I go fishing once a month off Littlehampton, and in fact went out yesterday. Our skipper, who I have known for over 20 years is ex commercial, and his views are very interesting. He freely admits that when you are hauling in the nets or emptying the pots, you only think about today, and that is common amongst their community. He actually agrees with quotas and regulations, because without them, there would be very little left. We have seen a massive increase in Bass stocks, due to limits on numbers, the herring are back in massive numbers and the codling are back along the south and east coast. The main greed, and therefore danger to the fishing industry, are the few families and corporations that own most of the licences and quotas, and these are not your working class people. This link gives an insight into the fishing industry. https://www.greenpeace.org.uk/news/uncovered-rich-list-codfathers-dominating-uks-fishing-industry/

Just for those who decided to spout rubbish based on no knowledge - Lineker won his case against HMRC so he is not a tax evader. The separate issue on rights and wrongs of loopholes and tax law that could easily be tightened are for the govt -who could easily do more but simply don’t want to, largely as they/their mates are using them. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-65103265

Funny isn't it. Hanley has always been our best defender at this level since he joined the club yet people wonder why he's in the team every week.

I’m not a fan of this type of ‘award’. Of course the young lad is definitely worthy of winning, as are all the nominees - and probably many more besides; supporting the club takes up a lot of time, money and effort for all of us.

I see this statement a lot on here from the naysayers, so will nail my colours firmly to the mast. Before Brighton had the Amex, they barely reached an average attendance of 15,000, now they have little change out of 30,000. Same for any club that has expanded their stadia in recent years outside a few that slump back to League 1 or 2 struggle. And as the Binners have proven (Sunderland before them), even in League 1 for an extended stay with a bit of hard work on the marketing front and the giving away of cheap tickets to potential new fans, you can recover the attendances. Look at Bradford in League 2, with average attendances that many a club with an underdeveloped stadium in the Champs envy (well also in the case of B'**** in the EPL too!). Replace the City Stand, allow a few of the ageing Lower Barclayites to re-capture their excitement through the new development and facilities they bring by allowing them to relocate to the new City Stand to eke out their dotage, heavily market their old seats at a new audience and 32,000 becomes the new norm! All this pissing about becoming an established club is becoming the ultimate chicken and egg argument, where I strongly believe investing in the stadium will bring the sea change on here in the club's fortunes that we are all craving for. When Attanasio does finally take over and makes the replacement of the City Stand a priority of the club through the wider access to cheap finance he will bring, within two to three years even the naysayers on here will say why didn't we do it earlier, and will criticise the old regime for not taking advantage of the Colney Bond success and the low interest rates that existed prior to this year, for not doing it sooner.

Just to be clear. The expansion of the ground should only be taken on if it doesn't impact the playing budget. As such it doesn't have to involve, or have an impact on, Webber and his role at all, AS LONG AS he gets his job right more times than wrong. The funding of the stand should be funded through loans which are repaid from the future income generated by that stand, irrespective of success on the pitch. If its designed right this should be eminently achievable. One assumes Attanasio & team have the right skills and experience to achieve this, leaving Mr Webber to look after the playing side and Mrs Webber to oversee delivery of things off the pitch.

Purple does make a very good point - it wasn't that long ago that we managed without the South Stand and I think I am right in that the capacity of the existing City Stand is less than lost at that time. We will probably get dispensation to limit away fans during any re-build period. Fulham are an example of a club who bit that bullet recently and my reading of the experience is that there was no real dissent. Both Purple and RN Lim have touched on this. Whilst the potential of retaining the existing seating in the City Stand doesn't make long term sense, one would expect that any new City Stand could be developed in such a way that a top tier could be built first behind and over the existing stand (by god it is small enough, check what has happened at Anfield this season) before the old stand is demolished and a new lower tier constructed (the extension to the Main Stand at Hillsborough was similarly constructed as a new build at the back and over the old stand which was retained apart from the roof). The question becomes a financial choice, go for broke and forego ticket income from 3,500 fans for a season and half (c. £5m) or add £5-10m to build costs and extend the build period a bit longer. I would expect as Big Fish comments the cheapest route would be taken, but Attanasio's approach at Milwaukee suggests he might be bolder than that! Much will depend on the finance for the re-build. Given that a UK high street bank has recently financed the acquisition of an office block for the company I am a director of, plus rolled up existing loans in a new loan, at only 2.5% pa (!, yes even I was astounded by their generosity given the current state of banking, but it is a long term loan), I'm sure Attanasio can find similar low costs structures. There are deals to be done if you are open minded and / or aggressive with your negotiations. Perhaps Tifosy can be utilised again.

