there are also those who think they are paid enough money and should be able to take the abuse - as if how much you get paid justifies you getting called what Gilmore has been. I agree with Greavsey, it should be both. Social media platforms should be shutting people down far quicker. Newer platforms tend to be a bit slow too, I know twitch struggles with it. In reality though, clubs primarily only have control of their own players, who they also have a duty of responsibility over. Yes, there are many normal people out there who have to put up with abuse and don't have that support, but should clubs refuse to help their players on that basis? No, of course not. I hope that some people take heed of some of the comments in this thread and consider their own actions. We have recently had a poster share they have had death threats and various abuse from people online, we have had people threaten to physically harm others in an actual thread, and we have had targeted trolling too. Perhaps it's time for folks to realise that we're all responsible of taking responsibility for our own expressions and also the impact they have on other people. Rather than resorting to some pathetic version of "man up" etc.

One of my favourites of his. I just wish I could remember the opening of the Swan joke. A man went into a pub and said to the landlord, "If you give me free drinks all night, I will entertain your customers so much they will stay all night and buy lots and lots of drinks." "Oh yes," says the landlord. "How are you going to do that?" The man gets a hamster out of his pocket and puts it on the piano. The hamster runs up and down the keyboard playing the greatest piano music anyone had ever heard. "That's incredible!" says the landlord. "Have you got anything else?" The man gets a parrot out of his other pocket and puts it on the bar. The hamster begins to play the piano again and the parrot sings along - sounding just like Pavarotti. Everyone in the bar is amazed and stayed all night drinking and listening to the hamster and parrot. The landlord is delighted. "I must have these animals. Will you sell them to me?" he asks. The man shook his head no. "Will you sell just one then?" asks the bartender. "OK, I'll sell you the parrot for Ā£100" the man says. The landlord is delighted and hands over the money. Another man standing next to the man who owned the hamster said, "You're a bit stupid selling that clever parrot for only Ā£100". "No I'm not," the man replied. "The hamster is a ventriloquist".

I recall a match I played in at uni many years ago. It was against what would be termed our local rivals and I was taking some vicious stick from the "supporters" on the touchline because I had long hair. It wasn't particularly bothering me but as I went over to receive a throw in from my "hard man" midfield colleague this bloke really laid into me with what would these days be called homophobic abuse. My team mate hesitated, put the ball on the ground, walked over and, without saying a word, just decked him. He got sent off. I didn't get any more abuse. We won 3-0 with 10 men and I scored two. After the game the bloke came into the bar to apologise, sporting a very swollen nose and a blackening eye. My point being, abuse didn't start with the internet; the method of dealing with it has changed though.

Not a dig but I hate this argument. Just because we were excited about them at the time doesn't mean they weren't bad signings- it isn't our job to scout players and make sure they're a fit for what we need, that is what the scouts and Webber are paid to do.

Oddly enough. you quote me but none of what you said has anything at all to do with what I wrote, which was in short: a) he was bought as another option b) he played his part in our best ever season c) I have never seen a ā€˜Hugill supporterā€™, whatever that is. I think some people get confused by those of us who support the team and want players do do well, rather than finding a new stick to beat the club with all the time.

I often ponder where the Party would be now if John Smith had lived long enough to become PM. Probably centre right, I think he would have ultimately adopted some Blairite policies but may well still carried out a form of tax and spend after years of Tory austerity. Would Brown have taken over from him instead of Blair? He was a believer in Europe and definitely wouldn't have taken part in an illegal war. If only.

The decrease seems to have levelled off at the moment, I'm guessing that's mainly down to the return to school. But as long as hospital numbers stay where they are (particularly given the point mentioned that half of those Covid numbers are actually in hospital for another reason) then things are ok. Speaking personally, I currently know more people with Covid (or who've had it since Christmas) than at any other time in the pandemic, and some of them have felt pretty poorly even when it's the 2nd time they've had it, but (so far - fingers crossed) none of them have been bad in the sense of having to go to hospital. So I'd say it's definitely time to get on with life, being sensible but not worrying about it. I'm planning to go to the Wolves game which is my 2nd game of the season šŸ™‚

Its a Yes from me. We need a bit of life in us a times...were not as loud as we think we are. Plus the core, loud fans should always centre around the younger lot, not the old codgers who frequent these pages. The ones complaining around the noise only listen to Aker Bilk and James Last and I claim my 4 shillings and sixpence. CAFC was loud because of the drummer at times, they they and Palar.se having benefitted from having one. Subnote - Drummer = Yes, Full band = No, leave them to the Coal Pits and Engerland games.

Might be right on the fringes of crowd theory here, but I think there's a chance the fact we've won 3 out of our last 4 games is the reason the atmosphere has been much improved...?
  31. 1 point
Yes, of course, but without drums.
  32. 1 point
As well as the support at Watford being loud and sustained, it was great to hear it being something other than yet another half-hearted rendition of OTBC which had become pretty much all we sang at away matches.
  33. 1 point
I disagree. The drum was at Watford and the support was outstanding - loud and continuous. I thought you approved of supporters getting behind the team.
  34. 1 point
This is a very serious issue, remember...drums don't deafen people, drummers do, I seen it in a documentary on BBC2. šŸ˜¬šŸ¤£ Apples

I've been to grounds where the drum ruins the watching experience. Incessant banging on a drum for 90 minutes (which is what can happen) is just noise pollution. Not needed, not welcome and actually restricts spontaneity by the fact that it is such a dominating beat. Might be a novelty factor to start with, but really it is just a noise. A bit like a firework that goes bang but has no pretty lights at the same time. A noise with no point to it.

The important thing to note is that unlike Britain the EU investigates these breaches and recovers the money. You only have to ask Nigel Farage, he'll be able to confirm it. šŸ˜€

I think you've got that right. Personally, I see very, very little in Tzolis but his performances away from Norwich suggest he's got real potential. It may not have been the perfect time to spend money on him, but would it ever be? If you're confident he could turn into an excellent player (even if not this season) and this is your only chance to sign him (because you're in the Premier League right now) I think it's a well-intentioned gamble. And let's not pretend like the flipside was any less risky. We sign someone more experienced for the here and now, but they're a Naismith, or an Elmander. They don't really contribute. It's a fair argument that aiming for the here and now gave us a better chance of signing someone who would influence this season but it's far from guaranteed. And despite some OTT stuff directed at Webber this season, if we do go down, the likes of Sargent and Tzolis and Rashica still won't be bad financial purchases. Especially if they then perform in the division below.

Idiot Stephen Reicher given free airtime by a ā€œbreakfast showā€ yet again saying through his webcam in a dimly lit room, just to match the mood of what he is saying, being that the virus can get deadlier and the government are doing wrong in going back to plan A. What an utter **** and everyone on his Twitter ā€œthreadsā€ agreeing with him. This is the same moron in June last year who said while we were eating our cereals, that people do not have to take the vaccine if they donā€™t want to, while saying during that same month that the government are wrong in releasing restrictions, so it will get bad again. Yet we all know how wrong his prediction turned out seeing how not having restrictions or so called ā€œcurbsā€ ever since then, has been the right thing to do. This physiological idiot who works for Sage, has no idea on anything. Heā€™s just a lockdown septic who has not got one good thing to say about Boris. Every tweet is slagging him off, nothing positive. Okay, Iā€™m no fan of the bloke just like many on here, but we have all agreed that since 2021, that our government have got all the key decisions right. If that certain organisation that shares its name with a herb and itā€™s cronies had their way, we would be floating in and out of lockdowns with us having no say over it. They should be swept away out of existence like leaves on the floor.
