Exactly this Dylan. The problem is it's harder for the everyday fan to pin a goal conceded on the fact you kicked it long - there's obviously always going to be one or two other events before that goal is conceded. When it's conceded from playing out, it's obvious so fans go "Boo, playing out, concedes goals". It's my pet hate with the fans around me in the Barclay. I'll repeatedly bang this drum (somewhat ironically with the barclay drummer on bail or whatever). If we play out from the back and "nearly" give it away the Barclay immediately start booing and shouting at Gunn to hit it long. They don't even understand the concept that Gunn or one of the CB's are holding on to the ball to invite the opposition to press them. It's the easiest way to create space, pass beyond the first man and you've got some space. Even against Sheffield Wednesday, where we created a couple of good chances from playing it out from the back, the fans around me sarcastically cheered when Gunn hit it long. What happened? Well, it came straight back at us and they had a shot (albeit a poor one). I guarantee you those fans still think they're right. There is a fair argument that with Baath it's impossible because he can't even pass square with his weak foot. But with Duffy and Mclean it's definitely plausible. Gianoulis is also useful for this, because he has a tremendous strength in bringing the ball inside and dribbling beyond the press. Re Brighton, it was funny listening to some old-school pundits saying "this is what happens when you play out from the back and you're not a Man City". Absolute rubbish. Brighton have been a hugely successful club playing out from the back over the past how many years? And because of one mistake they should rip all that up?

Well to be precise, some fans who'd never heard of him and never seen one of his teams play wanted him. 😉

The company I work for does a “giving day” every year where we can go and volunteer for a good cause. This year the main event in the UK was to help a hygiene bank in the City. The vicar of the church the charity is coordinated from (who is also a CFO and tries to encourage bankers to give a little of their bonus back) gave us some background about why the charity is needed and some of the stories of people they have helped. I very quickly cycled through shock and sadness to anger and shame, as you say @horsefly, to hear what people have to cope with the a country with our resources is utterly shameful. To have to wash your children with washing up liquid, to go to job interviews knowing you are smelling because you have nothing to wash with, or clean your teeth, it’s unthinkable in this day and age in the UK. Tory Britain.

Can we agree to ban all binners on here? Please? Would be a great Christmas then Even more annoying when the think they're being smart by pretending to be one of our own even though they always STINK of bins and make it far too obvious and give it away I mean their forum doesn't allow any of us on it so its only fair right?

Coaches have analysed matches and found that when the goalkeeper kicks the ball long his team loses possession more often than not. With Norwich City that's 80% of the time. So kicking it long is more likely to result in eventually conceding than playing out from the back. That's not an opinion, it's a fact based on statistical analysis. Obviously some teams are better at it than others and it's noticeable that we have been way better at it with Kenny at the back. There is a lot of data and analysis on the Internet https://www.espn.co.uk/football/story/_/id/37576665/why-playing-back-brought-mixed-results-premier-league-clubs

Disagree. How many goals are conceded due to it rather than scored? There's a reason nearly all progressive, good teams even at Championship level persist - because statistically it's much more likely to result positively.

I always thought they were harmless until I saw the Rebecca Vardy documentary. A couple of months ago they knocked on my door and a child of about 4 or 5 made a little speech. I found that a bit disturbing. Anyway, today sees the 'shortest' day of the year. From now on it gets lighter and better, leading up to us beating Ipswich in the playoffs

But now you've drawn attention to a thread I would've probably ignored and I'm intrigued as to what was about... I'm going for a lego shortage, a ban on Hawaiian shirts or everybody being forced to listen to Coldplay.

It's difficult to take seriously anything any politician says. All they want is votes and history tells us they generally don't fulfil their promises. What they say and what they do are two entirely different things. Chances are that if any potential Super League is deemed legal, the government - whoever PM is - won't be able to do anything about it.

And you just know when Labour get into power next year the Tories will then spend EVERY penny they have to ensure most mainstream media blame the Labour party for the state the country is in and take zero responsibility for it

Good ball runner, instinctively good finisher, game awareness and distribution not so good. Needs a good coach!

