Just watched the highlights from yesterday. Hanley doing what Hanley does. All three goals,no reaction. Never been any different. No vocals,no fist clenching,no encouragement. Must be the worst captain we have ever had.Awful.

And yet the players say otherwise...

This looks like the second Hanley bashing thread on the first page of this forum so i officially declare Grant Hanley as scapegoat for 2024/25.

That doesn’t make him play any better, evidentially.

I want to see players having a go at each other. Demanding standards on the field. We haven't had that apart from perhaps Barnes a bit last season. McLean is not a leader. We need leaders. Hanley just turns and walks away from the goal. I'm not talking extremes like Bowyer and Dyer fighting each other at Newcastle that time. But standards on the pitch need to be driven by the senior players.

Most of this squad need to go. Webber left us with a real job to do so its no wonder Knapper, Thorup and co have all been stressing it will take time as they basically need to rebuild the entire squad.

We should judge Hanley when he has played against Championship level strikers, whilst playing for us. There's no question the Belgian clubs and St Pauli were far superior than what we will face most weeks.

He did well for Scotland in the Euros but that was part of 3 CBs and McGin, McTominay and Gilmour in front and 2 good fullbacks including Robertson providing additional protection. We are **** in comparison, but the Championship is pretty poor quality, hence Ipswich getting promotion.

He might still be a vital player for us, especially as Thorup hasn't really come up with a better alternative, although credit to Hills who grasped pre season better than most.

Sounds like Hills is going out on loan, listening to Thorup.

I agree,  yes I am criticising Handley for negative play, and was amazed Stacey didn't shout at him to give the EASY ball wide to him. He and Rowe might as well joined us in the South Stand for the amount of ball they were given. Yes, Handley needs a rest.

Hills has been good,  so why didn't he start?

Absolute joke decision if true, the kids looked great in pre season.

I've long said the biggest issue with the squads over the past couple of seasons is the lack of leaders, Hanley as captain epitomises that.

He's just a reserved character. The other side of the coin is a player like Duffy who will punch the turf and go nuts if we concede.

Both can be effective, but I will agree in part that in recent years we have had too many strong, silent types. Sometimes, you do need someone to front up and say something isn't good enough.

Hanley FWIW I think is very well liked as captain and I believe it will remain that way.

Given Hills looked far superior to any of the other youngsters, that suggests we are going with Hanley. Duffy, Cordoba, with Sorensen, Doyle and McLean as backup.

One of them is already injured and the other not even here yet. Interesting.

Cannot see any sense in that whatsoever. I’d be picking him ahead of Duffy and Hanley based on pre season showing

If this is true then it makes a total mockery of the massively hyped 'strategy' of giving our own youngsters a clear pathway and opportunities to progress to the first team.

The four centre backs all went out on loan at various stages last season. Hanley and the old duffer will get savagely exposed for lack of pace this season. Currently it seems all the old plodders will be wheeled out again. We may as well shut down half of Colney and sell it for Rayner's building programme. No point in our much hyped 'Academy'. Looks like Knapper and his mate might well be exposed as full of hot air just feeding the natives with what they want to hear whilst having zero intention of actually carrying any of it out.

He was mine 4 seasons ago. I'm glad I'm still ahead of the field. 😉

Very poor if so. Let him learn by playing for us this year. We're not getting promoted anyway with the old guard, time to give him experience here for the future.

It really would be crazy and an admission that Thorup doesn’t want to upset the older players amongst the squad. I was hoping we’d see the likes of Cordoba, Doyle (if he signs) and Hills ensuring that Hanley and Duffy were nothing but injury fall-back.

It’s almost like some people think they might not get a chance to have a go at their favourite scapegoats once the season starts and players start playing games that matter, so they’re getting their moaning in early.

So much upset over things that might happen.

Really?  You do surprise me given how you slate both at every opportunity….

Maybe, just maybe, the manager and his coaches know a tad more about things than supporters - particularly when you consider Hoff’s (and Knapper’s) m.o.   Fact is, Hills is unlikely to be an out and out starter unless we get injuries.  He’s a great prospect, but it could be better for him to go on loan to L1 for a few months (bearing in mind he’s only played at L2).

100% agree. I can’t see us getting promoted this season and so that we should use it as an opportunity to develop some of our young players ready to replace our seniors when they depart

You can justify it all you like, but players like Hanley and Duffy are only taking this club backwards. You keep supporting that all you like, but I don’t

I think some calm is needed at a time when the boat is rocking.

Duffy was a big player for us last year, there seems to be a willingness to deny that. Hanley, if his injury hasn't slowed him down too much, is still more than capable of a squad place. Cordoba has been signed to be the star of the back line.

Although it isn't very fun to hear, the odds sit heavily with Duffy having a better season at Championship level than Hills, right now, if dropped into identical seasons. The latter has looked great thundering into challenges and hunting the ball, but this is pre season; one must tempter the good as much as the bad. A loan has been mentioned because, again a harsh truth, if he is fourth choice, would he be better getting whole games somewhere else than 30 mins here and a Carabao game there?

Defensively last year we were around 12th on goals conceded or similar. Not exactly catastrophic and that was with Duffy and Gibson. Of those two Gibson was far worse and prone to mistakes leading to goals. Hankers injury was a blow, despite neither being what I’d like to see they’re not terrible defenders, they’re just in need of an upgrade in the next season or two.

I thought Thorup’s strength is developing young players so why send Hills out on loan for a Season which is being seen as a building one for us.
