Historical Transfer Rumours

And we lost Martin O'Neill just as he was approaching his managerial peak (his record was not at all shabby either in the short time with us) ...and all for the lack of £320,000 if my memory has served me correctly.

I still think it was a bit sh*tty of O'Neill to walk out on us after giving him a chance at a higher level. I have always believed he'd have taken us back up that season, Windass or not, so I don't see why it was such a deal breaker for him. We were second in the league when he resigned.

It was strange and disappointing yes. But it was the lack of backing to buy (a fairly reasonable sum I think at that time) that annoyed him. That has always been my impression - but he was clearly a very impatient bloke and believed enough in himself to walk. Leicester gained a lot.

William Carvalho from last summer will join the list in a few years.

Does William Carvalho actually exist though? seems to have been linked with every team in the country.

To be fair to O'Neill, he thought he could work with Chase, but he was wrong so he got out - after he knew where he was going!

I remember the Windass deal at £600K.

I wonder if Martin would have enjoyed working with Smith and Jones.

O’Neill would have never tolerated such austerity and parochialism.

I don’t see why not. Chase refusing to buy Windass was his way of telling O’Neill there was actually no money to spend, as other events not long afterwards confirmed. With Smith and Jones O’Neill would have been taking the job knowing what the financial constraints were.

Wasn't there one for Alan Lee signing permanent aswell after his loan? I seem to remember it going on a while but nothing happened (although I could just be mis-remembering)

Luciano Becchio might well have been a rumour for all we saw of him. Hughton's forgotten man? "Luciano, Luciano where art thou Luciano?" cried the ladies.

A fan's favourite at Leeds where he scored for fun, he played just 13 league games for City spread over three seasons and even failed to emulate RVW's goalscoring feats whilst wearing the Yellow.

(Wouldn't mind the Leeds version now as a back-up striker.)

He did play, but sure if it was a loan cut short by injury. Only played a few games, iirc.

Edit - according to wiki played 2 games on loan from blackburn

I’d forgotten that one, we got Fry’d good and proper.

Didn't Dion Dublin ' break' the news we were signing him on a midweek football highlights show.
