  1. The facts are that Maddison was signed in the winter window of 2016. McNally left in May 2016. It''s possible that Martin made the decision, but i would suggest DM had the final say, as he seemed to on everything else. Quite how much either party (RM or DM) contributed would certainly make a good discussion if we could persuade them to come and discuss it over a pint. Interestingly in that same window we signed Matt Jarvis, Ivo Pinto, Timm Klose, Steven Naismith and Patrick Bamford, plus "future prospects" Ben Godfrey and Ebou Adams. A good example of some good, and some less good. Some money "pee''d against the wall", and some money which provided the building block of this season. And that , Ladies and Gentlemen, is football.
  2. Law 12 (part of) DENYING A GOAL OR AN OBVIOUS GOAL-SCORING OPPORTUNITY Where a player denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by a deliberate handball offence the player is sent off wherever the offence occurs. Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offending player is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off.
  3. Yes sad news . Best player they ever had I would say. Hated his guts until he played for England - remember his header against the Sweaties? RIP Beatie
  4. Farke will be out on his ear at Christmas if we are bottom 6. Webber firmly believes in this squad , and would see any failure of the team to at least appear to have a chance of top 6 by the end of the year , to be the fault of Farke and the coaches. What Farke deserves is irrelevant. He is a well paid employee , in a precarious, results based industry. He knows the score - he is most certainly not stupid.
  5. I might be wrong, but since the pitch has been a Desso pitch (which was renewed this season) , and the previous one was around 14 years old, I think the slope is negligible. Certainly this new one is laser levelled and I would have thought the previous one was too. They tend to "fall" from the centre spot for draining but there may be a few foibles in the land leading down to the River! The new pitch at Conley is also laser levelled. Its fabulous . McNally had a philosophy to put all of the money into the playing squad - which got us up , kept us up , and then got us back up. Then it failed to get us up again , and left us in a tricky financial position , which Webber is now trying to put right . Webber is working to a different plan it would seem , by putting monies into areas other than the playing squad, albeit he has borrowed the money from investors to pump money into the academy. I don''t agree that money was peed up against anything, it simply didn''t work the last time we tried to go straight back up, and the lack of non playing investment at Colney has caught up with us at a time that we are not in the Prem. If we had put all of the money into the squad , and we had gone up as we did in 2015, we would now have Prem money to spend all over the Club. Its just skinning the cat in different ways , the success of which is judged by results.
  6. Of course we have had a terrific financial boost through the sale of two Murphy''s and a Maddison; ironic considering there is a feeling (not entirely unsupported by SW) that everything that went before was a disaster and "pissed up against the wall" . Good job his predecessors got some things right.
  7. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ukun8nc5Y8U No idea how to create a clicky. Funny though.
  8. Would be hard pressed to find a Portuguese international that wasn''t represented by GestiFute. Our own NO is too.
  9. This has to be the most tedious theme on this message board. Pick an agenda, then pick random clubs to support it. Birmingham, Bolton , Portsmouth , Villa or Man City, Bournemouth , Chelsea , Southampton. You can use those below you as an example, but not those above you because either a) it wont last , or b) we can never be like them. The really interesting ones are Fulham and Wolves, who have appeared in everyone''s list at some point, and now don''t get used by anyone.
  10. i should say MAY HAVE included significant bonuses as these were possibly paid before financial year end 2015 - triggered by the promotion in May . I don''t know either way and not sure whether this would be identified by the accounts.
  11. The wages in the premier league season included significant bonuses for promotion from the previous year. We''ve had this discussion before I''m sure.
  12. Yes i read it, and instantly forgotten most of it. Its on my kindle along with Harry Redknap and George Best, both of which are much better. . Nowhere near as good as Iwans. Complete tangent but the most boring Autobiography I''ve ever read, sport or otherwise, was Steve Redgrave. Most chapters were: I got up early. Trained all day. Went to the Olympics. Won. Repeat. I was so disappointed
  13. Too much is made of “Relegation Clauses” within contracts. Whilst contracts are supposed to be taken out in parity , of course in many cases one party has a stronger hand than the other. The Club once said that all contracts had relegation clauses in them. I suspect what that meant was all contracts have some provision in them that is effected by relegation, but this could include simply not getting a bonus that you would have got by staying up. Therefore, technically, the premise is true, but not all contracts will have the mythical 40% reduction that I have seen mentioned on here . And even if a contract does have it, if the player is in demand , he can simply go back in and re negotiate. John Ruddy actually secured a pay rise after relegation when Chelsea came knocking. Look at the PFA website and you will see the intricacies of player contracts. Years ago there was such a thing as a standard PFA players contract, but more and more the agent will want their own wordings. Even the now infamous trigger clauses , as made famous by Neymar, are under massive scrutiny where even the method of payment of fees are significant. Yesterday on talksport , Simon Jordan said Villa will sell Grealish for £25-30m. But Spurs have apparently written a cheque – cash – for £14m. Would the circumstances Villa find themselves in have an effect. Probably yes. Would Grealish sign a contract with Southampton without a relegation trigger ? Probably not. So again, the individual circumstances are what is key here, and no two contracts will be identical. Selling the low hanging fruit is easy – particularly as the Fans never really know how much the club got for selling the registration of a player. The lauded “getting them off the wageroll” is one way of looking at it, but giving the player away (Jerome) for less than his probable market value isn’t rocket science. Selling Naismith and Jarvis is the tricky bit . If you want a good , sought after player , the odds are there will be clauses loaded in the players favour in many ways including relegation.
