Godfrey in talks with Milan

I also think that Godfrey is over rated, and ideally we'll be signing a defender who is strong in the air.

People seem to rate him as the new Rio, looks more like the new Anton.

Getting £20m+ for this player would be fantastic business.

He's 22 and played about 70 top class games. He's nowhere near the finished article clearly but to write him off as overrated is a bit premature.

I feel that you may be taking a transfer rumour from an Italian blog a little bit too seriously Thirsty Lizard.

Perhaps, but even if the odds are 50/50 that would make £25m+ very difficult to turn down.

And if he is over rated he'd only be joining a long list of very expensive English centre defenders in recent years, John Stones the latest to be found out and now linked to West Ham and Aston Villa for less than half Man City paid for him.

Does that just apply to me or does it cover the other 15 or so posters who are talking about it on this thread????

Well you seemed to be giving a fair bit of weight to AC Milan's alleged opinion on the ability of Ben Godfrey, which the other 15 or so posters on this thread weren't.

And I was just pointing out that AC Milan may not rate him at all, because the story may be made up. Its a fair observation.

In theory I agree, but it might take a few games for it to gel sufficiently. Time will tell. We are short of pace and physicality in that area, so let's see if Sorensen and Sitti provide it. I would not be completely surprised if Rupp drops there on occasion as well.

EDIT: In fact, although it's unlikely, I think it would be best if Godfrey was the middle one of a back three.

We need to be on the front foot in the championship. Not sure if it sends out the right message if we're playing 3 at the back and half of our outfield players were defenders?

It doesn't always work like that. Atalanta over the last couple of seasons are a great example of how a three centre-back system can be ultra-offensive and functional. Their goalscoring records over the past two seasons on such a modest budget are ridiculous.

Was just about to post this, Wacky! 4-5-1 can become 4-3-3 very quickly, just as 5-3-2 can become 3-5-2. The nominal formations and positions are extremely malleable based on the height of the block, the attitude towards pressing, the offensive intent of the full-backs/wing-backs and so on.

Just compare the 4-4-2 of Arrigo Sacchi to the 4-4-2 of Sean Dyche, for example!

Aye, but two are wing-backs. By definition they're pretty fluid, and our attacking wing-back play was very much a feature of the Championship-winning season last time out.

Regardless of Godfrey's worth he's the only true athletic CB we have. Klose played about 30 games in the Championship (I think) but it looks as though he is going to struggle next season. Hanley's a decent CB but again has at least one lengthy lay off every season. We will have to wait and see with Zimbo. Meanwhile Ben has a hernia op and is back playing in a couple of weeks. Serious money will be needed to find a decent CB with a passing capability. I'd rather keep the player to be honest, it's such a specialist position where we need to strengthen not weaken.

I couldn't agree more.

I was holding out on posting this as didn't want to come across as negative or critical towards Godfrey, but I too feel that at this moment in time Godfrey's value is based on potential that he may never fulfil, so to get £25m for him now is a good deal. He clearly has the speed and technical skill of a modern centre back but he doesn't have the positioning and defensive instinct yet and if he doesn't develop those soon then he'll never be a top/good Premier League defender.

Looking at our five young prospects, I'm confident that Aarons and Buendia will have good careers at the top level, but Godfrey and Lewis still have more attributes to improve on and I'm less convinced they'll 'make it'. Cantwell could go either way.

Good post agree with everything you say,I'm not gonna add anything ,I don't need to you summed it up perfectly.😄

...are the wing backs on the pitch to the detriment of having (goalscoring) wingers...Hernandez, Placheta...Buendia if he's still here?. Youre taking away a fair few goals from the team there.

We wouldnt have scored 93 goals last season if we were playing 5 at the back , I know that

Would agree, although the wingers do tend to come inside, so the full backs can overlap.

I think though the idea of three at the back misses the real issue with us defensively. We are too easy to get through in the midfield - that’s because Tettey is our only truly defensive ball winning midfielder and he’s not mobile enough anymore (not for 46 games a season anyway). The other reason we’re too easy to cut through in midfield though is because we just set up too openly. The full backs get too far up too early, there are huge gaps between the midfield and defence, huge gaps between defensive midfield and attacking midfield. Adding an extra centre back won’t solve those problems.

And comment above about Godfrey in centre of a back three - I think he’d play on the left, so he can play those cross field balls more easily. Centre of a three limits his ability to do that.

