There is a voluntary code but there is no actual ban.
All the Germans 1,081 Posted March 11, 2021 Haven't we got something (anything?) more important to focus on? Don't go half arsed, either make gambling illegal and therefore ban sponsorships or leave it as perfectly legal activity and drop the faux outrage to it. It's either wrong, or it's right, it can't be both.
hogesar 9,722 Posted March 11, 2021 I have no problem with betting companies on shirts other than their logo's are typically completely unsuited to football shirts and look tacky!

It's either wrong, or it's right, it can't be both. Completely disagree with this sentiment. My primary concern is the constant bombardment of gambling ads on young supporters, mainly children, it all over the social media of clubs, in every photo of their favourite players in the media. It completely normalises the idea of people throwing their money on bets every weekend before tuning into football; this is the world that teenagers today are growing up in. It isn't a legal activity for children is it. Just to turn the tables on you, I'd be interested to know where you draw the line, would you be happy if PornHub.com was our sponsor? Presumably not? But that doesn't mean that you think PornHub.com should be banned as a website. Percentage of people that think PornHub.com should be deleted from the internet is probably quite small, percentage of people that would object to it on the front of their teams shirt probably very high, that's your moral argument out of the window. Completely unnecessary to make gambling illegal in order to limit where gambling companies can place their logos. Greavsy 2,421 Posted March 11, 2021 The problem with banning it - like all things - it will just make it go underground. At least being in the open it can be regulated etc. People will always find a way.
keelansgrandad 6,679 Posted March 11, 2021 If alcohol was invented today, it would probably be deemed illegal after lengthy studies on its effects. Yet we have plenty of sponsorship deals and advertising. Morally, we can number any amount of sponsors that could be questioned. I don't really think we need sponsorship. It hasn't helped bring down the cost. So it ultimately has gone on player's wages and agent's fees. If it wasn't there, they couldn't grab it.

Between 1957 & 1965 Norwich City received - as gifts - £100,000 from the proceeds of gambling. Everton's success in the 1960s coincided with the appointment of John Moores, who had made his fortune from the proceeds of gambling. The League Cup was sponsored by a betting company from 1987-1990. Good, so football had a perfectly balanced and productive relationship with the gambling industry long before they started putting their logos on replica shirts, which means we can safely go back to pre-2002 can't we.

From last season (unsure how accurate, have seen different figures: https://www.statista.com/statistics/254513/value-of-jersey-kit-sponsorships-in-the-barclays-premier-league-by-club/) Remember hearing somewhere that Aviva in the final year where we were sponsored by the Community Fund they were paying virtually nothing for shirt sponsorship. I believe that to be the case - but no other (suitable) offers had been received is my understanding.
Mutley 79 Posted March 11, 2021 (edited) I had often wondered how much money is raised by shirt sponsorship, thanks for sharing. We really didn't get a v good deal from our current sponsors when you look at other deals that lower end clubs have in the Premier League. I suppose if we were an established lower end Premier club we could double our current deal - e.g. Burnley, Watford (as then). I would rather not have a sponsorship of a betting company on the shirt and for that reason have chosen not to purchase one since Defabet began their deal. I would not be comfortable advertising gambling as too many people that I know have had their lives ruined through addiction to gambling. I think the bombardment of advertisements from betting companies around each and every football game and other sporting events is actually more concerning than the shirts. keelansgrandad 6,679 Posted March 11, 2021 So Manure get £75M a year from Adidas for the licence and up to £20M for shirt sales. Plus the £72M shirt sponsorship. And our total turnover for 31 July was £119M. Where do you start to compete?
