873K vaccinations today, bloomin marvelous.....well done to all concerned. 1.4 million tests fantastic work.

Please dont blow this by allowing travel abroad, we need to batten down the hatches and keep them locked.

So again UVDL is threatening to axe exports of the AZ vaccine to nations outside the EU like the UK, if AZ dont meet the output criteria laid down by, presumably, the EU.

This raises questions for me, due to my ignorance of the facts but...Just how much control does UVDL's EU have over the AZ vaccine?

What is the AZ company's nationality?...where is the AZ vaccine  produced?..does the EU have any control over contracts made for the vaccine between UK and the AZ company? Heard her also say earlier in the week about  having the power to change patents to..im at a loss to understand why she continues to pursue such a threatening stance even though i suppose its about the slowness of the EU vaccine program rollout in general.

I would be expecting that second doses to start to overtake the fist dose numbers! But great figures being done now all over the globe....great to see.

There will be a slowing in April when the focus goes on second doses but in truth most of the heavy lifting has now been done.

Possible evidence that the levelling off is due to school openings while other age groups continue to decline.

I know this is a Mirror article ...but it quotes PHE and the views of health specialists / professionals and underlines what a few posters have been saying, that we need the whole world vaccinated asap. Copying for interest.

Article 122 of the Lisbon treaty allows EU to seize àssets in times of great threats to security of the EU. The clauses are designed for wartime use so there is some surprise they would use it for vaccine procurement

Yeh with low numbers now some focus of testing on school pupils is bound to influence the distribution

840k vaccines given in a day, that’s just awesome, I’m utterly  impressed. Everyone I know who’s had a jab has agreed with my experience that it was an incredibly smooth and well organised process.

We know the level will reduce for a time in April and most will be taken up with 2nd doses, but the recent developments have just confirmed my view that the people dealing with our vaccine programme from top to bottom really know what they’re doing and are an example to the whole world.

Yep and the fact that they’ve been willing to suspend the vaccine programme with no real justification to support doing so would heavily undermine them trying to claim at the same time that they need the doses as an urgent and critical security matter.

From the COS thread.

At last the trial data for Oxford is in from America, safe and highly effective at 79 % with the doses 4 weeks apart. 100 % with servere COVID ( ie no hospitalisation ).
It will still be a month - 2 months before it is authorised, so unless they start making more or allow their stocks to be used it will still sit in fridges.

Good news on the age profiles, confirming efficacy for over 65’s and crucially in a trial of 100,000 people no serious side effects.

This weeks worldwide vaccine doses sees 89 million doses issued. We are now up to 447 million and are now vaccinating at 11 million per day.

The doses per day now stand at 11 million.
I appreciate you are giving the EU a lot of stick, but I really think some of your attention should be aimed at the other 3 power houses America, China ( and although not a total ban ) India who governments have just stood back and not even mentioned.their export bans, when they are even refusing to export the bags needed,

To show this around 70 % of vaccine given is in India, and America or supplied to countries by Russia or China ( mainly free ).
In June several governments ( ours included, but Trump would not commit ) stated any country that gave vaccine to under 50’s healthcare workers ect would be immoral. Strange how things change when you realise you are one of the countries with endless supplies.

Yes I forgot that some major data on the age ( over 65’s ).Still doubt US will use it, they have thrown obstacles in at every junction to date though I will be happy to be proved wrong.

It was interesting that these trials I understood were over 2nd dose 4 week, 8 week and 12 week, but I have a feeling because of the mistakes made by AZ in the original trials they only started 8 and 12 weeks at the end of December. They do quote however the trial amount of people 32,000 and then go on to say the trial is highly effective with the 2nd dose at 4 weeks.
I will keep an eye out if you can as well for comments on the 8 - 12 weeks, but then probably add it to the COS thread for discussion.

Should have added if all parties have any sense, some of their huge stock piles could be diverted to Europe avoiding them joining the ban on exports and fulfilling the EU contracts. Even if it means AZ replacing those to the US over a couple of months.

I believe they are considering? or have agreed? to send some of their huge stockpile to Canada and Mexico

I read that to, just seems sensible for AZ to borrow some as well.

I wish US were authorising now, would be very interesting to see if they went 4 week or 12 week.

I dont know if that was aimed at me but if you read the thread you will see that I have also been critical of the US.

I dont know enough about the situation in India, I believe they have supplied the UK with over  5 milion doses recently but am also aware that the latest "shortfall" as Hancock described it, was down to a further shipment from India being delayed, as I said to BF earlier. To be honest I could understand it if India did impose some sort of export control, massive population with huge areas of deprivation, a highly vunerable population. I dont know if they have stockpiles of vaccine but suspect not. Are they vaccinated those in greatest need? I dont know the answer to that either.

I do have a big problem with Western democracies who have massive stockpiles already, some of which might not even be authorised for domestic use, who impose or threaten to impose export controls. Also with our neighbours who have made deliberate decisions that have hightened vaccine hesitancy in an already vaccine hostile environment, as shown by Mori ( I think ) survey results today, sit on stockpiles, yet talk about about export bans.

The data for 8-12 weeks will be intersting, when do you think this will become available?

Really good news about AZ and the US. Thanks.

Here is another hopeful snippet on Israel and their progress.

Time to get our "special relationship" with Biden underway, he could make up our expected shortfall from India and AZ replaces it in a couple of months time  🙂
