Delia calling for fans' return

No worries buddy.

it was the bit about "you keep it that way and not trade things like football matches for our families"

I see now you meant Delia. I think that's a bit strong too but each to their own.

It's tough on us all. People don't always show it but we're all living under great strain. We daily have to make decisions that could effect ours and other folks lives. And old and vulnerable communities have already lost the contact they had with the outside world.

I try not to be too hasty to judge.

Perhaps Delia wouldn't be so blase about things if she had children and grandchildren who depended on her and her husband. In the real world its not feasible for most normal people to have children now if they don't have the support of their parents, particularly when it comes to childcare, both parents need to work.

There are a lot of people who are focused only on trying to ensure that they don't lose friends and relatives to this virus and couldn't give a f*ck about going to the football. I feel that Delia should perhaps have approached fan groups for their thoughts before becoming an activist on the issue, I suspect she'd have discovered that its a very divisive issues and possibly one she should stay out of.

Yes we had a trial with 1000 fans, yes it was successful, but that was when cases were running at 500 a day. We're now back up to several hundred deaths a day.

The timing of her intervention is very odd.

Best you take that up with Delia. I have my own family, friends and community to worry about.

Love Delia, would love to back in the ground but her rant is at best naive and at worst completely bloody stupid! Everybody calling for return of fans because they are outside just look at the daily statistics and even Germany are now backing off it. Talk ****e have been beating this drum for weeks, ignorant Durham at the forefront - everybody is now a medical expert. Does my nut in!!

The timing really is absolutely atrocious, we have hospitals in some parts of the country that are days away from having to turn people away. I would hope that the club's PR people haven't told her that this open letter was a good idea.

I reckon she must have a new book coming out and she’s not been in the public eye......her comments were way off the mark on that interview and as others timing pretty shoddy.

The sentiment was correct, better to have fans in the terrace than inside.

Oh right, well sounds very much to me like you are living firmly in a Tier 1 bubble and have no real idea how bad this thing can get for your family, friends and community.

I don't think there's any more risk in sitting socially distanced in a football stadium than walking through the city popping into shops. I think.there's less risk sitting socially distanced in a football stadium than going to the pub.

In Tier 3 pubs are closed if they don't double up as family restaurants, and in Tier 4 a lot of shops are too.

You'd be happy sitting a metre away from somebody who has just spent a week in Liverpool for work for your pre-match pint then? And then to the ground to sit a metre away from somebody who has just come back from Nottingham?

That sounds like a great way to bump Norwich up the tiers and for the N&N to fill up with people struggling to breathe.

Anybody who thinks fans at football is important right now is not right in the head or living in ignorant bliss, in much of the North they are running out of ICU beds and on the brink of needing to utilise the Nightingale's. Things didn't get that bad in April.

As I said, people are living under extreme pressures so I'm not too hasty to judge.

Surely inside te stadium isn't the problem?

I don't think there's any more risk in sitting socially distanced in a football stadium than walking through the city popping into shops. I think.there's less risk sitting socially distanced in a football stadium than going to the pub. Or in fact sitting in the TOTT watching on a screen.

But where I see a greater risk than all of those is thousands of people arriving and leaving the same place at the same time. Not just in and out of the stadium but also congregating in local areas. Pubs. And last but not least public transport.

Just for clarity these are the only views I've posted on here. As you people can clearly see I came to the conclusion that it would not be safe to allow thousands of fans back into stadiums.

But we can all gather in pubs for 11 hours a day? Or walk around the likes of Morrisons in close proximity to many people, who are wearing a mask but that’s actually completely irrelevant because nearly everyone picks up food items that they don’t purchase... and several others may do the same thing before that food item is finally bought.

It is absolutely ridiculous that, with ALL SAFETY MEASURES IN PLACE, football stadia, outdoors with plenty of space, cannot host a certain percentage of socially distanced supporters.

Lets break this down shall we....

In tier 3 and 4 pubs are closed, unless they double as family restaurants like Wetherspoons. If you think that a restaurant will let you hog a table for 11 hours you are living in another world, particularly somebody like Tim Martin who will want to be churning the tables over as quickly as possible, in fact their app currently asks you state how long you intend to sit on the table and 11 hours is not an option, I know that because I ate there yesterday. Most food pubs are putting time limits of 1.5 or 2 hours per table in their company policy.