As for the transfer fee - 25 mil or more for Godfrey, take it. Defensively he’s questionable imo and I think we could get a better defender than him for much cheaper, albeit one who’s maybe not as good as Godfrey with the ball.

Ok. You are in Ben's shoes.. Take the business you work for then look for the AC Milan in your business, you have got to be happy they are looking at you to bring on board.

I struggle to recall any English players moving to directly AC Milan. What a place to master your defensive skills, where defences are that, they defend. Good luck Ben, I hope you get the luck we would all need in our careers to pull this one off, big steps, dare and make it happen. You will have a few of us with a new Italian team to follow. Plus Milan is a hell of a place to enjoy life.

On the Milan side, if true, clever move. If he rocks it, in 2 years, Man U will pay £80m. If he does not, he is still worth £20+m.

I know who I’m going for. I hope AC Milan do think he’s worth a mint. I personally have watched every home game he’s played for us (other than the lock down ones) Live. As in there at the stadium not on the tv and many away games as well. I’m not impressed. My opinion which I understand I’m entitled to. And as we will sell all our f#c king assets anyway what does it matter. He’s worth some money so he will go. Of that I’m convinced. Let hope AC Milan pay top dollar for him.

You're convinced he will go - assuming not to another championship team? So naturally you're saying you're convinced he will go to a bigger club in a higher league but he's not good?

I wonder what all these well paid professional scouts are doing recommending him to their clubs (allegedly) then.

Same quality of scout that recommend Duda, Amadou, Van wolfswinkle, and that’s just us. Or are you saying we’re the only club who’s scouts recommend duds in the whole world.

I don’t understand some opinions on here, so we think 25 million is good value and should sell a 22 year old who’s caught the eye of top flight teams across Europe, but we can then use some of that money to buy a far better CB for a fraction of the price!

I can see who the FM users are! The real world works different to FM20.

I’m a little confused, so should we use 5 million to buy Rob Dickie from Oxford, at 24 and never played higher than league 1 must be a step up on the overrated Godfrey?

Can’t wait for all the same posters to start moaning if we kick off the season with Hanley / Klose combo conceding shedload of goals!

It's not that one scout is recommending him though, is it? We won't know the full truth of course but should he come to move i'm sure more will be revealed. But just going on recent rumours we have

AC Milan

Napoli

Dortmund

Leipzig

Tottenham

Arsenal

Having all been linked. Entertain me and let's say HALF those clubs are actually interested - are you saying ALL their scouts are getting this wrong and you know better?

According to Calciomercato- evidently a reputable source--Godfrey's representatives have met with AC Milan in a hotel in Milan. Strange for them to make this up.

Obviously Rio rates Ben and I would expect Rio to be one of the more trustworthy agents.

Godfrey has captained England U21 and is regarded by many to have all the abilities to make a top class defender-obviously some of the experts on here know better.

It's a wonderful move for Ben if it comes off. I think we have a good replacement in Famewo and would be happy to see him alongside Zimmerman next season. Zimm seems to be a good influence on the younger players.

I agree with Zimbo, he’s got a calm about him which must help younger players.

Trouble is behind him we have two defenders who really can’t be relied on to stay fit, Hanley and Klose are forever injured!

We really would need a replacement and Dickie is about the best we would be able to attract at our wage and budget. Is he really better?

Ray Wilkins Moved Directly there

But i think he may of been the only one

Put Godfrey next to a really good Experienced Defender and he will learn so much and become a much better Defender

The argument that Godfrey must be a brilliant centre back just because big clubs are interested is nonsense. Firstly, how many big clubs have looked at him and decided he isn't good enough?

Also, big sides sign young players for large fees all the time, but there's no guarantee that they'll make it; there are just as many misses as hits. I think if you look through the transfer dealings of the 'big six' over the past decade, at players under the age of 23 signed for £15m+, you'd find that some of them justified the fee, some were brilliant and increased in value, but a lot of them failed and were shipped out at a loss. There isn't a science to it and it's always a gamble.

Well you have eyes in your head. You’ve seen his defending. Positioning ect. Just cos he’s can dribble a little is turning on some scouts but I like a good row z and let the talent pass the ball.  Hey what do I know. I’d have replaced him at the start of this season. And look how well that’s turned out.

Now we get to the rub of it.

HH44 would rather Godfrey belted the ball out of the ground than try to retain possession and would've replaced one of our most potentially profitable players at the start of the season.

And yet he still wonders why other posters are questioning the logic. Classic.
