Recommended Posts

Is this Wagner saying to Knapper and the board hey it’s the transfer window and I’d like some new players.

why not put a young player gets experience of a 1st team game even if he does not come on

He did. Caleb Ansen.

We went through this with the Bristol Rovers replay, and apparently we only had two keepers on the bench because an outfield sub was injured in the warmup? It does seem a bit weird that it's happened again. If you want to give Ansen the experience, why not give Aboh or similar a bench slot ahead of Gunn? We don't need three goalkeepers in the matchday squad!

Wagner was asked about this by Chris Goreham.  Plan was to play Duffy, but he injured his back.  Ansen was with the squad, so was put on the bench.

Goalkeeper is a specialist position and I doubt McLean or Sorensen could cover adequately in an emergency.

So our one of two main keepers (Gunn and Long) could be injured in the warm-up fielding shots from our forwards, for example, so a third keeper is added for insurance (Reyes or Ansen). most recently

Oh, I understand. However, put Aboh on the bench and he’s never getting on the pitch ahead of Idah and he’s played yesterday. So while Ansen would never get in ahead of Gunn, an 18 year old HAS been given that matchday experience and while I get we’re desperate for new hope and new heroes, the perceived pathway for Ansen is still important.
Neither were ever going to play a part, and with Aboh stalling perhaps that comes into consideration?

Yeah I get you. Aboh was just the first name that came into my head due to his form for the U23s and contract situation... it's more frustrating that you just don't need three goalkeepers on the bench, period. Choose either Gunn or Ansen, then give the other bench slot to an outfield sub, surely? But I appreciate it's not a massively important thing.

That was my point , a outfield player never have 2 keepers on the bench

It definitely seems sensible to travel with 3 keepers, incase of pre-game illness/injury. If an outfield player gets ill/injured and it’s all you have with you, you might as name whoever is there.  It makes sense, but does feel a little odd.

Yeah take 3 keepers with you, by all means. But it's clearly not coincidence, the same thing happened for the replay at Bristol Rovers! We've got an entire U21 squad full of players who would have killed for a spot on the bench today... Welch, Montoia, Lima, Aboh, Manning, Forsyth, Renecke, Ogwuru.

I'll let it go now because it's not massively important, just seems like an opportunity missed to give another youngster a taste of 'what they could hope to achieve'.

Here’s a crazy idea, if you know this exact same situation has happened before, maybe bring an extra outfield youngster?

yes maybe travel with 3 because of illness / injury but to have 3 on bench is not for me

The reason Wagner was looking so pissed off during the game was because the fourth official explained that he wasn't allowed to bring on another keeper without taking the first one off. He had hoped to play all three.

The U21 squad, who were playing a game less than 24 hours before ? So, then hang about Manchester so you can sit on the bench at Anfield the next day ? Gosh, that is going to help the player's development immensely. How many games did Rowe sit on the first team bench, and what part did it play in his development ? And why was Ansen not gaining this development experience ?

When would this lucky chappie be told he is to sit on the bench the day after the U21 game ? Before or after that U21 game ? When was it known that Duffy was being pulled out of the FA Cup squad ?

It was an ideal chance to put a couple of youngsters like Aboh or someone else on the bench so they get to feel what it’s like with the first team at least. It’s no wonder some of them get frustrated and want to leave

Wagner could name 8 goalies on the bench and some would put down their haribos and rise to their feet in applause.

He’d probably happily play at least one out field

If I was U21 I would have played the day before and gladly sat on the bench at the prospect of playing a few minutes at Anfield.

Everyone in that U21 would have done. It was a very odd situation.

Once again as series of posts from the permanently disgruntled proving that what Delia Smith said at the AGM was correct.

It could be when Aboh signs elsewhere (yesterday a final straw in his current thoughts), then starts banging them in week in week out for his new club and we all look on and refer back to this as the moment we lost a good prospect for years on here.

It could be that he has already told them he's not going to sign and they've decided that it would be a waste of time putting him in the 1st team squad.

Indeed, but that won't stop this message board filling up with threads referring back to this moment as a massive missed opportunity in years to come.
