Todays substitutions..

Recommended Posts

The moment we stick Barnes up top on his own we're playing with 10 men, happens every bloody time.

This is why fans don't take to Wagner.

There was nothing particularly wrong in either of those subs - but it’s horribly telling that SVH hasn’t been brought on recently.

Or Aboh given that fact

I can only assume we didn’t have the budget or pull for that type of player, Idah must have wanted the move and VH was possibly the only option? I don’t know just making assumptions! But even the Binners bought in two decent strikers in January!

i think a pacey fit striker from lower league who maybe does not score that many but works his socks off just to keep the CB's busy later in the game would have been better than SVH

There is everything wrong in playing barnes as a lone striker,  he can't hold the ball up, he can't chase or run the ball down the lines to get us cheap throws. It is like going down to 10 men.

Bare bones? We were missing 4 players, two of whom are defenders tonight.

Yeah, but no but. Hanley, Rowe, Gianoullis, Onel and Sorenson for definite.

Duffy for all practical intents and purposes and when Gibbs was injured almost immediately he came on we were missing 6 (or 7 if you include Duffy).

Duffy and Hanley are the two best headers of a ball at the club - no surprise at all at how we conceded the two goals.

Exactly so the CB's have more time and push up , need energy to worry defenders so they are always thinking nick ball of us or close us down ,hassle them into mistakes

Gibbs getting an injury after about 10 seconds was unlucky though. He would have brought running and energy.

This was the problem and really unlucky. Hope it’s not serious. Without anyone to do the running up top to create space for our midfield the system collapses.
Some of our football was sublime and in the scheme of things we are a point nearer and a game less to the target.

It really shows how much of a failure the January window was. Idah would have replaced Sargent and offered a decent outlet. Instead his replacement is sat on his **** on the bench and doesn’t even look capable

How do we know.Hardly been seen.

This, i agree some of Wagners subs and tatics are baffling, but the lack of squad depth is now telling, he's doing his best with what's available, and who knows what was said to him when Knapper arrived, as for tonight can't blame him for players not scoring.

He’s not doing his best with what’s available though. I agree he has limited options, but he’s not willing to experiment with the breadth of them. It’s the same Plan B and it often doesn’t work

SVH has been here for NINE WEEKS....if we havent been able to coach him / get him up to speed to be able to contribute in a sitaution like that tonight, after Sargent went off, he can't have an ounce of raw material to work with.

Someone at the club should be losing their job over this

That’s not specifically connected to those substitutions though.  We’d not have seen this thread had our defence done its job against two bog-standard corners.

We invited pressure onto ourselves via the tactical changes. It could be argued we wouldn’t have seen the corners were it not for that. But yes, we should be defending them better

This doesn’t have anything to do with substitutions  . Dreadful defending . Reminds me of Sunday morning football. Two jumpers on the back post being watched by four defenders on the ground. image.png.64cf3f885d4d8c418acf90c0081ddc95.png

Trouble is it invites pressure on to our defence.  We all know our defence isn't very good under pressure, and leave players unmarked in the area. We defended from the front against Ipswich, so they couldn't build up pressure.

But that's why we shouldn't sit back with a lone striker who is not any good at it. Everyone should know by now we can't defend in the box , we have conceded goals like that all season,  we are always getting caught at the back post.

It's a huge concern that Wagner seems to have faith in about 14 players in the entire squad.

Interesting line from Connor's post-match- admittedly I'd only just clicked on so not sure on context, but he was saying how Wagner didn't want Forshaw or Placheta to leave and those were very much Knapper decisions.

Certainly, it seems to be implied that Wagner doesn't trust the youth brigade or SvH enough at the moment, but I think it's a bit of a reach to be suggesting that Placheta would have been a genuine option instead. Much less Adam Forshaw who was only matchday fit every 20 games.

I can't believe they're all of such poor calibre that there's no point even trying them.

The substitutions don’t affect not defending two identical in swinging corners . Maybe we have seen why Bathh hasn’t been playing ?

Sargent playing half of his game with his back to goal is going to get knackered. Looked like a 60 min sub.

Sainz was taking time out of the game .

Feel for Gibbs - he looked devastated.

This is true. However they do effect the number of corners and other platforms (such as long throws) a Wednesday were able to win.

Look at the Wednesday subs. Wasn't it 4 at HT and it worked wonders for them... maybe wagner will be that ballsy  doubt it tho

Easy to make 4 subs at half time when you are getting pushed all over the place and barely laying a glove.

i know Sarge is Higher workrate  compared to barnes and had his injury this season ,

he must be fit by now so his injury still must be troubling him

Barnes who is nearly twice his age is kept on and plays more mins

If you watch the replay you can see we have eight or nine players in our own six yard box all getting in each others way and none of them marking anyone. Shambolic.

what i can not understand he is polar opposite from Sarge ,

Why we did not sign someone who has a bit of pace with Energy someone who maybe not as be as good as Sarge but same style ,

plays the same way as Sarge so we could like for like replacement even without sarges goals would have been better than someone not playing

We do have options, the problem is a manager who refuses to trust in them. He did it with Baath earlier in the season- couldn’t buy a start despite having proved himself player of the season for his club in the same division only last year. Now it is Sydney’s turn to be totally insulted by being left on the bench when Gibbs - a defensive midfielder- is chosen to start ahead of him up front. He must be wondering why he bothered coming here- and so should we. Then we have frozen out youth who might have broken through like Aboh. Is the squad thin - certainly- but not as thin as it is being made by a manager who pretends lots of them don’t even exist

NB: apologies - I replied to wrong post! I wanted to reply to one saying we had thin squad.

I have sympathy with the Manager due to the injuries, to key players all season. A previous list does not include Onel. But you have to question the Idah & SVH. deals. Rumours say Idah wanted to leave. And SVH should be knocking on The Managers door this morning. Could we have got somebody else in ?  Placheta being released without replacing, again questionable. Unless there was somebody in our U21's showing enough talent. BUT - Yet to be seen.

Are we good enough to go up ? Before Christmas, many were saying that this was one of the weakest NCFC Squads. Aren't we punching above our weight ?

How was it anything to do with bringing subs on? Defence is poor. Can't defend our own box. We missed a fair few chances to go 5 up. The players are letting us and the management team down.

You answered your own question, why bring on more defensive players who will make the team sit deeper and invite pressure,  when we all know the defence is very average.

No matter how well Wagner does, it’s hard to defend continued decisions like this. It just makes you think how much better could we be?

Was a joke last night we desperately needed fresh legs and he did a big fat zero when it really mattered.  Why the hell isn’t The Dutch lad getting mins . Surely he could have held ball up ??  He clearly trusts no one on bench so what’s the point in having them there??? We weaker now than in Jan we might as well have kept the guy from forest !! At then he brings Duffy on ten mins too late after horse has bolted . Never seen a game where we were coasting so well and we totally threw it away . Felt like a defeat walking out and all was so avoidable .

Wagner and his tombola substitutions and tactics last night reminded me that every few games he shows why he is not the man to take the club forward.
