Arron Ramsey

Can’t understand why we sent him back due to injury, played for Middlesbrough last night . Don’t make sense unless player was unhappy and did not want to play for us .

It's an odd once. First thing he did when he turned up at Boro was say something like "I always knew I was coming here" or something like that. Pretty sure there's a former Villa coach at Boro right now too.

You are correct!

Aaron Danks

Danks was assistant manager to Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht, before leaving to be assistant to Dean Smith and Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa. He has also coached at Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion and England U21.

The ‘I was always going to come here’ thing was presumably once he was aware of their interest, ie after returning to Villa; he’s young and wants to play.

Tbh I’m not overly fussed, he was certainly injured for that spell and we now have a slightly different formation, with our own players doing ok in it.  I certainly hope he doesn’t come back to haunt us, though.

I was at Bramall Lane last night, and he slotted straight into the Parmo's team when he came on with 10 minutes to go. Indeed he was given quite a bit of responsibility to take the ball and keep it in the Blades half. From that short view 'tis a shame he wasn't available for Wagner. Given we are only 16 days past the transfer window close he looked fully fit! Strange indeed ...

maybe the doctor who said Ramsey would be out for months

was the same doctor who said Hayden would make a full recovery at the start of season

I'm sure he'll go on to be a decent player, but being honest until I saw this post l'd already forgotten all about him.

He's only just 20 He was 19 during his spell with us. He obviously felt more comfortable with coaches he knew. He probably found it difficult here with all the negativity. If you look back even through this message board there was lots of unwarranted criticism of him.

Adam Idah gets similar. He turned 22 just the other day. For the position he plays playing full international football at 19 and scoring in the EPL at 20 is 'kicking on'. The only thing that's held him back is injury.

I'd rather progress our own players than someone else's. We should only ever borrow with a view to buying.

Hopefully he's not the same doc who's assessing Marquinhos right now....

What age is a fair one for criticism then?

What was it Hansen (I think it was) said, if you're good enough you're old enough. Works both ways.

Nothing wrong with criticism, it can be positive, not if its unwarranted though. Whatever the age.

You’ve kind of answered your own point. It’s Michael Owen at 18 or Jamie Vardy at 26 or whatever.

I mean, I saw Rooney warming up for Everton at about 16 and he was clearly outstanding. He was also already built like a fully mature bloke. Smashing balls past Nigel Martyn from about 40 yards effortlessly.

I think we forget sometimes that these players are young and have mistakes in them and that it’s all part of the learning curve. Ramsay for instance, I thought, showed huge promise as a “link man”, got his goals but was a bit naive at times. That’s youth and lack of experience.

If we look back, the lad Hendo took a bit of a hiding from the crowd, and while he hasn’t torn the football world apart, he’s had a great career. The Murphy boys - especially Jacob - took pelters, yet there he is playing his part in the Arab Rising.

I guess it’s just the nature of football, in this era anyway, it’s now or nothing.

Im not sure there’s a definitive age where criticism becomes valid. I just think, and it’s just my opinion, that it should come with a degree of experience. These youngsters are being picked on ability but they are still learning. A Racehorse trainer might get fined for “schooling in public” but for footballers it is probably the fastest and most effective way to learn. And that is why we blood so many out on loan, so they make their mistakes there instead of here. Possibly. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Seems odd to me that he can be loaned out to two different sides in the same season. Theoretically he could have scored for us v Middlesbrough in one game and then vice versa. Thought there was a rule about that but clearly not. Maybe I'm over thinking it 🤷

My understanding is you can only play competitively for two teams in a season. Ie us and Boro in this case, assuming he didn't make any competitive appearances for villa.

I beleive in extenuating circumstances they can allow a third team.

Ramsey played well for us, but his presence meant Dowell was starved of an opportunity to play in a role that suited his talents. Dowell's subsequent performances more than outweigh the loss of Ramsey.