Where you lose possession is important, but so is how often you lose possession. If you're hoofing it forward repeatedly with no chance of retaining possession, you're just inviting non-stop pressure because it'll be coming straight back. I think our approach to playing it out from the back at the moment is generally pretty sensible - it's clearly our preferred approach but the players will go long if they need to. But we need to be more joined up so we're making sure that when we go long, we have someone to aim for (e.g. Barnes) and other players looking for the knock down or flick on, or we're playing it into space for a pacey player (e.g. not Barnes) to run onto. It's when we're just giving it away that I find it frustrating.

Saw this stat on Twitter the other day. Only two players aged 21 or under in all of Europes top two divisons this season have scored more than ten goals this season. Those two players are Johnny Rowe and Jude Bellingham. Think that says all you need to know about Rowe.. No pressure on him with the comparison huh? 😉

Interestingly there have been quite a few who would happily tell you that other than his two goals against the binners he did not look that great against them and if anything came across as a little soft and weak, given he seemed to fall straight to the floor at the lightest of touches. Since his injury he has come across a tad lightweight, but at the same time he clearly still has this finishing touch of class. He's one of those players who can be quiet for a while and look a little off but then out of nowhere will seemingly just come up with magic and get a great assist or get a good goal. Of course I myself did think he had something good about him well over a year ago and made a thread about how I thought he seemed to have something rather special about him and thankfully it did seem I was right The real thing I would like to see is to wait until the end of the season to judge him. We are only half way through, still a long way to go. One more thing I will say is that he clearly loves being at this club and it's clear he just loves being able to play football. He's not one of those grumpy players who would keep their head down and never really shows much passion or spirit during a match you really can tell he just loves to play which is always a good thing to see from a player for obvious reasons.. Just comes across as a good decent guy. In some ways I could say he's like the opposite of Max Aarons in that regard, no offence intended to Max of course as he was a great player for us it's just you can tell he was never really that emotional of a player and did often come across a little sulky and moody at times in comparison to Rowe who just seems to always be smiling and having a good time on the pitch

Good point regarding variation. It is the spice of life. The unfortunate fact is that Krul wasn't as good as Gunn with his feet. His chipped passes to Max on the touchline never ended well. I have printed several copies of @hogesar post and will hand them out tomorrow. If you hear a lot of f** ing and blinding in the upstairs River End tomorrow it means the f****ing bloke next to me has f***ing read it. He'll say f****ing hogesar is a f***king idiot. Then we'll hit it long and f***ing lose it....

I couldn’t possibly comment on who you are referring to but if I were to randomly pontificate I’d say that the only thing sadder than hanging around on a forum of a team you have no connection to and don’t support in any way and posting is hanging around on a forum of a team you have no connection to and don’t support in any way and leaving little laughing emojis on posts of people that have “wronged you” …At Christmas…

These aren't the posts you had planned for here when you joined in August. Last weekends result meant a rethink and these are a poor effort even by binner standards. Maybe next April... But don't hold your breath.

That's the issue CN, it can't be our ONLY way to play, but we sure as hell need to get quicker whilst doing it, we're too slow and ponderous with it.
  32. 2 points
Playing out from the back is great when you’re good at it. I don’t mind that we persist with it at all, it’s the only way we’ll get better at it. I do wish we’d mix things up sometimes with the odd quick throw and long kick just to lose a bit of predictability.

Good God! We are supposed to be the 6th richest country in the world. But don't worry, the government have removed the cap on bankers' bonuses, so at least they won't starve.

There was a quip from a Tory grandee about Heseltine that he was obviously an arriviste because he had to buy his own furniture, as opposed of course to inheriting it all.

And what of us in those fourteen years, apart from 3 league titles, a big shining trophy at Wembley. And while the bin lorry was visiting Accrington and Fleetwood, City were visting Anfield and Old Trafford. Full houses verses 12,000 in the cowshed of suffolk. Were you to stretch that to the 20 years the binners have been outside the PL, then you can add yet ANOTHER league title. Poor binners.so long in their neighbour's shadow. Even Hank Marvin hasn't been in the shadows as long as the binners.
