Striving to make sense of the Ukraine war

Awheelchair-bound Russian man with spinal muscular atrophy has been ordered to mobilise for the war in Ukraine amid the chaos of the Kremlin’s military draft

Oleg Vasiliev, from Moscow, received a summons to report to his local draft board.

“He is not able to report to the military commissar because he moves around in a wheelchair and the appointment is scheduled for the fourth floor,” the Sota news agency reported.

Spinal muscular atrophy is a genetic condition that wastes away muscles and makes movement hard.

Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, ordered a mobilisation of men last month after his army suffered a series of defeats in Ukraine.

His forces have lost roughly 80,000 men since the war began, but the mobilisation process has humiliated the Kremlin instead of generating a new supply of soldiers for the front line.

russia launched multiple missile attacks this morning at various cities, including Kyiv, during the morning rush hour.

No military value to the target, just callous rage - which has been their MO for generations

Here, they strike a footbridge in Kyiv with their highest precision missile - which they don't have many of left

Ukrainian military say that 75 missiles were launched with 41 being shot down.

75 missiles at non-military targets.

Almost certainly an over exaggeration but the point still remains these are civilian non-military targets - much the same as happened in Syria (of which we did nothing).

So Russia attacks indiscriminately all those supposed Russian citizens it claims that it wants to liberate living in Ukraine in tantrum of spite because its loosing face.

Hmm.

Seems a rum way of liberating them to me unless of course it was always a BIG LIE. But then we always knew that.

Best way for Ukraine to answer is simply to carry on kicking the Russians out of Ukraine.

Destroying places he claims are his. Putin is utterly thick and deluded.

He doesn't give a ****. He would bomb Vladivostok if it kept him in power.

News blackout in Ukraine, UK defence secretary rushing to US, Putin declaring martial law in Ukraine.

Unfortunately the signs look bad, the feeling in Ukraine is that nuclear war is going to happen.

I think the 'evacuation' of Kherson is a bit ominous - but stay the course we must.

nope...

not because of any ethical concern..

but mostly for military reasons - what could the Russians target with a tactical nuke? There are no Ukrainian troop concentrations to target (one of the excellent tactics the Ukrainians have used is dispersing their forces and bringing them together at the point of actions - i.e. very close to Russian forces - hence not presenting targets for conventional Russian bombers)..

Nuking a city would be utterly disastrous - and the country is too big to present a clear infrastructure target (ironically such as the Crimea bridge) - they can't target other infrastructure because of its proximity to urban areas.

Additionally its obvious any use of nukes would result in 1) political impact - the Chinese, Indians maybe even the Iranians would turn their backs on the Russian. 2) domestic reaction - even the fascists in the Kremlin might not be able to control the reaction. 3) Depending on the nature/location of the nuclear strike - may result in direct NATO military response.

Which part do you claim is "sense"?

The bit where he's accusing Ukraine of planning to detonate a dirty bomb?

Maybe how russia isn't a "bad country"?

Or perhaps it's the tired old diatribe about western hegemony and how russia is merely defending itself from the "cosmopolitan elite"?

"To be honest, I just now thought about this: frankly, the only real, such a serious guarantor of Ukrainian statehood, sovereignty and territorial integrity could be only Russia, which created today's Ukraine."

-Putin, today, talking more "sense".

Ironically, that's what Russia signed up to in the Budapest memorandum.

Key part being "only".

In their eyes, russia giveth and russia taketh away.
