Playing 'our way' is admirable....but sometimes making provisions for the opposition is a necessity....and this is one opponent where it absolutely is.

If its 'parking the bus' then so be it but Farke needs to pick a team most likely to stem the opposition. If we dont, we'll be sliced open for 90 mins...and it wont be pretty

Disagree. Same formation, same style, possibly different personnel. It doesn't matter if we park the bus or not, we'll almost certainly lose. Let's go down swinging having a go at them.

What kind of message does that send out to our players? Not to mention our fans? This is possibly the worst line up I’ve ever seen on here - Man City would win that 14-0.

We’ve got a bit of an injury crisis going on at the back, and right now our team needs a bit of luck with scans, support and a bit of unity from the fans. Easy when we’re doing well, but real support comes when it’s not been a good day at the office.

It won’t be an off day for us. We will play our normal swashbuckling way, which is a great way, a way that makes me and I think many other City supporters proud. Man City aren’t quite as physical as West Ham and play more openly. I’m sure they’ll win but we’ll give them a game and some hairy moments, rather than just setting up for anti football target practice thank you very much.

I would go, without the benefit of knowing the extent of our injuries yet -

Krul

Aarons, Zimbo, Godfrey, Lewis

Amadou, Vrancic

Buendia, Leitner, Cantwell

Pukki

Subs - Fahrmann, Heise, Byram, McLean, Trybull, Stiepermann, Drmic

I'd go with that except Vrancic number 10 and McLean next to Amadou instead of Leitner.

Leitner is pointless in a game where you are not expected to dominate possession and does not offer a goal threat. I love him but he doesnt always make sense... And this game is one of those times.

That would equally work for me, though I think a Vrancic and Leitner have that little bit more quality than a Vrancic and McLean. Leitner isn’t a prolific goal scoring number 10, granted, he pops up with odd one, and for a player of his quality he should perhaps score more, but I still think he’s far more effective when played further forward. But that said, I like Vrancic in that position too. I’d drop Stiepermann, not because I don’t like him, far from it, but things need freshening up a little and everyone needs to fight for their spot. We can only give ourselves the best possible chance by playing our best possible players, and at the moment, I would say that is probably as strong a line up as we could possibly put out.

Are we bringing back Hughton as well?

Playing a back five with three anchormen is not the way forward. We'd lose three or four nil anyway as they have the quality to get through no matter what we do, and we'd be lucky to have two shots in the entire match.

I'd play the regular formation, but just tell Aarons and Lewis to hold their position a bit more and try to use the match to learn how to be more defensively sound in this system, as they'll face wave after wave of world class attacks. Leitner and Stiepermann (or whoever plays in these roles) should also sit deeper to give the defence more protection. Buendia and Cantwell track back well anyway, but then we need to use them as outlets on the counter.

We'll probably lose no matter what we do. So I'd be tempted to use this match to practise our defensive shape against better teams and if we can nick something, great.

Alternatively, we could always go for it, have some fun and lose 6-2.

It's interesting as at the start of the season I have thought a 3-5-2 could have worked, with maybe a line up like the below as a plan b

Krul

Zimbo, klose, Godfrey

Aarons, Buendia, Amadou, Vrancic, Lewis

Drmic, Pukki

We still have the wide full backs but maybe more defensive strength and with so many midfielders such as Trybull, McLean and leitner all able to slide in to the formation.

But of course this was really only in extreme circumstances.

With the international break it does allow a bit of recentering and focusing on what has been good so far and where we have already improved. But of course it also allows time to reassess strategies and personnel's assignments.

For me I think against man city we need our technical players to use the ball very well when further up the pitch but we also need to keep to assignments and strategies.

For me -

Krul

Aarons, Zimbo, Godfrey, Lewis

Buendia, Trybull, Amadou, Leitner, Cantwell

Pukki

Yes, tough on Marco but we need more personnel deeper than his normal position to disrupt, track runs and close down gaps that will appear if we go forward.

Buendia and Cantwell will then need to really excel in their technical ability in using the ball at the highest level to give us opportunities.

Either way it will be another great test but hopefully the break has come at the right time, reassess, get injury reports and begin with a new energy.

One thing that seems to be clear is that Emi hasn’t quite found his feet, but hopefully it’ll come.

Yeh I hope so too. Quite a challenge for Farke to manage Emi, my perception is that he's not the sort of player that will respond well to being dropped, you would hope for a positive reaction but it doesnt always work that way. But if Farke has aspirations to be a top manager he is going to have to be able to get the best out of players like him. I'm sure he will.

That’s exactly how I see it with Buendia, I think Farke’s trying to get him through the storm as he knows his quality and probably feels he’s going to find his feet sooner rather than later, and when he does then I’m sure 100% confidence will be restored.

May as well keep playing the same way. I believe it will see us pick up the necessary points against teams around us. We dont want to muddy the waters with the players I.e Alex Neil after  Newcastle.

I would imagine Buendia and Leitner will have a bit of a gob on if they are dropped but that mustn't stop Farke from doing that if he thinks it the right thing to do.

I wouldn't want us to be overly defensive but a 5 or 6 nil drubbing would not help going into the Burnley game where we really must get at least a point.

A part of me is wondering would it be best to take the younger players out of the firing line for this one? Ignoring any blind optimism for this, in reality we’re likely to take an absolute pasting here. I’m a bit concerned what a demoralising defeat may do to the confidence of players like Cantwell, Emi and Aaron’s

Agree about Emi and Max, not because of a possible pasting but their performance levels are well down compared to last season, accepting of course they are in a far harder league. I'd have Cantwell in Buendia's role just as he was at the end of last season and did well.

If I was a player, just the thought of facing the current Man Citeh team would muddy my waters.

--------------Krul

Aarons Amadou (Or Zimbo if fit) Godfrey Lewis

    Tettey (Or Amadou) Vrancic

  Buendia Drmic Cantwell

            Pukki

Back 5 picks themselves but a lot depends on if Zimmermann is fit. We need a specialist DM in there either Tettey or Amadou and Vrancic because of his long range of passing to get us out of trouble when were penned in, also his free kicks might be useful. Drmic in for Stiepermann as we'll need to take one of the few chances we get and Stiepermann's shooting has been horrific so far this season, I see him as vital to how we play so I'm hoping Drmic can offer something similar.

Approach this like we did Leeds away last year. Focus on pressing and hitting them fast on the turnover, be clever with tactical fouls and keep the full backs just a little bit more suppressed than usual. We'll probably lose, but if we give them a good game and score a couple we'll head into Burnley full of confidence

Would certainly like to see Roberts & Buendia start, with Cantwell in a central position. Steipi has offered very little so far this season and apart from giving us some much needed height & the occasional hold play, has done nothing to warrant holding down his position.

Hopefully a return of one of the injury struggling CB's would then move Amadou in midfield to give us more grit and mobility in front of the back four.
