Love that @Barham Blitz Honestly? I don’t know yet. I really think that there is a myriad of factors. I would be lying if I said I don’t think a little bit of managing upwards is playing a role. Tzolis. Sargent bigged up. Idah repeatedly defended. Try to get value out of Dowell and Onel. Both nice sometimes, both flawed. Wagner is very straightforward and quite black and white with the players too. They are all getting a chance. Tzolis MUST come good. He, Sargent and Rashica are the farm bets. The Buendia trade. The Premier surplus. Idah is primary back up, a valued asset, a great potential…or he isn’t. Somebody had to find out sometime. Reintegrating Gibson, making Hanley central, pushing Gunn forwards. These are decisions that have to be made because contracts can’t be cancelled, players are paid too much for any team that would want them…..others are not desirable. He is giving all a chance. Though it often looks a bit thrown together as you say. I would look to play Gibbs and Sorenson more often for structure. I would not play Onel ‘wide and open’ though he can be dangerous if you can create protection for his strategic weaknesses. Dowell is fine at what he does - you might argue we need him with our limited creative resources currently - though that cannot be with Pukki-Sargent-Idah (or even two of those I would argue) Pukki has been protecting himself for months and he has been pushed to announce he is leaving now. Others have had - and must have their chance to inherit the crown. There is little in the way of dynamic ascension to the throne. The hole he leaves is gaping. Honestly? Webber should be watching it all through his fingers. No wonder he has employed his old friends. Switching 2021 Buendia-Skipp for this and £60m gone is very, very poor indeed. Parma

I'm there. Great half, if they'd have got a second I'd have been tempted to call it a perfect half of football.

Didn't he bring in Pukki in the first place? I feel that answers the question. People seem to forget so many things on here for convenience of argument.

Live for today, tomorrow can wait. All that matters is getting 3 points from each remaining game - that will have a far greater positive impact on this club than trying to second guess who wants to stay, who we get in, who may get injured and god knows how many other factors.

Sinani was a cheap gamble from the Luxembourg league that didn't pay off. No harm in trying, but he's nowhere near good enough and should be first out the door in the summer alongside Hayden and Byram (can three people fit through a door simultaneously?). And excellent choice of curry house, sir. I love those guys in Ali Tandoori... we actually had an Ali banquet for our Christmas meal this year (we're not sticklers for convention chez Wolf).

"Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden has joined Championship side Norwich City on a season-long loan. The Canaries will have an obligation to make the deal permanent should specific performance-related criteria be met throughout the 2022/23 season." I think it was if we were oromoted. And I doubt his limited playing time would mean we had an obligation to buy or even sign. When playing he did not seem anything special. If he was signed on a free and given a Championship size wage, then perhaps. But along with a number of others he needs to head off into the sunset. Perhaps he could join Byram.... in a game of Hayden sick

It will take Idah the whole of his 5 year contract to match that.
  13. 3 points
I'd be happy to wave both Sargent and Idah goodbye in May and find a couple of established strikers that can actually score goals.
  14. 2 points
What? If Dowell leaves on a free it’s criminal. We’d never afford a replacement close to his ability at this level.

Thats a bit of a shame as i don't agree with banning people unless they've been victimising someone , id say its six of one and half a dozen of another in most circumstances when peeps get into a ding dong. Getting a bit sweary and abusive is just how some people react to being tickled, not great but banned? Maybe im just an old bleeding heart liberal, which reminds me ....must keep an eye on the greaseboy at t' mill , hes being a bit liberal with the greasegun, bleddy seven year olds , have to watch 'em like a hawk , wasteful beggars.

    1) Chelsea situation isn't all on Potter 2) Potter was the sought after English manager only a few months ago. We'd be crazy to not want him here.

We need a restart, but not a total clear out, in my view. There seems to be a malaise in the squad, presumably as a result of the two relegation seasons, and a lot of players seem to be playing below their potential. But I don't think that means we ship everyone out. I think good signings down the spine of the team, CB, DM and up front, could give us the impetus we need, and could see a few existing players reborn. And by good signings I mean players with leadership qualities who can give the dressing room a lift, as well as being good players. On the specific subject of Dowell and Onel, I too would be looking to keep them both. I think you could make a case for saying that they were our most effective players under Wagner.

Of course there have been worse seasons in terms of league position and level of football played. But this season has been awful in the sense that it has marked the end of an era and the end of a dream. We had a big chance and we blew it. Almost nothing is left now of the style and personnel of the 18/19 squad, and probably only McLean after the summer transfer window.

It is virtually impossible to compare strikers with different attributes in different teams from different eras. I'm only old enough to remember as far back as the Channon / Deehan sort of time but since then we've had a few great strikers who have all built their own little bit of Norwich history and all for different reasons. Deehan was my first footballing hero. Ashton probably the highest quality all round player but only here for a short time. I've long argued with non-City fans that Sutton was a criminally underrated player who could play practically anywhere and still shine. Cult heroes like Fleck and Iwan. Big Grant who was nothing short of talismanic during his time here. But Pukki stands out in his own in one sense. In my time as a supporter (too young for MacDougal) I've never seen a City striker with his level of movement and intelligence. He wasn't the biggest or the quickest but his ability to find that yard and then to finish was a different class. He was the finishing touch to the rarified air that was the peak Farke era and for me will always be synonymous with probably the best football I've ever seen us play. He was different because we as a club were different - a free transfer reject shooting us to two promotions in a team that were for a time a beautiful anomaly in an increasingly uniform footballing universe. So you could argue that he wasn't the greatest striker we've had. In the cold light of day I may even objectively agree. But for me he just embodied that brief period where it genuinely looked like we could achieve something really special by doing things differently. And for that - for me at least - he will always remain a City legend.

