Which clubs fans create the best atomosphere?

Recommended Posts

I've read a lot from people saying the Norwich crowd don't create a positive enough atmosphere at matches - fine when things are going well, fine when the team has it's back to the wall and is showing fight, but not good when things are generally not working on the pitch. I've often been surprised how quiet it is when I've come back to CR for matches, not always, but quite often.

So which set of fans/club is good at creating positive support, whatever the circumstances?  I always use to think that Crystal Palace fans were good at that, but where have you been that the home crowd has imperessed you for being positive, despite being poor or struggling  on the pitch?

I can't think of many.

Generally the crowds that are the loudest are also the swiftest to turn- generally passionate fans can quite easily swing from one end of the scale to the other in very little time.

Wolves, Leeds, Newcastle are all great examples of fanbases that can be loud and intimidating but that can also be turned quite swiftly. I think it was in Iwan's book that he talked about if you get in front at Molineux then the Wolves fans can actually be more of a hindrance than a help to the home team.

We might not be the loudest but we also generally don't tend to 'turn' on our team as quickly as some.

Everton turned it up when they were struggling.

Leeds likewise.

Coincidentally both teams pulled it out the bag in the final games this season to survive.

I was just looking at average Championship away followings for last season. Surprisingly Boro had the largest (2,260) Away fans tend to be up for making more noise generally, a good start next season could see us up there too.

It will be interesting to see what the atmosphere is like in Everton's new stadium, Goodison is an 'old school' ground where fans are very close to the pitch, I always felt that Elland Road lost some of it's intimidation when the new stand was built in the early 1990's.

The City Stand's Cathedral Area can get a bit raucous at times....On occasion it gets so noisy in there I sometimes can't hear the sound of knitting needles clacking, or the exaggerated slurping enjoyment of Werther's Originals, or the heavy thumbing through pages of 'Hunting and Hounds' monthly, or the high note trumpet farting of those ageing supporters who have had an excessive pre-match meal....You still get that strong stale whiff of botty burp and see folk within the guff target area's noses twitching - like it's a social meeting of rabbits in a packed warren.....

I went to Villa Park for a night game around 1980 and the noise from the Holte End was extraordinary.

Carrow Road in the mid 70's was much noisier than it is now.

I would say though that those fans only 'turned it up' right at the pointy end of the season. My Leeds supporting mate said the atmosphere was pretty toxic in a few of the games after Bielsa was sacked, same with Everton.

I heard the opposite that Elland Road has been unbelievably good, based on numerous callers to talksport/radio 5 and an ex-player who I can't remember who (Gray perhaps?).

And Everton, well come on - they've really pulled it out the bag and got behind their team.  Wish we had Lamps here to pump the crowd up really, but it seems everyone in Norwich hates him, and we were never 'cool' enough anyway.  *sulks*

If you want a lively crowd you've got to take the rough with the smooth, If you're doing your job as fans then it's only fair that you get to air your disapproval at the team if they're not performing.   This is the whole problem with us as a club, timid and happy to accept mediocrity.

You just can't deny that any of those that pulled out and survived this season (Leeds, Newcastle, Everton etc.) all had fantastic support.  We're just so pedestrian, but then that's probably why it's a nice place to live as we're pretty chilled generally round these parts.

Back then half the crowd did not spend a lot of the game staring at mobile phones. 😂

I think we agree- those fans did a great job. I think the question from LDC (or how I interpreted it) is which fanbases are consistently positive and create a great atmosphere no matter what. I don't think those fanbases really exist.

I interpreted it as which fanbases come to the fore when the chips are down, or backs against the wall.

But yes, what you say is true - it's basically an impossibility to have fire that doesn't burn.

Our fans have been pretty poor atmosphere wise all season at home (me included, of course). Even at the start under Farke, coming back from covid, it was bang average.

I go to quite a lot of matches in all leagues that don't involve Norwich (I have lots of friends who support a variety of clubs) and the one chant common to all is the away fans singing "Is this a library?".  My conclusion is that it is a feature of modern football that no home team will necessarily be noisy from the start of the match, they all need to see something happen on the pitch whether it is Liverpool or Chesterfield.

I also feel that Sky Sports has a lot to answer for.
In the 80's and before teams would create songs based around their players but in modern football there seems to be a few "tunes" recycled by every club to fit players. Rather than people copying them from away fans they get them from Youtube, Sky Sports etc etc etc.

"Baby Give it up"
"Sloop John B"
"You are my sunshine"

The list goes on.
In fact i would argue the 19/20 season actually had a real surge of original songs and atmosphere from our fan base.
"Park Life" (Farke Life)
"Waterfall "( Farke on a horse, what a great team to support ...etc..etc)
"Yellow Submarine" (Going up , going down)

Covid did not help us but you have to point the finger firmly at the Webber / Club management to show that they actually carved the clubs soul out by selling Emi and firing Farke.
The loss of Farke actually is probably the biggest thing here, I have never seen such a connection between fan and manager at Norwich, its a rare thing as us and Leeds are discovering.

This was nicked from Man Utd, by the way.

They are irrelevant 😄 Fair enough, just adds substance to my previous point that Social media / Sky sports has destroyed originality in football songs.

Edit: Looking at their lyrics its the inferior version anyway

I saw a good one Huddersfield used to sing, rumoured after the last ever Sex Pistols concert in the town, but I digress...

I am a Hudders fan, and I am a Yorkshire Man,

I know what I want and I know how to get it,

I wanna destroy Bradford and Leeds,

'cause I wanna beeeeeeee HTFC...

The Barclay singing Going up Going down against Ipswich was a joy to behold.

Through gritted teeth, but Palace. The supporters group that congregates in their home end is fantastic, non-stop noise throughout the game.

It's actually why I really hope we're going to introduce safe standing. There's a fair number of people who've grown old in the Barclay and really should move somewhere else to let a younger, noisier group get together and create a groundswell of score-no-object support for the team. Making the move to safe standing would be a good catalyst to make that happen.

I was amazed when I realised that “Farke on a horse” was based on Waterfall, it’s barely the same tune 😳
