It's not about 'pleading poverty', it's about looking for good value and shrewd investment. Look at the highest fees paid since the summer for an individual player by the other 'smaller' teams in the league: Watford: Ismaila Sarr, £27m Aston Villa: Wesley, £22.5m Sheffield United: Sander Berge, £20m Brighton: Adam Webster/Neal Maupay, £20m Southampton: Danny Ings, £20m Bournemouth: Arnaud Danjuma, £13.7m Burnley: Josh Brownhill, £9m Crystal Palace: James McCarthy, £3m Burnley and Palace have spent the least out of these teams, but look pretty safe. These figures in isolation aren't worth a great deal as they don't factor in total spend, but it does show that you don't necessarily have to spend huge amounts on players to survive if you have a decent squad and a decent manager. Also, just for comparison, let's take a look at the top six in the Championship, which is where we want to be next season (assuming we don't pull off a miracle): West Brom: Kenneth Zohore, £8m Leeds: A couple of minor undisclosed signings (one from Man City academy and one from Carlisle), plus a few loans Fulham: Ivan Cavaleiro, £10.5m Brentford: Bryan Mbeumo, £6m Forest: Carl Jenkinson, £2m Preston: Tom Bayliss, £2m I've had a quick look at the rest of the Championship too, and there really isn't that much money being thrown around. A few big individual signings (Mbenza to Huddersfield for £11m, Bielik to Derby for £7.5m, Kalas to Bristol City for £8m, Sunjic to Birmingham for £7m, Puscas to Reading for £7m, and a few signings around the £5m mark), but competing for Championship players is the absolute worst business plan when we're in the division itself. We are in an outstanding position. Webber's interview makes it abundantly clear that we won't be looking to sell in the summer; if bids come in from big clubs (ie. the traditional top six plus Leicester, Everton and Wolves, and possibly West Ham/Newcastle at a push) then we'll listen to them, and they'll have to pay top whack to get our top talent. If those bids come in, we'll be able to invest the money sensibly and sustainably, whether on players in the McCallum/Maddison/Godfrey mould, or more young players from abroad in the Buendía mould (plus any talent from our academy, of course). And if the bids don't come in, we'll be in a position where we can attack the Championship with pretty much the squad we've got now, which we already know is good enough to win the division. And for every player that does leave for big bucks, the higher the price will go for the others. My guess (for what it's worth) is that we'll probably lose Aarons and Cantwell to Spurs/Liverpool for north of £50m, but the others will stay... unless someone has already said they want Lewis in the summer, which was the reason we bought McCallum?

Don’t mind that we won’t be in the ‘established Championship player’ market. Possibly the worst value league £ for £. Don’t get me wrong, there is talent there, not saying there isn’t, but if it’s there so long to be called established then it’s probably not good enough for the Premier League - and with a hugely inflated price tag too. I like how we do our business now, good technical players that are unearthed from nowhere - far more satisfying than just flinging £60mil at anything we want to (each to their own I guess though, but I like us not being a ‘Man City’).

There's a big difference between poverty and prudence. We have behaved as if in poverty for a season in order to reset the financials and build prudently from our consolidated base for evermore. We will all live happily ever after. The End.

The controversy is that the Spanish FA are said to have denied Leganes' request to sign an emergency replacement under the same terms. I'd say we would probably be livid if that happened to us.

You can pick Jobsworth up at Market Gates...
  6. 3 points
Why? Established Championship players are going for silly money. We discussed all of this in the summer, with the moves of players like McBurnie and Adams...£17 million and £15 million respectively. When have we spent that on a player? Never...

This. In theory the rule they used is open to any club, this isn’t about big club bias. But there’s no corresponding right for the club who loses a player (every player in Spain has a buyout clause, so the ‘selling’ club has no say in the matter) to buy in turn. Barcelona chose to sell two strikers in the transfer window, they should be the ones who suffer the consequences of that.

I would like more intelligent politicians. We can all dream.
  11. 2 points
It's helped to clear debts, build the academy and facilities and means we are not forced into selling our best. Doesn't mean we will now go spending millions on players. That just isn't the way this club is going to operate and we should all know that by now.

It's about the business model. Norwich is in a sweet spot as long as it is "overachieving" compared to its budget. Norwich's durable competitive advantages are its reputation, loyal fan base, its patient approach, and its ability to attract top staff. None of them rely excessively on being better financed. In fact, if Norwich would start competing financially, it would need a whole new business model. It is possible to diversify more, for example by building a bigger stadium and focusing on marketing. I think there is more to be done with online promotion for example. One thing I would NOT do is rely on Premier League income until the rest of the business is strong enough to take a beating in case we relegate with a PL tier roster.

Exactly. The idea that 'we can't guarantee it would help' is a strange one. What we can seemingly guarantee is what we're doing now does not help, so what is the harm in mixing it up?

Now this is a strange introduction to the board, why set up a new account just to post this on a 5 year old thread?

