You Tube reminiscing (where you there?)

Recommended Posts

I was scanning through You tube at the weekend and saw highlights of the FA cup quarter final at Brighton 1983 , what a turnout from Norfolk … I think the attendance was around 23k and I am sure that we took at least 10k as we had one entire end ( open terrace of course )

Anyone else go to it? I remember it being chaos, Brighton fans in the corners chucking numerous coins etc at us, the Norwich fans trying to rip down the fencing, dodgy Jimmy Case goal. Then at the final whistle they let everyone out at the same time and there was a free for all on the park behind our stand and this carried on all the way to the train station. Weeks later the played us at home in the league , remember a minibus of Brighton fans getting lost in the city centre , ditching the bus and getting chased through Top Shop LOL

I was there. I remember being absolutely gutted we lost and as you say there was controversy about the goal and I think we had a nailed on pen turned down. I also remember being pleased when they lost in the final!

Chippy

I knew there must be someone on the boards who went! I was 17 , and I have to say one of the craziest away days I can remember , also memories of every lay-by on the A11 having Norwich coaches in it with hundreds of fans urinating in on the road side !

We drove down and met other off the train , but as we had parked the car in a side street it was hell getting back to it , remember walking up a side road and hundreds of Brighton fans running around a corner towards the three of us , they were being chased by police on horse back ,we kept our bottle but as they passed someone clocked we were NCFC and they tried to get back to us , my mate dived headfirst into a hedge !

Happy days!

Maybe you just had to have been there to appreciate how wonderful this moment must have been....[^o)]

Yes I remember it pretty well. I was 18 and we got the bus down there. Can remember standing behind the goal next to a line of police. Spit, coins, stones, you name it came flying through the line of police. The whole game you could see stuff going in our end. Plenty of people had cuts from being hit. I think round the side where the chicken wire was separating rival fans it kept kicking off with fights. And as you say after the game was like a mini riot, with flag poles (which where allowed in those days) being used and plenty of horses I think!

And if my memory serves me well I think there was a Brighton fan stabbed after the game. Please correct me if I''m wrong.

I was there, it was my first away trip as a keen 8-year old. I remember thinking what a shitty stadium it was - the Goldstone Ground.

Went on the train and seem to remember that there were 3 trains jam packed full of fans - to this day i have never seen Norwich Train Station so busy!

Remember it well , still can feel the sense of injustice of that goal.

Remember the police wading in and beating everyone truncheons raised.

Brighton Police were notorious in the 80''s not sure about now.

Not much better when I went to Brighton for the scooter rally either

I was there aswell at the tender age of 17, me and mate went to all the games with above mentioned as mate was certain persons son. saw chris 2 days ago but we talked about Aston villa FA cup replay match where he got nicked for kicking police horse between legs for bashing against paddys van. we tried to collect him after match but he refused to give his name and adress so was kept in until monday.

Christ, and people complain about the Police trying to recover even more cash for policing games today directly from the local fooite clubs and then we read all this sort of "fond" memories.  Still what the hell - let''s continue to give money over to the Police instead of allowing "small" clubs across the country to invest in their teams, just to allow some guys to have a few "bundles" with the opposition.  No wonder the Police Federation think they can actually win the argument with squit like this being written.

Keep it to yourselves in the pub guys!

Out in the open if I remember. Bloody raining as well. Travelled up from along the south coast with two others. No worries about tickets, just pay on the gate.Parked about a mile away and couldn''t get back as the car meant we had to go through Brighton fans. No colours but the mood weren''t too helpful with loads of yobs milling about.Definitely robbed on the pitch.

Travelled from Pompey with another matelot. Went in my car and then we decided to park in a pub about 3 miles outside Brigton, have a couple of beers and then get the train the rest of the way.

Wasn''t too bad going in except we were at the station about 20 minutes before the Norwich trains arrived but a pretty scary half hour on the train back as my mate had his Norwich shirt on.

Good day out except for the result.

Do you mean the Grimsby away game that the Norwich coaches were escorted by the police through every red traffic light after the game - I think one of the Dereham Posse Darren Greenwood was nicked on the day  - I maybe wrong but think he ended up on the pitch.

Grimsby was always certain to go off.  Even last time we played them there. Bit like QPR its just one of those games with a bit of history.

Ask Chris if he remembers a german helmet at Watford (game was snowed off) in about 1970 (hope you''re reading this Peter!)....oh, and that Spurs game in the Barclay which ended his fun for a while.  While the PC brigade on here don''t appreciate what it was like "in them there days" when it went off most games particularly at home, CD and BP were legends.  Times have changed "and the species has evolved"    in this sit down shut up give us your money football world.

Oh, and yes this sort of talk should be resigned to the pub so I''ll be in the Murderers tomorrow night to continue the conversation

I remember both these games well. The brighton game I was arrested, not for fighting but because in those days I sported the skinhead look and for some obscure reason was made to remove my doc martins before being allowed into the ground and told I would get them back on the way out?? On leaving the ground they were knowhere to be seen and I got argueing with the policeman who took them off me and he promptly arrested me.

I had to go back a couple of weeks later for court but never saw my boots again.

The Grimsby game I remember because we got a bit of a beating on Cleethorpes seafront before the game.

I was at the Brighton game, can still remember the bits of concrete raining down on us, Jimmy Case seemed to control things in midfield, a dodgy goal and chaos from start to finish. Remember going to the Baseball stadium, Derby around that period for an important cup game and it was a complete no show, remember travelling back wondering how we could have played that bad and it was bad, very bad!

Zippy , you are right Grenna Greenwood ! !!  see him around every once in a while ! you must eb a dereham lad !

Yep a Dereham lad - left in 1983 to join the RAF and now settled in Gloucestershire.

I was also at the Derby cup game - we were all penned into one area in the corner and was rather a tight squeeze but can remember Norwich fans climbing  the fence into the pen next door.
