Nothing to do with Norwich, but had the misfortune of going to Sheffield earlier today and it got me thinking about their respective clubs. Thought I would ask a set of impartial fans.

I've always kind of thought of Wednesday as Sheffield's primary club and the Blades as secondary.

My attitudes to Wednesday and Sheffield in general are driven by the Primacy effect, in that, during my adolsecence, Wednesday reached cup finals, played in the UEFA cup and had Di Canio and Carbone. Sheffield United had Brian Deane.

Recency effect would flip this and frame United as the 'bigger' club due to recent successes.

At the tender age of 16 I travelled to Hillsborough to watch Norwich in the FA Cup and concluded Sheffield was the biggest dump Id ever been to. In fairness it's a much nicer place these days but I still dont like it.

So, which club do you consider to be the 'bigger' club?

If you think Sheffield is a dump, you've obviously never been to Wolverhampton.

Actually I have! Several times for the football, and to see Bjork and later Sigur Ros - I dont know why they're both Icelandic...

Looked at the statistics, I had not realised how similar they are.  With Wednesday marginally leading the way in terms of league wins, although all a long time ago.

I reckon I thought they were bigger because Hilsborough used to host fa cup semi finals…..  After that the rest was based on ignorance.

I have been to Wolverhampton and Sheffield, and much preferred Sheffield, I would chuck in Luton and Coventry in as my soul less / charisma less places.

My in-laws were from that neck of the woods (half an hour away) so I used to go and watch the Owls sometimes when we visited - my view is probably skewed by those visits! This was in the days of Ron Atkinson/Danny Wilson as manager, with players like Carbone and Di Canio - they were pretty decent at the time.

Interesting poll result so far. There is a degree of entitlement from Wendy's because of their European exploits but recent years the Blunts are ahead. Also, the quality of the respective stadia has narrowed over recent years. Bramall Lane is now superior I'd say as better atmosphere being fully enclosed and at least they have continued to invest in them, whereas Wendy's are doing it on the cheap.  This was evidenced by the Women's Euros being hosted there. Bramall Lane's proximity to the city centre helps too.

Where I live, if you were to mark the size of the club on the number of kids wearing respective shirts, then the Blades are definitely in the ascendancy. My sons team has seen a 2 to 1 advantage in terms of red n white to blue n white shirt wearing kids.

So, locally many an argument still but generally accepted United just shade it. But both clubs need to sort out ownership issues, both kops need demolishing and rebuilding before they truly are 21st century clubs.

My perception has always been -

Sheff Utd - more rough and ready, traditionally with more working class fans.

Sheff Wed - more posh and with more fans from the better off parts of Sheffield.

Dare I say it's a bit like us and Ipswich? Wednesday have historically been the bigger club but United have moved past them in more recent times?

I see way more Blades shirts than Wednesday

Controversial!

I wonder what the result of a Norwich/Ipswich poll would be on other clubs forums

I think it depends on which way you look at it. If you go by the past decade or so I would say United, but if you by history I would say Wednesday

Probably about right. If you ask anyone over the age of 35, they'd go Wednesday, but if you ask someone younger, they'd be more likely to choose United.

Rotherham Utd.

Any club supported by Barry Chuckle is obviously the biggest club in Yorkshire.

To me?

Pics or didnt happen

The thing about Sheffield, like most places, is it has its good parts and it’s not so good parts. Unfortunately for the centre of Sheffield it was a victim of a lot of building in the 60s. BT have a lot of people who work there and I’ve been there a fair bit over the years. I remember thinking after a break of several years that their site would be easy to find as it was in a 60s concrete office block. As I drove into the city I realised my mistake as I’d forgotten that every other building appeared to be a 60s concrete office block. On top of this, retail was decimated when the Meadowhall shopping centre was built.

But there are equally some very posh and desirable areas. A work colleague who currently lives in *Ascot* has Sheffield down as his plan B if it all goes t1ts up for him and he has to sell because he likes the attractive part so much. It’s helped by being a two university city. Sheffield Hallam (was Nick Clegg’s constituency) scores above places like Tunbridge Wells and Windsor on measures like average income and number of professionals.

On top of which, you only have to drive for 20 minutes out of the city to be in some of England’s most beautiful scenery.

Why else would I have lived here so long? I'm just a "dee dah"! (slang for posh gits in Sheff from the not so posh bits of Rovrum; oh look at him, lah dee dah!). 😄