Yes, people need food to survive, there isn't the capacity for everybody to order every food shop for home delivery. In some parts of the country they have 4 week waits again, and some people aren't computer literate. Eating isn't optional.

Its not ridiculous when you realise, as Nutty Nigel correctly pointed out, that these thousands of fans will be piling onto public transport (so they can have a few pints) to sit near people who have no choice but to use that public transport for essential activities like work (including NHS workers) or to access essential services like doctors/dentists/to buy food.

Remember that Delia isn't just advocating a return to football in Tier 1 areas, and limiting tickets to those who live in Tier 1 areas, she's advocating a return to football in places which are seeing hospitals fill up and hundreds dying too.

It would also encourage people to travel outside of their areas, and that could mean people bringing coronavirus from a town with a bigger problem into Norwich. I'd rather be sitting in a pub with people who all live in a Tier 1 area than suddenly have to mix with people from Tier 2 and 3 areas as well. It would be extremely hard to police this when distributing tickets, and remember that Tier 1 people may still be expected to travel to Tier 3 areas for work during the week and then be sitting near you having a pre-match pint on the Saturday (or indeed, on a Tuesday night, having been to a tier 3 area on the same day).

Fans at football is a bad idea at this moment in time, the alarming data alone shows that - do you study the data?

Fans at football when the cases dies down again, presumably when winter is over, is something more worthy of support. When case nationwide are below 1000 daily again like they were in the summer.... no problem, lets do it.

Delia's timing is atrocious, just makes it look like she's got her head buried firmly in the sand.

Dear Delia,

Remember Robbie Cowling, the Colchester United Chairman we had a run in with 11 years ago.

He expressed this opinion to the same addressee 5 weeks ago in a letter which avoided such excruciating knee bending.

Given our socialist principles if we wish to give somebody a free taster session at Carrow Road I can think of more deserving cases than Boris. Perhaps we can ask our local meat factories for a suitable candidate?

A thousand cases a day you say? Try USA with 90,000 yet we have (both indoor and outdoor) stadiums open at 25% capacity in several States. Whether you agree with that or not, there has been no data that shows any outbreaks related to that activity, whereas there is from (outdoor) political rallies - one major difference: distance. No distance at all at the rallies and six ft at sports stadia.

I mean her no disrespect as I love her to bits normally, but I live up North. Up here her comments have been added to with the old ‘ Let’s be Avenue ‘.

People around me already feel that up here in the North we are taking measures to protect the South, like I said I don’t object to her comments as such if she had said it 6 weeks ago fair play, it is just Ill advised at this time.

We have 100,000 cases a day in the U.K. if the ONS figures are correct.

Why are Delia and the club releasing these statements? It's embarrassing at a time when the virus is on a massive increase again and when there are a lot more important things to worry about than football clubs. Yes some clubs lower down the chain might go bust, but that's no different to all the other thousands of businesses that have had to close down throughout this saga. Football is not a special case and these statements just make the club look completely foolish and out of touch.

The first statement was embarrassing but what is embarrassing about supporting an industry - any industry - that doesn't appear to occupy the same privileged position in government eyes as universities or meat processing factories?

It's all a nonsense.

If the flu is going to kill us all, not seeing your family and friends, plus shutting down pubs, swimming pools, sports grounds and cinemas isn't going to stop it. Apparently the government has tried this and cases of flu are still rising.

What to do what to do.

We are heading into a national lockdown next week, all but certain.

The whole debate about fans and drunken Delia wading in, is irrelevant and over.

Is it not? The symptoms sound a lot like bird flu and swine flu.

A skeptic might say that news agencies have been priming the populous for the current pandemic for a while.

Why indeed? Are NCFC in financial trouble themselves? Extraordinary that Delia Smith and the club make stupid statements when pandemic figures are worsening daily!

And for those who do not think Covid-19 is a flu virus - it is! But a far more serious one than type A, Bird and Asian flu! Yes the latter caused deaths, but not on the scale of Covid, which attacks the vital organs of the body.

FFS - stop spreading lies.

flu and COVID are NOT caused by the same type of virus.
