If wed kept Howie..

The £0 million Norwich team that could have been

Recommended Posts

I was thinking.. what's the best team we could have formed for free...

The rules - no academy players.. no current players.. and players as they were at their peaks..

My first attempt..

Krul, Edworthy, Doherty, Zimmermann, Drury, O'Neil, Bradley Johnson, Clingan, Francis, Pukki, McVeigh

Slow at the back, small upfront and tackly in the middle..

I am taking peak to mean they might have been playing at their peak for us.

Krul

Nedergaard Zimmerman Walsh Dennis Van Wyk

Putney Crook O’Neil Stuart

Pukki Cottee

I am really hoping you don’t mean Steve Walsh at CB. If you do, then you’re either on a wind up or never watched him “play” for us. Think Captain Canary would have been a better choice

Martin Chivers was loaned - does that count as free?

Johnson, Clingan and McVeigh were all free transfers.

Was Dublin a freebie?

Good shout.

Whittaker and Trybull haven't been mentioned yet either, but would probably only make the bench in this hypothetical XI.

Both times, yes he was.

I would say Steve Walsh was the worst player I’ve ever seen in a Norwich Shirt. Bottom 5 at least.

We paid £40k for Martin Peters, one of our greatest players who played more than 200 games Probably less than the weekly wage of Gibson?

That's as good as a free.

Yes Capt'! 💪 A quick Google tells me that £40k in '75 is £317k in todays money, and bizarrely enough, is only £17k off what Chippy cost us £80k / £300k. I'm not sure which was the better bargain, but I'd put them both in my all-time NCFC XI.

I agree entirely, but it was hard to find a centre back who joined for free, and when he was at his prime he was a good player, just not when he played for us.

McVeigh was about 800k wasn't he? On that night where we signed 6

EDIT: ignore that, he was a free, weird I've always thought he cost us about 800k and thought that a bargain :classic_biggrin:

You are not the first to believe Chivers was a loan, but he was actually a perm signing.

Ha, I thought he was a buy, but someone convinced me about a month ago on here he was only a loan, I thought I was being clever suggesting he was a loan on this thread. Now I'm confused and my confidence is shot. This MB is a minefield of the memory! 🤷‍♂️

In more recent times can we throw in Ondrej Duda into the awful pile? Had one good game and then just seemed to give up
