Branston Pickle 4,150 Posted September 29 If that’s ‘yards’ then the ‘6 yard box’ at Derby must be about 20yards as the edge isn’t even in view! It’s a matter of inches and with Sarge in the way of the lino’s view it isn’t that surprising it was missed - he’d have been guessing.
Carrow89 186 Posted September 29 So if supposedly people don't know what a yard is, how would they understand that metaphor ?

I bet I can ask two questions of most football fans: Have you ever heard of a ball being “yards out” or “yards away”? And Can you tell me what a yard is in cm? I’m willing to bet I’ll get largely affirmative answers for the first and not many correct for the second.

Considering the lines should be the same width as the posts/crossbar (generally around 10-12 cm) and also that the edge of ball overhanging the line is still in play, that ball is out by six inches (15 cm) at the VERY most. As for the second question, I'd guess a yard to be around 95 cm.

Yards away I’m afraid 😂 I wonder would there be uproar if he said it was “miles out” as we are only allowed to refer to literal miles now? hogesar 10,770 Posted September 29 I think we can all accept it was well out. But I also think it was a penalty before that. I mean, there's absolutely no chance that assistant would have seen it to be able to give it mind.

It wasn’t just them getting poor decisions.

Ken Hairy 4,272 Posted September 29 VAR gives a pen anyway and disallows Derby's 2nd, so the ram shaggers need to pipe down and accept the vastly better side won.

I know a yard is three feet and a metre is three feet, 3 inches (give or take), I also know that an inch is 2.5 centimetres (give or take). It would take me a while to do the maths as I do not always carry a tape measure to the footy and my phone is one of those rare ones that is not connected to the internet. It would depend when during the game I am asked the question if I am asked at half time or during a lull in play I would be able to answer eventually..............

I work in construction, so can say with some confidence (no googling) that a yard is 914.8mm. I don't think it's a metaphor, more of an exaggeration. 36 × 2.54 = 91.44 cm = 1 yard. , so if it was say 15 cm over it was approx 1/6 of a yard. Therefore if it was yards , it must be at least 2 yards so an exaggeration of approx ×12.

Petriix 3,220 Posted September 29 25 minutes ago, Pyro Pete said: Clearly handball, more like. Yep. Penalty and a red card. The officials actually did them a favour. Apparently "they never give those in the Championship" but they sometimes miss the ball being 4 inches over the line too. It's more than evened itself out within a couple of seconds. It gives us the phrase "lá meala" which when literally translated means a "honey day" or a sweet day which Borja Sainz certainly had yesterday! I believe it is found in English in words like melody and mellifluous. (For the wordsmiths on here!)
