My First Ipswich Away Game...

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to know from those who have been before, whether it really is as good as everybody says?

Really Looking Forward To It Now!

Always a fantastic atmosphere, we really lift it, the homes fans don''t know whats hit them - however, if we lose, its THE longest drive home ever.... especially after bearing witness to our 0-5 humiliation

When you come of the coach or train it is really loud and there is loads of singing, and it takes ages to actually get to the ground!  Last year I sat in the family area and the atmosphere wasn''t as good as I expected, but this season I am in the upper tier which is not the family area so hopefully thee will be a bit more noise!  You will enjoy it though!  I did even though we lost!!!

[/quote]Is it as good as everyone says?  My abiding memory is of being frogmarched to and from the train station by some apathetic policemen, in between watching us take a hiding from the binmen.  It''s better if you hold your nose, and there is the default bonus - a bit like going shopping in Morrisons - which is that you will certainly come back from Ipswich with enhanced self-esteem.

It''s only good if we win...Police tend to make a meal of it though, and the ludicrous kick-off time annoys me. Other than that, you can''t beat it!

Truthfully? Sorry but absolutely not but its still more fun than most.

The last true ripsnorter of a derby game was about ten years ago when Bellers scored the winner at their place the year after the 5- 0 debacle.  A mad nights entertainment resulting in being chased from the station, ending up somewhere in the Chantry estate (never a pleasure) and getting back to Bury early the next morning.

Frankly since then the game has fallen foul of draconian policing which I am sure keeps certain sections of the ‘happy clappers’ happy but to football dinosaurs such as my good self and the lot I go to games with its all a  pale reflection of what it once was.

For what its worth some Binner mates (yes I know) feel exactly the same and hope, like me, that we get them in the cup and  draw in the first leg so we have to play mid-week to get aback to the good old days, the game fell foul of the Plod a long time ago

‘Shake hands on derby day’ we were once told, absolutely nothing on this earth could be less appropriate on derby day but still there are always loads of new and interesting things to sing about on the way down from the station

This will be my 18th visit to Portaloo Road and I would agree with Bury Green that it certainly ain''t what it used to be. However it is still the one trip of the season that I really can''t wait for. Still get a buzz from the march from the station to the ground with plenty of noise. (Sad really in that I''m now 39!!) April 13th - Bring it on. Canary Ryan - Just let yourself go, be loud and proud and enjoy it.

So many memories going back to the late 60s, midweek at Portman Road, 7.30 kickoff in those days, it was all standing cash on entry, massive queues at the turnstiles, we could see the lights and hear the noise inside which got us even more hyped up not knowing if we''d get in before kickoff.

The 5-0 was 90 minutes of utter humiliation and despair second only to Craven Cottage, but probably my worst moment was the year of Gunny''s howler.  1-1 with less than ten minutes to go, then a backpass from Ullathorne hit a divot just as Gunny swung a boot intending to welly it upfield.  He connected with fresh air and the ball trickled agonisingly into the back of the net as he clawed the turf trying in vain to reach it.  "Oh Gunny, F***ing Hell!" the massed Canary faithful groaned in unison.  I''ll leave the celebrations behind Gunny''s goal to your imagination, makes my stomach curdle to think about it.

Did anyone else go to the one at portacabin road when Jamie dyed his hair and Gunn miskicked in the last min.  That is in my top 3 most gutted City moments with the playoff final and the Fulham debacle.

I seem to remember lots of things getting smashed up afterwards.....

I had to wait until 1973 to sample the delights of Portman Road. My first visit was the Texaco Cup Final that year.

My favourite visit was much more recent when Iwan scored twice in 2000. I''m not sure why but maybe because it was my daughters first visit and the win was so unexpected.

That Bryan Gunn miskick (was actually the atrocious pitch''s fault rather than his) was my first Norwich-Town game, and was excellent from a Town perspective. I was in the south stand that day, one of the ones making your stomach curdle I hope!

I think a young Jamie Cureton played in that game with his hair dyed green (and scored the equaliser), buit maybe i''m wrong?

I made quite a few trips to Portman Road in the late 70''s up to the mid 80''s, the one that sticks in my mind is the league cup game in 1981, we were losing 1-0 with a couple of minutes to go and Louis Donowa equalised with a close range header to earn us a replay which we sadly lost 3-1, cue pandemonium in the away pens and a barrage of coins from the enemy. The last time I went was to the first leg of the milk cup semi in 1985 when we lost 1-0, the atmosphere was a bit tasty that day.

I was there, and never have I been so angry at a gardener in all my life!!!

I can remember half the North Stand ending up on the pitch in front of us dancing around. In those days, the family bit was stupidly given to Ip***t families, and they ended up having to escape rather quickly or be hit with a seat. I can still vividly remember the sound of crunching seats and coins hitting the roof. It was pretty bad as many tried to get out creating a bad crush. Worst of all, they let the shellsuit wearing fools out of the pitch entrance next to the away end, and we were all allowed out at the same time. No being kept in for an hour after the game. Basically, bedlam ensued. I avoided a punch as I wasn''t wearing colours, but anyone in Yellow was a target. I can also remember bricks raining in from somewhere and lads clambering over a wall to get at the Ipswich lads. Somehow I doubt it''ll be like that again..............not really a bad thing either. I don''t mind admitting that, as a 14 year old I was pretty worried at the time, although it all seemed so exciting after the event. The only time I have been more scared at football was being chased down the road by about 30 lads outside Old Trafford after we drew 2-2 back in ''94!

As for Curetons hair, I am sure that he came out for the warm up with it green, but was told to wash it out by the ref. Is this right or am I just talking rubbish?

Anyway, roll on the 13th.

I''ll be there........eagerly awaiting the standard scuffers "Hold ''em at the station till 25 min''s before kick-off, then steer them to the turnstiles at Portaloo, so they''ve just got time to find their - not gonna sit in it pews"......

I actually, really enjoy the stroll down through and past the woolly finger mittens (hardly a gauntlet) from the station, and watching/listening to the chavtastic mockney monkey moron''s venting their spleens.........classic, and well worth the tedious return at fulltime back to the station......LUVS IT![:D]

''4 times''.........call yourself a fan? Actually, seriously, I have only seen City there about 10 times (winning 3) but I have a terrible admission to make. I used to live and work in Gippeswyk for 3 years and I was given a season ticket through work, so I used to take a couple of disabled men (Town fans) to the home games. They got promoted and I have to sit on my hands and take it. To many stories to re-count here about the good/bad old days when it was a free for all on the terraces, pay at the gate!

Also did the Texaco game. Hitched up to the City and took a Mascot coach from Castle meadow.Better still, Easter 1978 (?). Coach load from North Norfolk, drinking all the way and thrown out before the game. Not great hassle, just legged it back round to the Churchman''s and paid back in again. We''d spilt onto the pitch at the corner and were frogmarched out at the next corner - beside the pitchfork jugglers in the northstandWell remember bouncing away on their wooden terracing. It was mayhem in the middle, hardly saw much of the game as there was so many ''surges'' and hideous pushing. Coach driver even stopped the coach just outside ipswich at a roundabout on the way for us to plile out and chase a handful of binlets who were waiting to throw stones at City coaches passing.Happy days............ naughty, but happy.