  14. Icecream Snow GPs Beard Spain got knocked out because their players didn''t apply the system as they have in the past. The team that won the World Cup and the Euros, would have beaten Russia yesterday - the high press, off the ball movement is all massively affected by fatigue, and losing an exponent like Iniesta to age played a huge part. Looking back at their 2014 squad, they had Fernando Torres, David Villa and Diego Costa was third choice. In 2018, Diego Costa was last man standing. In 2014, they had David Silva, Juan Mata and Santi Carzola (though I think Mata had to pull out) in their squad. Add to that the natural aging of the likes of Iniesta, and losses of Xavi Alonso amongst others, with very little coming through to take their place. I don''t think it''s the system, just that Spain had an abundance of top quality talent, and they''ve got from having incredible strength in depth, to aging players past their prime, and a lack of quality youngsters to replace them. Really interesting points Icecream. Agree entirely about the quality of the players . No doubt the age of the Spanish team had a lot to do with them going out, rather than the style of play. Last season Farke went through some interesting processes. For example he wants to keep the full backs wide. In so doing he stretches his centre backs. So for a while he goes to a back three, leaving the "full backs" to play in a five out of possession , but as a wide attacking player (Pinto , Jamal) in possession. But when he played a four , he was lost. Farke has a desired shape and last year had players not suited for the shape, or a squad that could be flexible enough. I think he will try and stick to a three particularly at home and has signed Marshall with this in mind . Away from home you can bank up the five, play three/four in the middle , allow the wing backs to expand BUT this needs a level of fitness which he is working on with twice daily training regime. Because you need to press and deny space, as well as expanding and creating space over 90 minutes. If this doesn''t work, or we get out thought by the opposition manager (which happened at home a lot) we have just got rid of two of our get out of jail cards , in Murphy and Maddison.
  15. Football , like anything else, goes in fashions, and this is best illustrated by the FA coaching manuals. When I did my badges, in the early 2000''s, the legacy of Charles Hughes and Graham Taylor was fading. You did still have (and do still have ) coaches working to this system, but the successes of Arsenal and Barca were beginning to lead to lots of delegations from the FA watching the possession based, high pressing systems were leading to a sea change in coaching. Smaller boxes, moving the ball quicker , being comfortable in possession in any position were all part of the FA coaching manual. Of course all systems are reliant on the players, and the application. Ajax played "total football" for years. Making the pitch big in possession and narrow out of, is a fundamental attribute to any system. Wimbledon were terrific exponents of it, as were Spain when they won the World Cup. My issue with Farke was the progress made last season. We conceded goals against at home Sunderland from a long pass from the GK when our CB''s were too far apart. And against Sheffield Wednesday we looked very similar. Keeping possession by playing in two thirds of the field, against an away team that are happy to let you play in front and down the side in neutral areas , wont win you games, unless a player like Murphy or Maddison score from shots from 25 yards plus to change the dynamic of the game. The other aspect that even Spain used was the restart - corners etc - where we look poor. The system we play is all about the players executing it. Spain got knocked out because their players didn''t apply the system as they have in the past. The team that won the World Cup and the Euros, would have beaten Russia yesterday - the high press, off the ball movement is all massively affected by fatigue, and losing an exponent like Iniesta to age played a huge part.
  16. Yes there appears to be a lot of money being reluctantly accepted but various folk. And if anyone wants to pay me a few quid please feel free. I promise I wont mind.
  17. Making Plans wrote the following post at 12/06/2018 12:27 PM: So over the last 12 months we have sold, or will have sold - Ja Murphy for £12m Prtitchard for £8m Jo Murphy for £11m Maddison for £25m When there is next a fans forum, I suggest the question is asked about the sale of Jacob, and how the money actually works. I''m not going to betray any confidences here , but do please ask Steve, or Ben , and you will be amazed at what they tell you - I''m sure they cant reveal too much detail but the fundamental principles, including taxation, is fascinating. Anyone thinking we walked away with £12m in our pocket is sadly mistaken.
  18. Just saw Holty at lunchtime in Chapelfield with Mrs H. He looks as fit as a fiddle ! Maybe we can get "Chambo" in the ring with him. I know who would see more stars on their badge if they did .
  19. "We don''t really need to rely on the poorest members of our society being hoodwinked into believing they need to do the Lottery or scratchcards as without them, they do not believe there is any way to escape a life of relative poverty. " A truly outstanding piece of patronising Clap Trap. Everyone buying a lottery ticket (myself included it would seem ) does so a la Charlie Bucket as this is the only way in which I can leave my hideously downtrodden life ? Am I , and the “poorest members of our society” really that stupid? And there was me thinking I did it happily as a bit of fun, and also fully aware of the redistribution of wealth to good causes. And presumably even though the Labour Government didn’t abandon this heinous duping of the proletariat during the Blair and Brown years I assume Corbyn would relieve us all of the “clever piece of Tory politics” immediately he gets in ? Ha ha . Absolutely priceless stuff Dan. Certainly made the lunchtime Gruel go down a little easier. Oh and good luck with changing the Global Tax laws – if only it was so simple as to stop international companies being based offshore. I can see with these practical skills you will have your own golden ticket out of here quite soon. Lend me a fiver can you? OTBC
  20. I''m not getting involved in the argument chaps - but two other points . The Vulnerable are far more likely (and many have) to lose thousands of pounds on Gambling online and otherwise , than buying lottery tickets . And if we are going to talk about Taxation - perhaps we could discuss why LeoVagas (and many other Online Gambling Companies) are based in Malta.
