What will Aboh and co be thinking?

Well the multi-million pound Premier League stars of Nottingham Forest are stinking the place out against a team from the same division that we've just clinically despatched. Don't knock an away FA Cup Victory at a difficult League 1 ground. On to Anfield with Adam Idah leading the line - go on admit it - you're salivating at the prospect.

I am.

Just not quite as much as the Liverpool centre-backs.

Aboh has been playing wonderfully for the u21s by all accounts- 9 goals in 11 games.

Finley Welch also highly thought of.

A largely meaningless cup game.

Instead of giving them a spot on the bench we'd rather have two keepers? Why would any young player think they've got a future here?

There you go - you've got your explanation for the 2 goalkeeper subs now. Gianoullis was going to be on the bench but picked up a late problem. The third goalie always travels with the squad because it's a specialist position - hence Ansen going on to the bench.

Yeah, you're right, Alex Matos is another Benny Ashley-Seal.

Well neither of us know how good his career will be at this stage, but good luck to him I say.

He's played 4 minutes of football for the Chelsea first team, very premature to use him as a stick to beat the club with like many are and I feel you are getting yourself a bit over excited about a player who struggled to transition from our U18s to our U21s.

In 2007 Chelsea paid £5m for Michael Woods from Leeds and £1m for Jacob Mellis from Sheffield United, both created a bit of a stir with Abramovich seen to be using his wealth to hoover up all the best talent from U18's squads. Both got a few minutes for their first team, then ended up in the lower leagues or non-league.

I remember Man Utd pinching Kalam Moonairuck from our academy and flying him to Manchester from Stanstead airport to beat the 90 minute rule before buying his family a house in Manchester. At the same age as Alex Matos is now he got a game for the England U20's

There's probably several George Green's for every James Maddison. I hope Matos makes it in the game, especially if we have a sell on clause, but if he goes around thinking he's made it after playing 4 minutes for Chelsea and 68 minutes for Huddersfield then that would reduce his chances somewhat.

Some posters seem to find a negative slant to everything the club does.....even on a n8ght when we have won. Forest currently being held by Blackpool.

If you can't find anything positive about the club, why bother following  it? Go and do something else that makes you happy.

In Norwich, there's not a lot else on. Sadly, I think that's one of the biggest factors for the relatively high attendances our club has enjoyed, even in times of misery.

I've a mate in Sheffield who only abandoned trips to Wednesday because his fix could be fulfilled by following the Sheffield Sharks Basketball club (2,000 fans indoors can make a decent spectacle). Most football clubs based in cities have to compete against either other football clubs or different sports franchises. Norwich has a monopoly, and it's allowed some pretty egregious management without a significant exodus from Carrow Road. Given the huge gaps in seats this season, that luxury is starting to dwindle.

No, neither of us will know. But if you really try, you can use your brain to answer the question, "Will Alex Matos have a better career in football than Benny Ashley-Seal?"

I guess it depends on said brain what your answer will be.

What will Aboh and co be thinking?

"The lads did well, good away win." or "I wonder if they'll ever by a time that a man can run as fast as a cheetah" maybe "I'm definitely in favour of the pedestrianisation of the City center".

Benny Ashley-Seal scored a huge number of goals for our youth sides and left us at 18 after refusing a contract amid significant interest from numerous Premier League sides including Chelsea where he actually went on trial and played a few games for their development squad while still contracted to us after refusing pro terms.

He was playing every week for our U23s at 17 and 18. Arsenal and Leicester (who were in Europe and had just won the Premier League) also wanted him. At 17 he was named in The Guardian's list of top 20 prospects to look out for.

So if you can't see any similarities between his departure and the departure of Alex Matos then I don't know what else to say really, because they were very similar scenarios.

I assumed the two keepers thing was down to injury or illness or something.  Introducing youngsters into the first team squad (even with little intention of using them) has always been a ‘thing’, though it’s odd for it to be a third keeper!

Blooding youngsters is always tricky - Kamara springs to mind last season, we were all looking forward to see him but he seemed to try too hard and appeared not to be ready.  They need to be ready, we have to trust Knapper and the coaches know what they are doing.

Chelsea seem to make a business out of stockpiling young players and loaning them out year after year, they've been doing it for about a decade and currently have 21 players out on loan. My personal favourite was Jamal Blackman who made his living working for 'Chelsea Rent-a-Keeper' for 7 years.

I see your Jamal Blackman and raise you Lewis Baker.

Joined Chelsea as a nine-year-old, made his debut in the FA Cup in 2014 and then made his second and final appearance more than eight years later in 2022.

OK, he has clearly made a lot of money and played for some big clubs in some interesting places, but I doubt a pathway like this was best for his development and he must wonder 'what if' had he had a permanent home.

Scott Sinclair who came on for Bristol this evening was another who made a handful of appearances for Chelsea before being farmed out all over the place. Similar to above, he's carved out a decent career for himself and made plenty of wedge I'm sure. Fondly remembered at Celtic too.

I can see that I've encountered a very binary thinker.

Just thought I'd point out that its too early to get excited by Alex Mato's 4 minutes of football for Chelsea where he was used to run the clock down, just as it would have proven wise not to get excited by Benny Ashley-Seal starting for Wolves against Man Utd in the FA Cup when he was 20. That is all.

Good shout!

I see that he has won the national cup in both Holland and Turkey though which is v. cool for an English player to lay claim to.

I’m more concerned about Liam Gibbs right now.    Talented lad played out of position and not given a proper go in his preferred position, (a position the team has no proper personnel for), his confidence and youthful exuberance completely shattered by this manager who seems to have no interest in bringing him through.

Let’s not forget this lad did plenty enough for everyone to be quite excited when he came through initially.

He needs to get away for his own sake.   To not get a look in again last night, he must be wondering what’s gorn on!

Moaning and complaining is what makes them happy.

I suspect the youth players were grateful to be spared a tricky encounter which they could have been used as scapegoats if we had lost.

It's also quite right we use these opportunities to give first team fringe players match practice before youth players.

Although I admit I'd like to see Ken Aboh, Finley Welch and Pedro Lima perhaps given a chance. They sound like they're in good form right now.

Genuine question - what is his preferred position? He looks like an 8 to me.

With the right coaching and game time I think he could be our defensive midfielder as he has all the attributes.

He has looked poor this season, but that is purely down to Wagner and his insistence in playing him in an advanced role. He should be growing into the first team not regressing. Another example of Wagner inept approach.

I'd be surprised (and worried to be honest) if our younger players had a mindset where they were grateful to not be picked for the first team.

I do agree we should be using fringe first team players (getting Sorenson some minutes is a good example) but I'd still argue there should be one or two spaces on the bench in games like these for players who've been excelling at youth level.

Signed a new long term deal in July so he's hardly surprised by Wagner's coaching and tactics. "He needs to get away for his own sake" is a bit of a stretch 6 months into a 5 year deal.

I suspect he was expecting more involvement than what he’s getting.   Now if he’s happy sitting on a 5yr contract and doesn’t have much ambition beyond the money, then we have another problem!   Also, Wagner was fire-fighting last season having taken over from Smith.

I don’t expect he is happy though.    I imagine he’s gutted that this manager hasn’t got belief in him or isn’t brave enough to throw him in his preferred position.    Let’s face it, Wagner has tried very little to change the central midfield deficiencies.

Your comment seems very simplistic.   He needs to be progressing now, instead he’s regressing and we need a CDM.  If he’s got ambition, he needs to get away if he can because he’s not getting a chance at CDM with Wagner.