Thanks for that, Ron. I feel very encouraged after reading that. I think whatever happens this season, we do not need to fear losing all of our best players. Sounds like Stuart’s a bit fed up with people sticking their oar in though, people outside the club trying to decide futures for our talent, perhaps whispering in their ear - fortunately we’ve got a man there who can make our players see the bigger picture, and I’d like to think they’ll listen to him. Must say, I really like Stuart’s honesty - he may not always say what you want to hear, but I never ever read or watch one of his interviews and think he’s being any less than 100% matter of fact and incredibly genuine. Here we are, bottom of the league, and weirdly, I’ve never enjoyed being a Norwich City supporter more than I have been now, under his and Daniel’s guidance. They are very much part of what makes me proud to say to other football supporters ‘Yeah, Norwich is my club’.

PLEASE!!!!! Someone has to make this point - making substitutions is not a guarantee of breathing new life into the side. This season the reverse has tended to be true. Substitutions have done little to lift the side and on many occasions have seen performances peter out and end in defeat.

No Buendia or Cantwell? That would be our player who has the most assists and our second top scorer?

I'd go for that as an anthem. I don't agree that it doesn't matter though. International football matches are won and lost by small margins and we should seek every advantage. I'm sure, for example, that the French are more inspired by La Marseillaise than our players are by a song about a Queen who isn't even watching. If you want evidence of the effect an anthem can have look at this. I'm not Welsh but I must admit it's amazing
  23. 1 point
It really doesn't matter, but God Save The Queen/King is a dirge of a tune with infantile lyrics. I Vow To thee My Country would be an improvement from both points of view.

Thanks, but trying to go with family who already have coach tickets and going from the ground is more convenient for me as working in the city before leaving. However, if anyone who has got coach tickets but now finds Belles Coaches more convenient for them I'm happy to buy their tickets.

Johnson has been part of earlier austerity governments and has now been Prime Minister for seven months without actually doing anything to end austerity. True he's made big promises but as he's an inveterate liar I'm afraid that is just so much hot air unless and until he makes good on some of them and as you say yourself he has no idea, plan, or budget for doing so. I'm also baffled as to why you assume that everyone who criticises the appallingly incompetent and inept governance we've endured over the last ten years from the Tories is a 'leftie' (never mind a Labour voter), or indeed what relevance it has to the issue being discussed. You seem to assume you can just throw it in as a deflection whenever someone debunks the nonsense you've posted. Perhaps I should let you into a little secret...........it doesn't work and your original statement regarding depression of wage levels is still b*llocks.
  26. 1 point
Total b*llocks - even with the current 'unfettered' immigration there are estimated to be 100,000 vacant jobs in social care and the NHS is also approaching the same number of medical vacancies (doctors, nurses, theatre technicians etc). There is one factor and one factor only depressing wages in this sector vital to us all and that is the austerity politics of your government, to blame immigration is rank hypocrisy and economic nonsense (much like the tripe you've just quoted from the Torygraph - think you need to reread the OED definition of 'evidence'!)

The question is whether the risk endangers the financial security of the club. What is often described here a 'a calculated gamble' is actually a risk the poster would never take with their own finances.

Electing an American born Old Etonian doesn't really support the idea that the country wants humble beginnings and a trade union background, KG. That said if Rayner had stood I think she would have had a good chance of being leader. I would have thought it might have led to a too leftie approach for your tastes. I think the last election was as much about many people wanting to see their will carried out by anyone and the Old Etonian you refer to happened to be in the right place at the right time, well after a bit of skullduggery anyway. And being left is what I am. My father was a communist and I am a socialist. But my socialism isn't about taking away from someone to give it to someone else. That causes divide. As a Trade Union Secretary I had to constantly be aware that the worst thing you could do is deny somebody the chance to earn a living. You then strike into the heart of families and communities. I still believe in state ownership of much of this country. I do not see anything wrong with a carefully managed form of means testing. I believe that people expect to be governed. So many talk about their freedom and choice but when it comes down to it can't decide between a latte or americano so what chance have they got in deciding everything from finance to social care. That is not elitist or bolshevik. Most people want everything done for them and to go out and earn and make a life for themselves and family. Why do they have to worry about pensions and health care when they are striving to pay bills, educate their kids and have as much of a stress free life as they can. I am not in favour of continually taxing individuals just to give it to someone else. Two rates are fine with me. Just do away with the excessive allowances and loopholes which means the wealthy will have to pay tax on the whole amount. Then we are all doing our bit equally and without favour. I could type out my manifesto but just wanted to point out that too many people regard socialism as reds under the bed. That is because of media, tradition and downright lies in many cases. There has to be a gathering of mind and spirit in the middle with sensible ideas and outcomes. Not just the continual division that exists.

