JonnyJonnyRowe 974 Posted June 11 Danny Mills is doing an AMA on Reddit, and I noticed this question and reply.. He doesn't deny the 'beef', but its a bit weird isn't it? Had a problem with Mike Walker by the sounds of it, why would you hold onto that for 25+ years, and what has that got to do with the fans?

The Raptor 1,573 Posted June 11 (edited) I don't think there's much to see here. He had a **** job 25 years ago which he's largely forgotten about. Seems as much about 'little old norwich' fans with a chip on their shoulder annoyed he did better elsewhere. Not relevant to this but his kids a brilliant runner as well! Edited June 11 by The Raptor

All the Germans 1,239 Posted June 11 Bit of a pr*ck, but also bang average; he must have been pinching himself how he ever managed to get in that 2002 England World Cup team. Seaman, Ferdinand, Campbell, Cole, Beckham, Scholes, Owen, Heskey etc.

KeiranShikari 1,524 Posted June 11 So he got booed by fans after by fans that wouldn't have known the ins and outs of his situation. Yeah, I think he's just a petty bloke.
chicken 3,087 Posted June 12 It's odd that for a player of such experience, that he doesn't recognise it's fairly typical for football fans to boo former players unless they earned the respect of that not happening. I can think of plenty of players like that over the years, both in our team boo'd by other fans and the other way around. I heard there was some stuff behind the scenes too. In anycase, I get the 'having to move from your home town at 19'. I did at 18, and on far less money. There are lads aged 16 being released from accademies and we are signing them up. Even back then it wasn't unusual.

Surely it should be the other way round? Players should always receive a good reception for serving the club unless they've done something to warrant not getting one. I get the impression that when I was young, it did seem to be that players were automatically applauded when returning to former clubs, but nowadays it seems the default stance is to boo, especially if the player moved to a bigger club, which just seems bonkers to me. I can understand it if the player behaved badly, but it seems to happen even when the player did little/nothing wrong. Again, this is not talking about Mills or even Norwich City specifically, but football in general.

How you leave a club and behave often determines how the fans treat you

nu_matik 184 Posted June 12 He's always been a ****. My late father was a respected athlete, coach and writer. He met Danny Mills at Sportlink once and tried to talk to him about running and shoes and my old man said he was the most arrogant and self-important 'Athlete' he'd ever come across.
GodlyOtsemobor 2,830 Posted June 12 Oh how awful, professional footballer has to move away from home at 19 to earn a fortune. Few decades before hand 15 and 16 year olds left home to go and die fighting a war.... Yep, you truly were a victim Danny boi and should seek counselling for your very traumatic experience.

The one I really can't get my head round is Grealish. He's a local lad, a Villa fan, and could have left for about six successive summers before he actually did. Most players would've jumped ship during Villa's three-year spell in the Championship. But no, Grealish stayed, led them to promotion, kept them up for two seasons, becoming a top class player in the process. At that point, he was 26, he could get his club £100m, and realistically had to leave to compete for major trophies. Yet the Villa fans boo him for some reason? The ungrateful bar stewards should be building the bloke a bloody statue.
Europe_93 50 Posted June 12 I think today more games are on TV, and younger fans watch more of the big games. If you take someone like Raheem Sterling who left Liverpool -he got portrayed as a money grabbing ****, whereas he also moved cos he wanted to win trophies. Clubs have held too much power of too long, they treat (especially thinking young & academy) players as products and have a super tough business lens, would be ready to discard them at a whim of a coach - but when players have that super tough business or career lens (Mbappe / Sterling) the clubs portray the players poorly. Clubs and fans want loyalty, when it suits and but away from the big names are absolutely ruthless. Going back to the younger fans, I think they don't really stop to consider the perspectives of human beings (I mean how much **** is written on social media when teams win / lose games) they just react based on behaviours they have seen played out in the mainstream media. As for Danny Mills, he was a great player - and f**king lunatic.
