Just saw Some Like It hot - yes (stayed at the Coronado myself

Some of the best screen writing and directing ever  imo.

Billy Wilder, so no surprise there.

It still amazes me that Shawshank was a box office flop at first but is now a favourite of millions of people.

Good writing, good actors, good direction and a story where the human spirit eventually triumphs over evil. What's not to like.

Hear My Song is a beautiful film. It's strange that it's rarely shown on TV.

It hasn't very much. Think it was written and directed by a very young Dunbar - I reckon he had the idea for a while and must have so wanted to produce it. Although it is high kitsch and full of Irish cliches it has charm, tons of humour and there is always the surreal line "If the phone doesn't ring, it's me".

Thanks for the Ealing link. Will definitely watch that. I could watch any of them tbh. They evoke a period of time that feels innocent and very English. Of course, travel back there in time and life would have been very tough and unfair and that innocence may well have been hard to find!. I think I prefer English films to American ones on the whole (seeing I'm alright Jack, Get Carter, The 39 Steps above for instance - would watch them any time). Sexy Beast was terrific too for the sheer violence and threat underneath but still retained a very English vibe.

I did wonder about a few foreign films but worried I would be sent to Pseuds Corner but what the hell...I would add to my list The Grocer's Son (Clotilde Hesme) and Romuald et Juliette and Caché (just a couple by the great Daniel Auteuil). Cinema Paradiso is also on your list (fantastic) and Les Intouchables is listed above to. I would suggest Bicycle Thieves could be added too.

I don't think I've ever watched ten in their entirety (can probably count the number of times I've been to the cinema on my fingers). I'm gonna give a special mention to Titanic though for being so ****ing boring that I actually cheered when the ship hit the iceberg.

Just for you😊

I preferred the one where Jack was getting blown off by a mermaid, but can't find it.

Don't get me wrong, it's one of my favourites too. Just wonder why it was overlooked when it first came out.

Stephen King innit. Few better storytellers.

Yes, Hitchcock said a great film is about 3 things, the script, the script and the script.

I like Ricardo's definition of films one could watch over and again. So:

A Hitchcock double bill of The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes.

Walkabout (memories of Oz).

Le Samourai (French noir).

Pandora and the Flying Dutchman. A very odd film.

I Know Where I'm Going.

The Third Man.

The Maltese Falcon (the sharpest of sharp dialogue).

Shanghai Express (Marlene Dietrich...).

North by North-West.

Casablanca (with the greatest single line of dialogue in movie history - "You want my advice? Go back to Bulgaria.")

I did like Major League as a comedy, and it did have my favourite line:

"You tryin' to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?"

My favourite line is from Sunset Boulevard  where the William  Holden character says" you're Norma Desmond, you used to be in silent pictures, you used to be big"" and Norma replies, " I am big, its the pictures that got small."

Yes, another couple of films that I've watched several times.

Some films you watch once and that's it. Others become like old friends even when you know the plot and half the dialogue they are still watchable.

Possibly slightly OT, but I loved the novel Dune when I was young, and thought the first (recent) film captured it well, so looking forward to the next instalment. It would be nice if they could do one book per film, but then it was a big book.

Trust me, it's in nearly everyone's top 10 for a reason. Spare a couple of hours and give it a go.

Same here!

The best I've seen at the cinema were a remastered version of Jaws, Fargo and Hell or High Water. 🦈 ❄️🌵

Fave film, surely I can't be serious, is Airplane. 🤣

Not seen Almost famous in years. Love that film.

In the middle of watching the new muppets TV series. It's classic muppets.

It's never officially Christmas in my house untill I've sat down after the last working day before and watched muppet Christmas carol and Elf
