Derby - will it go ahead?

Recommended Posts

Some advice please about whether you think the game will go ahead. I have had a quick look through and haven''t seen anything too helpful. Anyway, I assume Pride Park will have undersoil heating as it is fairly new, and they were in the Prem. However, I hear Derbyshite have had some of the worst snowfalls of the UK? So, what will determine whether the game goes ahead? Just safety outside the ground?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Again, I apologise if I have missed something, and would be delighted if you could point me in the right direction, Cheers.

Doncaster v Barnsley & Sheffield Utd v Reading have both been called off already, they are around 40-50 miles from Derby, I have some family near Doncaster and they have had over 2 foot of snow and can''t even get their cars off their drives so I would imagine even if the pitch is playable it will be down to how safe the roads and pavements are in the area.

As I''ve said on a previous thread, I would be astonished if this game was to go ahead. The pitch may be fine but driving conditions are treacherous. The fact Sheffield United have called off their game for safety reasons makes me think Derby will do the same.

Some trains on around derbyshire. The snow is very deep. The corner shop are loving it coz everyones doing their shopping there! Gutted was really looking forward to saturday. Evn if it is on I dont think I will get there. I reckon most games will be called off.

Apparently Derby still think it''s going to take place, for the time being at least.  I guess that if it''s going to be called off it''ll be before Saturday - the fact games are being postponed already isn''t particularly encouraging.

Ahh right cheers. [:(]

If it was to be called off, do you have any idea when? Cause I am supposed to be going via the coaches, so what would the advice be? Turn up at the ground if I don''t hear anything?

BGHL, its not very deep in Lincolnshire? 29 out of 30 schools shut in Grantham, bar the one I go to and to be honest they should all be open! Only a couple of inches....

Dangerous conditions and whether enough teachers can get to the school are the main factors included when deciding whether to shut the school, I think.

And yeah Graham, that was rather annoying.

Back to the Derby game. The Met Office site is predicting down to -8 tonight with light snow showers possible. Tomorrow is less cold (down to -1) (-2 overnight) and then +1 on Saturday with drizzle or mist, which may help to thaw any snow on the ground. Yorkshire and Lincolnshire have been hit harder as they are further East. Must still be a chance of the game going ahead.

Mate of mine who lives in Nottingham says they have had tons of snow, but Derby has had hardly any. Its a new ground so I reckon it will be on.

I live in Chesterfield (20 miles north of Derby) we have 24 inches of snow all over with drifts of upto 50! I haven''t had my tickets delivered and there''s been no buses or trains here for 3 days, so in a way I''m hoping it''s postponed

I don''t think the weather is too bad there (I am fairly local and know people that live and commute there), but the hard frost overnight might make for interesting driving conditions, we''ll know more in the morning.

I live nr chesterfield & work in derby. Ive been snowed in for 2 days but im told derby is pretty clear. 14" of snow on m1 today though, i would say its 50-50 but likely to be postponed due to travel safety.

Chesterfield is about 30 miles north of Derby and has been significantly worse hit. I live 20 minutes drive from Pride Park - there''s about 2-3 inches here of snow and most roads have been cleared. At the moment I''d say it will go ahead, but if it turns very icy, who knows.

As I''ve said on other threads and as others on here have said, although to the North and East of Derby there has been over a foot of snow or more, in Derby itself the fall has been quite moderate - 1-2 inches at most.  Pride Park is a well connected indistrial estate with good roads allround, which are easily accessible to the Motorways.  The ground is close to the main railway station.  The ground is also modern with all round roofing.  The ground itself is not in a built up area so snow clearance by a tractor etc is perfectly easy to do so no pedestrain hazards either.

So, as long as there are no further snowfalls and the frost is not so deep the undersoil heating can''t cope (and temperatures of -1 to +1 would imply not) the game will go on.  However for us in the North it will be a struggle by road to get there.

But I plan to go by rail.  If anyone is planning to go from Sheffield I plan to be in the Sheffield Tap at the railway station in good time to get either the 13.23 / 13.27 / 13.47 or whatever time a train runs between 13.15 and 2.00 pm.  I''m taking my 6yo for his first Norwich match (he has only been to to see the Blades before but the derby match has converted him and need to follow up quick) so really looking forward to this.  If we win then we will be real contenders.

Bloody tell me about it mate, my sisters got called off for the rest of the week on Tuesday.....now its clearing up! Very envious, considering I could just stay up all night for the Ashes, and just sleep tomorrow if school was off!

I heard on Radio Norfolk as I woke that the Derby Officials are confident that the game will go ahead. The pitch is fine and they are/will be doing their upmost to make the surrounding aread safe to ensure the game can go ahead. [:)]

Great news! I''m currently in Nottingham, not far from Derby, and we have had no fresh snow overnight and none expected for today, it''s also very sunny so hopefully temperatures will pick up

We''ve had several inches here overnight in North Norfolk so guess the only problem now is getting there!

Another 2 votes for the train from Sheffield here. Spoke to a mate who works on the Wyvern (just across the river from Pride Park) and he says the only problem is that the car parks are all still covered in snow - the roads are fine.

Not wanting to risk getting there and then not getting home though, so thinking about joining the others in the pub before getting the nice warm train down.

Quick tip though - the police in Derby won''t let you near the Pride Park entrance of the station without a ticket, so don''t plan to buy the return part of the ticket after the game...

Cheers

Ben

Further to the Radio Norfolk advice, this seems to be the latest expression of confidence that the match will go ahead:

http://www.therams.co.uk/news/STAFF-CONFIDENT-CANARIES-CLASH-AHEAD/article-2965805-detail/article.html

That just leaves the question of getting there! OTBC!

Nice to see the bosses rolling their sleeves up!  That''s from a bygone era when Cloughie Senior would have had all the players clearing snow too!

Anyway sun out, it won''t be a quick thaw, but for those travelling from Sheff a fairly frequent Cross Country service so getting should not be a problem.  Thanks to Ben for the note about return tickets in advance!
