Although I'm very optimistic we will eventually beat/control it this autumn barring some vaccine escaping variant I don't wish to call it over until it is without extenuating circumstances (i.e. normal life, schools back) - and that's not yet. Hence I remain cautious (realistic) at present but hopeful a last autumn wave will be manageable.

Hence I remain cautious (realistic) at present but hopeful a last autumn wave will be manageable. I've never at any stage thought it was over. Nor do I think we will have one other biggish wave to manage. One senior nurse (on Twitter) who has worked on Covid in ICU throughout believes (with the darkest humour....guess it's her way of coping) that C19 is like a 10 level game that will probably last a decade in terms of causing problems. Her optimistic view is that we might be at Level 6. So, this will run and run. I'm sure you'll agree too though. Its a question of management so that it becomes a problem like many other causes of mortality, diseases for which we can work out solutions. I'm very hopeful given the advances in vaccines and treatments, escalated globally through this pandemic, that we can treat this. Just hope the turning point comes in 2022 not years later. As for the daily numbers, it's always been the week on week comparisons that are important, we're all familiar with the weekly cycle of reporting by now. If you'd have offered me these numbers on July 19th I'd have bitten your hand off ! Looking forward to the ONS numbers tomorrow with interest.

Scotland were a couple of weeks ahead of us and they have slowly levelled off in the past 14 days. I expect any decline will be quite gradual over the coming weeks. sonyc 5,542 Posted August 6, 2021 As a few have lamented on here, the vaccination rate has dropped off significantly these last two months. And as @Well b backintimated previously some other countries have stolen a march on the UK. This article states that EU countries had a "dire" start but have since caught up and overtaken us because of their "tough" incentives and messaging. Here though we have baulked at such harder messages and have preferred a softly softly approach. A higher rate of vaccination amongst younger people would have lowered the number of new infections but there is a sense too that maybe the 'plan' is to achieve herd immunity through natural infections in the younger age cohort groups? https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/aug/06/six-eu-states-overtake-uk-covid-vaccination-britain-rollout-slows Perhaps the booster programme will mark a refresh?... (reading it is likely to be Pfizer - again something mentioned on the thread a few months ago).
