A free kick that you never tire of seeing

What's the best free kick by a City player? And when have we last had a true expert?

I often recall that Lappin FK (v Luton I think?).

Dowell's against Forest was probably the "last" good one? Strangely whenever he was on the pitch we never seemed to get many free kicks in a scorable position so he was unable to repeat it!

From now on, Nunez if he is on the pitch seems to be the go to player, but he misses far more than he scores mainly because he seems to try too hard!

I clicked on this expecting to see Vrancic v Sheffield Weds.

You have bitterly disappointed me.

Haha...to be fair that is a good call. Perhaps he scored the most vital and most dramatic FK in the recent past. Or, maybe ever?

That Carlos hit though!

Yep, that's what I was also expecting !  Hope this link works

Oh yes, it ****ing worked.

I was enjoying it until the very end when the commentator said, "Norwich never, ever know when they're beaten and that it what's been so impressive about this team this season, they never give up, they never panic and when they need that moment of magic, they've got players than can provide it". How did we get from there to here?!

Farke just sitting in the dugout as well not celebrating. Legend.

Spent hours at the park trying to replicate it.

I'm clearly bored am I not? Posting free kicks from Twitter.

#nonewsmonday

That Lappin one here (his first ever goal for us):

And though not a free kick this Safri one was probably further out than Roberto Carlos.

(Have I atoned enough for you now CanaryDan23? 😊)

Vrancic against Wednesday. No contest.

You're not old enough to remember Graham Paddon. He was one of the few players who could make a 1970's ball move in the air.

He hit one from 30 yards against Joe Corrigan that swerved dramatically at the last second leaving Corrigan rooted to the spot. I was standing in the perfect place to see it in the middle of the Barclay.

Pukki deserves an assist for the Vrancic one for getting fouled in exactly the right place 😂

Er no - your memory is playing tricks on you - it was Vrancic who was ahem..... fouled. Even better Vrancic then moved the ball backwards by a yard or two when the refs back was turned to give him more space to get it up and over the wall. 🙂

I’m not too old ! And I agree . GP was one of my earliest hero’s. There is some you tube footage of Paddon hitting a shot (not a free kick) which leaves the keeper rooted. West Ham I think.

I love the guy beside the goal (assume a photographer) who ducks. (It’s hard to see on this clip - just under the Mastercard symbol)

I think Carlos took every free kick after this on the back of that free kick. Not sure he ever scored again!

I don't recall Norwich ever really having a dead ball specialist worth getting excited about if we got a free kick within 30 yards of goal - the occasional stonker with Vrancic, Lappin, even Maddison... I am of the age though of remembering the excellent Crook/Bowen combination down the left

This also happened at Le Tournoi:

Can guarantee if var checked that it would be a penalty.

I think Vrancic is the most consistent dead ball specialist I can remember us ever having, whenever we got a free kick within range, you knew we were in with a chance.  Ian Crook was brilliant in open play but for some reason that never translated into expertise at free kicks.

I agree overall...it's odd we've never had a real specialist and given that Webber (especially) has always talked about the smallest details and fine margins in winning matches (and I'm sure the little things do matter), it's a conundrum why it hasn't been more of a focus these last few years. I get that we ought to do better from set pieces  and most games have an opportunity. We just don't ever seem to have a weapon.

Southampton did really well from Ward-Prowse as a great example (not so well last year obviously).

Vrancic was a good example. Even Crook was good with delivery but I can't say he was lethal in that regard.

This season gone I felt we had found one when I went to Hull and that excellent Nunez goal. Talking of him too, I thought he looked terrific as a Robins type striker when played further up - but it was just the once really and not repeated. So next season I want to see if Nunez is used there again and also can take a good free kick.

Snodgrass delivered a number of crackers over his time with us, I thought.

Martin O'Neill 90th minute winner at Portman Road Boxing day 1982. I was in the Churchmans right behind it. A moment of epic self control!
