Well, yes it is at risk. Private equity will asset strip, cut out everything which fails to make a profit, reduce the headcount, commercialise,  compromise quality, coarsen, and run the operation to a broadly right wing agenda based on right wing principles. All of this is inevitable and unavoidable. We will all be the poorer. Those who benefit will be counting their gains thousands of miles away from Norfolk, that's for sure.

The group still relies on print for 78% of its total revenues, although advertising, which makes made up the bulk of its income, fell by 10.8% to £64.2m and newspaper circulation fell by 6.6% to £16.4m in 2018.

That is not really sustainable nowadays.

Aye and if you can afford it, take out a small subscription on your favourites to help them out a bit. Turned off my ad blocker a long time ago. Saying that though, some papers could help themselves by making their websites a bit more user friendly. I'm looking in your direction Mirror and Independent.

The ads on here aren't intrusive so if people use an ad blocker its a poor show.

You would think this forum generates a regular amount of traffic where Archant may benefit from an online ad point of view.

I'd be happy to pay a pink un subscription - I'd really miss some of the Chinese and Vietnamese spam - but only if they relaxed the swear filter. It's phucking killing me.

Whichever way you look at it, it is very sad news. The risk of losing local titles many of which have been with us for over 100 years is a very great shame and a gap in the market. The trouble is many like me check the EDP24 on line rather than buying hard copy. I really only do the latter when i go to the game and get a goody bag for £1 and i will not be doing that any time quick. I feel sorry for the shareholders many will probably be local and quite a few staff. In these strange times advertising is going through the floor, and on that note i think the huge sums Sky and others pay into the PL and other sports is not sustainable. As for the Pink un its loss would be  the end of an era, no doubt something would replace it but not the same

Not sure there is a gap in the market any more. There simply isn't a market. People who buy newspapers are slowly dying off and are being replaced by a generation that gets its news in other ways. I'd be surprised if there are any newspapers left in 20 years time which is a huge shame

I’ve been thinking the same thing and I don’t really understand how they split the work. Seems Freezer and Southwell are both doing video reviews. None of them really write ‘features’ in the way Bailey does at the Athletic, it’s more about reporting what the club say and reposting articles reported in other publications.

Journalism is at risk. It’s been in its death throes for ages. Once everything went online it’s relied on clicks and therefore has moved over to insane sensationalism of absolutely everything to inspire clicks.

 

the future of journalism, along with so many other jobs (if you classify journalism as a job) is automation. Stories are already being written and quantified and pushed by artificial intelligence. The clock is ticking.

Using an ad blocker means news manufacturers don’t get money for click bait. It’s good for society that they aren’t rewarded.

There will always be a place for local newspapers, just not as many as there are now and on a smaller scale.  We're talking of more community papers with just local news rather than anything that resembles a national newspaper that tries to be all things to all people - and maybe only once a week instead of daily.

As for this forum, on it's own, it could be carried on with the minimum of expense, so a few adverts and a small subscription would be a small price to pay, the trouble is that at the moment, the ads are there to help finance the whole of the pinkun operation and staff etc.

Things and times do change, but things like this forum that are the lifeblood of the football community and do so much for good causes, should be valued by whoever is in charge and carried on as a priority.

Been in this situation and on these occasions "private equity" have taken as much as they can before putting the business in to admin. They will be there to make a fast buck and then leave the employees high and dry... It's what these people do... Online subscription has to be the way forward. Feel for Archant employees....

Well looks like I am on the naughty step in that I use both an ad-blocker and haven't bought the EEN or EDP in years. Sadly no real future for local print media as @ricardo sagely points out it doesn't work for the younger generation, online is more immediate, accessible and of course largely free. I refuse to be a commodity without control of how my data is used. That said I am sure the Pinkun can come up with a commercial model that works that I might be willing to subscribe to.

The EDP used to be  great newspaper when it was a broadsheet back in the 60s and 70s and widely bought throughout the county. Sadly,people no longer buy printed news and so the market is no longer there. 

At the same time classified advertising, the bread and butter of local newspapers, has moved to free online sites, so advertising income has dried up at the same time as sales revenue. 

It all points to the eventual, inevitable disappearance of newspapers.

I’m 32 and cannot remember ever buying a newspaper. This forum probably costs peanuts to run the problem if if Archant go under it might get swept away. Someone should get in touch with the Archant IT team and make sure there’s a contingency plan in place.

 When i spoke about a market i was thinking more of local news rather than hard copy although you are right the days of hard copy papers are nearing the end albeit the demise of records and books was premature
