mannings bandy legs 439 Posted March 8, 2022 Dean Smith has said that after playing at Anfield on the Wednesday,he was feeling TIRED so was'nt able to be considered for the Brentford game.I really do wonder what the modern footballer is made of. Best pitches, best diet, best recovery set up. Could'nt make it up!

keelansgrandad 6,680 Posted March 8, 2022 I think I mentioned it cynically on another post. How can he be tired? He doesn't play. So lets have it. If you play too much you are tired. If you don't play you are equally tired. From what I remember, a lot of the players were tired during Mike Walker's second tenure. But for other reasons.
Faded Jaded Semi Plastic SOB 1,223 Posted March 8, 2022 Many moons ago my uncle was so keen to play his Wednesday league game that he swapped shifts to enable him to play, this entailed him getting up very early to be able to shovel coal on a steam train between Kings Cross and Doncaster, arriving at 06:00, quick breakfast, and shovelling more coal on a steam train from Doncaster back to Kings Cross, on arrival a quick jog across the platform to be picked up by the team coach an off to play a game of football........... Slate them for being princesses in absolute maximum peak condition, requiring the best pithes, diet, recovery etc. as you say. But then go mental at them when they don't play at 100% peak level week in week out. The tiredness will be to do with match fitness, most likely. That's why he probably wasn;t at his best. Our manager then offers a reason, NOT an excuse, a reason. And predictably what is your reaction? Sl@g the lad off for being a footballer conditioned to a certain standard. Both footballers AND expectations have changed in tandem, try looking at your own expectations first.

An olden day Steve Ovett. Arrogant when winning but not one to pretend he was an "elite". Not a sulker like "that damn fine chap Coe, what what". I saw Dorothy Hyman interviewed and she said the establishment at AAAs didn't like her because she was a Northener. Geordies are fine now of course. Capt. Pants 5,008 Posted March 9, 2022 Smith now saying Rupp also wasn't available for the Brentford game due to fatigue. I guess I'm a bit surprised a professional athlete hasn't flushed their legs out more than 48 hours after their last match, so it suggests their absence was more precautionary than anything else given previous injuries. TheGunnShow 7,377 Posted March 9, 2022 5 minutes ago, Faded Jaded Semi Plastic SOB said: Not sure what the point here is, haven't thee been instances of people running seven marathons in seven days?........ Won't have raced them, that's for sure. There's a very big difference between a leisurely jog round and a full-paced effort. If I run my half-mara PB in just under an hour and forty-five, there's no speed being thrown out for a few days afterwards. Do it as a jog in two-and-a-quarter and there's no pain the next day. Short and simple, the body needs time to recover after intensive activity. Sure, the fitter you are, the less time you need to recover as a rule, but the more you push when tired, the more likely you are to either not be as fresh/sprightly as you were earlier on, or worse still, the greater the risk of injury due to overuse/overload. The general rule of thumb when racing is "a mile per day". By that, we mean if you've raced full effort, you'll need a day to shake a mile out of your legs fully. Granted, in football you've always got little breaks in play so it's not constant effort, but you are spending considerable periods at very high levels of intensity, and recovery is particularly important so as not to overload. I can definitely understand an attacking full-back, who usually has more ground to cover than anyone else, feeling fatigued after an intense game.
canarybubbles 2,199 Posted March 9, 2022 Was this reported second-hand or did Smith say it directly in a press conference? Either way, how do we know what Giannoulis said or how he said it? 'I'm a bit tired' is very different from 'I'm so tired I'm not sure I can make the next game'. This sounds like mischief-making to me.
Red_Spartan 19 Posted March 9, 2022 Both of these players have been out of the game with covid previously too. I would echo the TGS point re recovery.
TheGunnShow 7,377 Posted March 9, 2022 Just realised - I have a good practical example from when I did an event called the Läufer-König (running King) which was part of the myriad events making up the Spreewald Marathon back in 2015. They have an event called the Biosphere Run, starting and finishing in the very picturesque small town of Lübbenau. It's just over a half-marathon in distance, closer to 14 miles than 13, and all within the Spreewald biosphere. If you're doing the Läufer-König, you run this on Saturday and the Spreewald half-marathon on Sunday (the hardcore ones, the Läufer-Krone, or "running crown" do the full marathon on Sunday. I'd taken my time during the Biosphere run and ran it in around 2h 12. Stopped for a slash in the woods at one stage, stopped to eat Spreewald gherkins and Haribo (not a combination I recommend) at a later station. Finished, hadn't broken sweat. Decided I'd really attack the half-marathon the day after and go out at PB pace (just under 1:44 back then) to see how long I could hold it. About 12 kilometres was the answer. Wheels came right off after that and I did 1h 52. Hadn't got the previous day's dead easy long one fully out of the legs.

Could probably do a job in the Premier League if we had the defensive midfield players to offer protection to the back four. Skipp covered for the full backs last season. Michael Starr 571 Posted March 10, 2022 (edited) He's peeved off I'd imagine. Can't get a look in despite being one of our better technical players in a poor side. I would seriously consider pushing him up to the wing and push Rashica up alongside Pukki, but that won't happen because we're now so desperately dependent on Rashica getting the ball on the edge of our own box and driving it forward to relieve the "defence". Rashica is literally our only outlet right now between defence and midfield, at least, until Normann can start threading those through balls again for Pukki to run onto.
