Anyone Caught Knapping?

Recommended Posts

The more we read about the appointment of Ben Knapper and the way he thinks, the more we realise that the Attanasio era is going to be no different to the Socialists' era.

The self-funding model is going to continue through developing and selling players. Norwich City will continue to be a production line factory that benefits both other clubs higher up the food chain and the owners of Norwich City. Attanasio is playing a blinder here. Getting the club on the cheap at 2002 prices then selling big when the time is right.

Where does this leave the fans? Firmly on the margins is the answer. We already know that the self-funding model stands no chance of succeeding in the EPL and the club habitually shuns the cup competitions so fans will have to swallow the undeniable realisation that the Championship is as good as it gets.

There are very few clubs around the world which aren't selling clubs....I'm also not saying that you are wrong with regards to the new owners being just like Delia & Michael, but wouldn't it be better to wait & see what they'll be like as outright owners, rather than judge them before they've even got their feet under the table.

The point I am making is that Norwich City is an aggressive selling club. There are selling clubs, then there is Norwich City. The academy and all the investment that goes into it is designed purely to production line players to sell. Chase never had anything remotely so systematic. The same can be said for the South American recruitment operation.

His system was to sell players to pay back the short term loans he took from the banks.

Chase also had to balance the books with no Sky money and attendances of under 15,000 most weeks.

It’s hardly surprising that Delia & Michael are looking to pass the club on to someone with a similar outlook to themselves is it?

Yes Vince. Right from the start it was shown that Attanasio wasn't the proverbial 'big spender' where the Brewers were concerned & that his approach to growing the club and business was about much more than that.

No surprises there.

I think his son will ultimately play a bigger and bigger role with us on a day to day basis and probably get the place on the board that he is 'owed' as a result of his investment.

As for Knapper-I've read the posts and opinions of those who claim we bottled it by not headhunting someone who was already a DOF or similar, however, I suspect their disappointment surrounds the fact that they thought, somehow, we'd display some 'ambishun' by appointing Ferran Soriano, Michael Edwards or Julian Ward.

Knapper was once thought of as a possible replacement for Edu at Arsenal. If that still remains the case in 2-3 years time, then he will have done a very good job here.

And also a minuscule wage budget vs now…

You can say that again. The next set of Accounts will probably show a similar spend for finishing halfway in the Championship as Brentford spent for halfway up the Premier League the season before. Over 8 times the £8 million in 2002 compared to apparently the same share price as that year and that offered to the elite only.

The Orwellians turned Johnsonians in action.

I'm still not sure what it is that you dislike about the football club.

Chase lied about selling players. I actually quite like the fact Webber was open and honest about what to expect. Sets expectations.

The Championship teams currently in positions 2 & 3 haven't spent £ zillions - surely our first objective should be to compete with them?

We are 3 points behind Preston with a superior goal difference how is this not competitive?

Hang on.... But if you listen to some people around here getting rid of Delia means we will win the champions league...

Im confused I thought new owners meant we would be unstoppable.

Except he didn't balance the books, and has to take the blame for such low attendances when we were finishing third in the Premier League.

This will be a big issue when the Americans do takeover. Given their wealth there will always be calls for more money to be throw at it. I personally think we might see parachute payments type budget be run even if we don’t have the actual parachute payments. This would enable us to be competitive in the upper end of the championship . Then the  ability to have a go if we get promoted.

Nobody else had any Sky money either and, despite what some on here claim about the current state of English football, attendances were appalling.  On the other hand wages were far lower.

It’s common to all clubs, the scale of wages in 1996 vs 2023 and is roughly proportional to clubs’ massively increased income

I doubt many NCFC fans would expect PNE or Ipswich to be ahead of us. However, you make a fair point if that's the level we're aiming for...

That’s true, attendances were appalling early 80s into the 90s nationwide. I’ll blame Thatcher and violence for a lot of that.

Have our attendances increased by a bigger percentage than other Clubs since then?

Probably actual attendances were declared in those days rather than today's fake inflated ones.

Not entirely so as my Brentford and Burnley comparisons exemplify. Some Clubs are more modest about expanding their wage bill so quickly based on Premier League receipts which they can't guarantee going forwards which explains the difficulty we have created for ourselves.

So called socialists who are actually Johnsonians pandering to the old boys networks and poor value for money Club staff rather than genuinely supporting the fans.

Don't be daft. That only happened right at the end of his tenure and wasn't commonplace for the other 9 years.