You could have written to Connor Southwell again to express how deeply upset you were by it, like you did a couple of days before, a few minutes after calling somebody a 'snowflake'. Nobody likes a snivelling little grass.

All this fishing stuff. Very 'symbolic' and romantic but really very very small economic beer. I actually, as i think l may have mentioned years ago, actually come from an old fishing family (now the most expensive village in Norfolk) but worthless then. The family had stopped well before I was born but I knew all the stories, had a few nautical things and even as a teenager occasionally helped out. My parents were really the last 'link' to those days and we're still all buried in that round tower churchyard. However, It always came in handy when in Japan and my colleagues there would try and 'scare' me with the sushi - they very rapidly realized I was the fisherman not them! Townies 😉. Dancing prawn anybody? Sure there is still a small inshore fleet - but we need to be honest in that what we catch in the UK is generally not what the population at large want. I like kippers, mackerel and rock but hate skate, sole and so on. Fish'n'chips is haddock or cod. Whelks anybody (that's historically where we made some money)? Fish restaurants are very much a snobby middle class thing away from the coast. Generally what we catch here today is for export (now badly compromised by being outside the EU - loss of easy markets). All that said I agree fisherman (the world over) are more often than not their own worst enemies - overfishing with no self-control, bending the 'rules' and of course blaming everything and everybody else. Most of the issues with our 'little boats' are of course the fault of our own government in how it divvied up quotas (mainly to the larger more commercial fishers) and the comment about the sale of such quotas to 'foreigners' plus economies of scale all ring true. How many 'trawlers' post the 'cod war' became rig support vessels? The world moves on but it's nice to live in the past. If only we still had all those little properties in the Burnhams.... kerching!

This is the link showing the polygons. Each polygon is taken from the mid-point between each league club - i.e. Norwich's polygon is made up from lines joining the midpoint from Norwich-Peterborough, Norwich-Cambridge and Norwich-Ipswich. Back to the main point of the thread. Why do we get ingrowing toenails but not ingrowing fingernails? And more to the point, why do we have toenails? What useful function do they perform ? Apart from amusing the dog when it treads on them first thing in the morning 😱

I hope so LYB. A lot of what you may think of lefties or folk attacking the Tories (that you find so annoying because it somehow excuses Labour) is borne out of frustration. These threads support people to vent their frustration. Sometimes it might be "wrong" in terms of complete accuracy or it is funny or very very relevant and biting. The one thing that unites us all, I'm convinced, is that we know stuff / life / politics isn't quite the way it ought to be. And for many, the trajectory is the wrong way and running away from us at quite a pace (thinking of the moat recent years). We all want something better. So it's okay to be angry with lots of things we read. I believe most folk are sensible enough too not to totally believe everything they read. Or what is posted. When we realise folk post from their own sense of frustration it is very easy for us (me anyway) to feel empathy with all. Don't always agree with things said or views expressed but at least one can understand the wish that things were a bit different.

I assume the point was more if money from the Playing squad had been diverted to achieve that aim while still getting success on the pitch. As SD I don’t think anyone’s expecting him to oversee it in the literal sense, but he’d have to agree to sacrifice from the sporting side and work within a tight budget to allow the finance for it to happen. You can’t make a commitment like that at a club like ours without the full by in of the SD as they will have to deal with the knock on affect of the redistribution of finances.

surely as 'sporting director' this is not part of his remit, in the same way that upgrading the training facilities is? I think most of the time SW gets unfairly criticised by people who minimise his role by talking about him as if his only responsibility were player recruitment. But this seems an unusual example of someone overestimating his job description.

I tend to agree with this and I also don't think it is a very fair "competition" as has been suggested. No disrespect to the people involved meant.
  37. 1 point
Do I not? I was simply trying to make a point to bring sides together. I've tried 'smoothing' style posts over the years LYB. Always fail. Still keep trying though. If Labour get into power (as it seems they might) then it won't mean it's the end of things to criticise. Plus ça change. I'm sure there will be posts complaining about stuff. As a Green voter I will be left (like every single year since I was able to vote) without party that meets most of my values - that represents me. I might vote Labour because it would serve to unseat the incumbent Tory (I know it's our system and its failure) or more likely however, Green. Locally, the Greens do get in just not nationally. Seems to me that 'Green' is a better fit for our problems now than ever. I could never vote Tory though. Many very good local councillors though over the years that I worked alongside. At local level councillors often want to do good. That's where change can happen. As for rhetoric here isn't that the whole point? Folk can post what they wish. Free speech. If we don't like it then say nowt - or don't read - or just shrug your shoulders and say to yourself " there he goes again" etc etc. No point in vitriol. It isn't personal. It's frustration with stuff happening.
