"Things had been going so well, and then I went on loan to Norwich, which I thought would be good for me, It turned out to be a fight, a battle. I learned a lot. At the time, I didn’t enjoy it on the pitch. It didn’t look like I was going back to play at Chelsea – when I was getting picked for Scotland, I wasn’t playing either – so I was just a young kid and it was a low time for me.

I had great people around me like Kenny McLean and Grant Hanley who really helped me through. I learned how strong I was. I put a smile on my face, even though I was hurting, especially when I was living on my own in Norwich. Some nights, I’d be sitting there thinking, 'This is c**p', but that’s where my family helped me. You can only learn from that."

When i was really bored I looked around and thought, hey Toddy, your mrs is Fit, Like Iron Bru on a hangover. Bangin. So I took a pop and he went off and sulked like a wee girly man"

I had wondered if a couple of camps had developed - one with the Scottish players vs others *cough* Cantwell *cough*

Billy Gilmour sucks.

Is this comment on some way related to what someone’s alleged girlfriend allegedly saw in him? 😐

It's a young lad moving to the sticks away from family and friends, hailed as the 'saviour' and it didn't work out for him.

His stint here was very poor but he wasn't the only one to have a stinking season that year and at least he was always available to be picked. He's certainly not on the level of Brandon Williams for example.

Give the guy a break.

To be fair I'm not saying anything negative about him, simply copy and pasting an interview the Pink'Un posted.

If anything in hindsight its fair to say he was not the player we needed who came in at the wrong time and given all the hype given his chelsea and wonder kid status he was held up a little too high and failed to live up to expectations.

But the past is the past and you can't change It so good luck to him and I hope he does well.

was always going to struggle coming in after Skip too.

Some loans work well, and others don't.

I can't remember who it was who said it but there is no better example of Webber being able to spot a player but struggling to build a team than the midfield he assembled that summer.

I can't work out how any manager was supposed to build a functional midfield out of Norman, PLM, Gilmour and McLean.

Felt like a lot of the problem was fans, but not necessarily ours.

It became a bit of a vicious cycle, where Norwich people would say he wasn't doing that well, and Chelsea/ national numpties would all tell us that was **** and we had the second coming of Iniesta. Our side would get louder, the opposition would get louder, until battle lines of 'utterly useless' and 'amazing but destroyed by Norwich' were the only sides to choose from.

It happens that way a lot on this forum, too.

Exactly. And you could expand your last sentence to say this "forum/Twitter/the entire Internet". The longer a discussion goes on, the more positions become extreme and entrenched.

The boring, centrist truth was basically the wrong move for him and for the club (though it might have benefited him a bit in terms of toughening him up, I suppose). Now that that weird Scottish Man Utd fan has mercifully vacated this forum, we can safely say that he's a good player. Just not the right player for us that season.

Yup, I said as soon as the transfer window closed in the summer of 2021 that we'd had a very good window in terms of the individuals we had signed but had concerns about the lack of experience and leadership as a group.

It would've been a top window on Football Manager, but it needed an Ashley Barnes or two to function in real life.

He can moan all he likes but at the time, and probably now, you could put this lad down on the grass and kick him out of the stadium with a leisurely 6ft run up he’s so small.

So what did he expect exactly? Our objective was surviving a relegation battle not developing Gilmour.

It didn't work out but it was surprising how much game time he got bearing in mind his very ordinary performances.