I think there would have been many more happy posters in the summer if we'd spent 10m on Amadou rather than loaned him.
  33. 1 point
This isn't the point I was disagreeing with. I often find myself looking at the bench on 70 mins thinking a change may help. We all have opinions on what we'd do to improve our chances. The point I was disagreeing with, and is carrying on as a theme even today, is judging Farke's ability as a coach by how he measures up with "what we'd do". Just because we may do things differently doesn't mean Farke is "intransigent"or has taken the team as far as he can. We don't have access to any of the info he is using to make his decisions. The idea that Farke will learn on the job enough to finally be as good as his critics is ludicrous. Just because we don't understand what he does doesn't make us better coaches than him.

HELLO. I’m home secretary Priti Patel, and soon I’ll start deporting even the white ones. So are you economically inactive and useless? Retired You’ve worked your entire life so it’s time to sit back, relax and sign up for hauling turnips out of the ground or a role in the hospitality industry. I hear old people whining about feeling isolated and unwanted, but I don’t see them working as baristas at Starbucks. Student Many students have part-time jobs during term time and full-time jobs in the holidays. That’s not enough. You’re young. You need to be working at least one full-time and one part-time during term, and two full-times and a part-time in the summer. Don’t make us raise tuition fees again. Carer Caring is a job? P*ss off. If you’re doing it for free – perhaps for an elderly relative or sick child – then you’re hurting yourself and hurting Britain. Stop being so selfish and care for somebody else’s 95-year-old mother for a change. And make sure they pay for it. Long-term sick To put it politely, it’s time to either void or vacate the bathroom. A buccaneering, vibrant, low-tax, post-Brexit economy can’t afford passengers. A job at a roadside car wash might kill the seriously ill, but at least you wouldn’t die a burden. I know what I’d choose. Other If you cannot be bothered to specify why you’re economically inactive, then I certainly can’t be bothered to consider your reasons valid. Report to the east coast of Britain. We need untrained people out there on trawlers catching fish and fighting off Spanish fishermen.

To add to my last post, it’s quite clear from Webber’s interview that the way we operate now is all about taking a calculated gamble on a player before they build up a profile and price tag. A bit like snooker, always thinking a few shots ahead, e.g we’ll get that £15mil player whilst he still costs only £1.5mil with the chance of becoming a £15mil player. Of course, it’s a gamble, but as he says himself, every single transfer is a gamble and we won’t get every transfer right because that’s not how it works. But by operating in the fashion that we do, we should never lose vast sums on your ‘Naismith’s’ etc again, and I’m all for that 👍🏼

https://www.rcn.org.uk/professional-development/become-a-nurse To work as a nurse, you need a degree in nursing and you must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). You’ll need to choose which of the four nursing specialisms (adult, children, mental health, or learning disability) you’d like to study. Nursing requires a high level of technical competence and clinical decision-making skills. To develop these, you'll spend half of your nursing degree on supervised placements in local hospital and community settings. If anyone seems unskilled, it looks like its RTB.

And you really believe that the Tory government is all of a sudden gonna become some kind of caring benevolent force? They'll force people into those same low paid jobs, wages will not go up much, if at all. More poverty, more food banks, more money for the rich. Oh how theyve fooled a nation. Turkeys persuaded to vote for Christmas, Suckers!!!!!

Good post. Interesting quote: 'We can't afford established British Championship players.' Just one point - the owners have only ever taken money out of the club that they'd put in, and that process has been completed. Thery've never taken out extra money, so I doubt that is a potential factor.
  43. 1 point
I'm pretty sure you understand how the democratic process works in a Presidential system. It's the same for all sides, too. And Brexit wasn't a farce, we've got our sovereignty back and we are a free and independent nation again, just like most of the rest of the world. And Trump will win in November.

Our priorities are all a bit **** about face really. A bloke that kicks a ball about and earns £25k a week will be welcomed with open arms. A bloke that looks after the sick and elderly but earns £20k a year will be told to sod off.

Absolutely no way in this world that Dortmund would sign Pukki, just not going to happen. They have a ‘no over 26’ rule that means they won’t sign anyone older than 26, apart from in exceptional circumstances - like getting club legend Hummels back. Even if Farke went there, he’d have no say over transfers. Also worth noting that he is scoring below his expected goals level, so I don’t think too many will consider he’s having a very good season this time around - certain not enough to make them want to spend the £20m that Norwich would probably ask for. I can see the situation that King Canary brings up that should Norwich not be challenging for play-offs come January there might be a change in the situation. But even then I can see Prem teams looking for the next Jarrod Bowen rather than a 30 something striker.
  49. 1 point
I agree DV, I really hope Farke goes for it in these last dozen games. We’re currently just limping into relegation off the back of one goal defeats. There’s no point playing for draws, we have to win, so our most creative players have to play. This also includes making positive changes throughout the match to actually go for a win!

Duda was the worst player against Liverpool by a mile. Completely off the pace. Doesn't deserve to start against Wolves. But he will. Cheers, Keith.