Last year, Graham Potter was being hailed by many as the best English coach around and one of the frontrunners to be the next England manager after Southgate. After a bad experience at one of Europe's top clubs, we now have people on the Pink Un saying they wouldn't have him at Norwich in the Championship. The world of football is so fickle at times it's ridiculous.

Idah is no longer a young prospect. If anything makes me sadder than the announcement of Pukki leaving, it's the thought anyone sees Idah as being the guy to replace him!
  30. 2 points
We didn't get rid of. He has decided to leave. It would have been nice if you could at least have recognised the huge part he has played in our last five years rather than just making your spiteful little comment. And we wonder why footballers have no loyalty to clubs these days.

A modern combination of two players. MacDougall the best pure finisher I've seen for Norwich City, and Pukki not quite there as far as that goes, but he also has Phil Boyer's intelligence and ability to hold the ball up, commit defenders, and bring others into the game. I suspect opposition defenders hated playing against him at his peak, which sadly has passed. A lot of football miles, for club and country, on the clock in the last few years.

Sinani coming off the bench to score or assist a crucial goal, is as likely as me taking Beyoncé for a bite to eat in the (excellent) Ali Tandoori on Magdalen Street.

Right here we go for the Blackburn picks. My strategy is to cover as many options as possible and hopefully get a few of them to stack up. Apologies if your pick hasn’t been chosen. £1 on pukki anytime, £1 on Sargent anytime, £1 on Sara anytime, £1 on Sam Gallagher anytime, £1 on Ben Bereton anytime, £1 on Sammie Szmodics anytime, 50p on Hanley anytime, 50p on McLean anytime, 50p on Norwich 1-0, 50p on Norwich 2-0, 50p on Norwich 2-1, 50p on Norwich 3-1, £1 on a draw, £1 on a Blackburn win. Hopefully this will guarantee we get something out of it if Norwich do lose. Just in case you don’t see the message I’ve sent you Eddie I’ve transferred the extra quid for these.

He also said: "Obviously we won’t get rid of Wagner" and "Just a bit of silliness, but would you take Potter?!" I think that both of those comments show that it was a hypothetical question rather than a serious one. If the question was serious, then of course we're not going to sack Wagner to get Potter.
  41. 1 point
If you want to know why Villa would want him look at the goal that Watkins scored at Leicester earlier in the week. Suggestions that Pukki is finished are very much wide of the mark. All this season has proved is that he can't run channels but no one would be stupid enough to sign him for that. But he's well worth a year as a back up. He is still fit and despite what some claim on this forum, he's very quick over 5 to 10 metres.

It's more fickle to talk about managers you'd rather have at the club when the current is only a few months into the role himself. I would not replace Wagner with Potter. If we were managerless it's a completely different proposition.

Massive player. Canary Legend. All the best Teemu Pukki and I'm glad to have seen you play at least once and what a brilliant goal you lobbed in.
  47. 1 point
Yes, I agree with that. Perhaps the closest to him in that regard was Flecky, who was a very clever player as well as a goalscorer.

As always Parma, very little that i disagree with. Wagner has been pretty consistent with this rather gung-ho ratio of predominantly attacking players over defensive players though. I raised an eyebrow for his first few games which had a front 5 (in whichever formation you felt they were arranged in) of Pukki, Sargent, Hernandez, Dowell and Sara, with two attacking full-backs and McLean dropping into that deep CDM / Quarterback role. At times that resembled a 2-1-2-5 formation with predictable results in transition: Dowell and Hernandez may not be strikers in the same sense that Sargent and Idah are (or at least are supposed to be) but you probably wouldn't suggest that either would be who you'd choose to contest a 50/50 ball or be in the correct defensive position to snuff out a counterattack if your life depended on it either. So I would amend "very hard to discern a meaningful defensive structural cohesion to that tactical and structural line up" to a frank admission that there is no defensive structural cohesion to our lineups. Great if we score a couple early on. Less good otherwise as it is pretty straightforward to play against, either through a high press or a rapid counter. My question then @Parma Ham's gone mouldy would be why ? Are we trying to put young attacking players into the shop window ? (in which case, why play Marquinos - a loanee ?) Are we trying to give Sargent and Idah gametime ? (in which case why is neither playing in their perceived best position and why play the patently departing Pukki there given that whilst he may be our best player the system still isn't suited to him, he isn't currently pulling up any trees anyway and he is evidently hampering the development of the two players we appear to be reliant on replacing him with ?) If there is a pattern to be discerned, it is certainly eluding me at the moment - I can't believe that Wagner genuinely believes that this approach with our squad is going to get the best out of them but I'm genuinely unsure as to what he is trying to do. Unless you suggesting that the club as a whole are deliberately avoiding being promoted again ? Whilst I might understand that there may be a quite real and justified subconscious concern amongst both the players and the fanbase about another Premiership campaign given the demonstrable weakening of the squad over the past couple of seasons I can't believe that the club as a whole wouldn't want the funding that comes with even immediate relegation given the state of the clubs finances. Unless you suspect that Attanasio's investment might be more geared towards an incremental rebuild than trying to fund a Premiership campaign ? Or am i just missing something ?
