Deano!

Recommended Posts

Well, our very own tea drinking pocket resting brummy has been nominated for Manager of the month! who'd have thunk it at the start of the year?

I for one have been won over and hope the results and form continue, yes we will lose some (one possibly this weekend) but I have all the faith in the world that we will be up there by the end of the season with DS in charge.

We should be up there with the squad we have and the opposition we've played so far. Let's judge once we've played some of the clubs we'll be battling it out with.

The story changes from a) “he’s a sh1t manager who couldn’t get Brentford promoted, only saved Villa because of a refereeing error etc etc” to b) “he’s only performing to the level we should expect”. Interesting to see where it goes next, even if we win the Champs I expect excuse B will continue.

Of course, the next time we lose, we’ll be back to A.

Smith has taken on a hell of a task with us. Having failed to deliver a miracle last season, he had been written off by many before a ball had been kicked this season, and after consecutive losses in the first games there was a hint of toxicity building up.

Five wins on the trot have put that to bed and we're seeing gradual improvement in the play as the season goes on.

Smith has a very difficult brief:

  1. Achieve promotion
  2. Improve the play of a championship promotion-level squad to a Premier league survival-level squad over the course of a Championship season while having little in the way of Premier League-level opposition to develop them against.
  3. Deliver Premier League survival.

On point 1, we seem to be well on course. On point 2, overall, I think we are improving and becoming more fluid as the season progresses. The squad can only play the opposition in front of them. The best opposition we've had this season was Bournemouth in the cup; while disappointing, I think we made a decent showing considering how early we are in the development. I'd also like us to have a good go at the FA cup this year with the hope of creating some extra opportunites for the squad to cut their teeth against higher level opposition than championship clubs.

On point 3, that's some way down the line yet, and would best be put out of the head for the moment, but our somewhat traumatic record in the Premier league the last two attempts makes that understandably difficult.

I've been keeping track of the 'I hate Dean Smith' rhetoric, heres where we are so far:

- We won't finish any higher than 8th

- We won't finish any higher than 5th

- Tea Mug

- With this squad a monkey with half a brain could have us at least in 2nd

- I won't trust Smith until he proves we can win away

- Can we really trust someone who is overweight?

- You can't read anything into it until we've played any decent team whatsoever as everyone so far has been crap

So business as usual this weekend. If we win then they'll unveil the next Deano Challenge and if we lose then I imagine we're doomed.

I recon if we win this weekend the next challenge from them will be....

"well Watford are the team we struggle most against in this league, so let's wait and see what he does against them" or "Sheffield united are going strong, let's wait till we play them to see where we're at"

We have to plan for point 3. Its no good planning next summer. We have to assume we are in with another good shout of promotion. Leave Deano to achieve that but the board must choose an option. The previous choices haven't worked out.

If we win this weekend (and we may), I'll accept that we are almost certain to be up there near the top at the end of the season.

It still won't make me want Smith as our manager.

Why, because that would require you to admit you were wrong?

The first point here has been my stance thus far. 5 or 6 points and good performances from the next 3 games and I'm converted though.

German managers are so last season.

I'll me more impressed if Smith gets September MOM given our favourable fixture allocation so far.

Heckingbottom for me. Absolutely no need for us to all love Smith. He wasn't my choice tbh, but that's not to acknowledge he's done a sound job so far this season. Long may it continue!

I think it's impossible for Smith, or any other manager, to satisfy a group of fans.

We are now a club where we start a season with an expectation that we will be promoted at the end of the season. We're also a club that has been in the Premier league two in the last four seasons and finished both seasons with a dismal points tally.

Dean Smith took on a gargantuan task of trying to keep us up with an already terrible string of results under Farke and failed to produce a miracle in turning a sub par squad in the Premier League into survivors. For the less realistic, that will remain a black mark against him until he does get us back to the Premier League and then manages to keep us there for at least a season.

Overall, the brief he has to be measured against is:

  1. Deliver promotion back to the Premier League
  2. Coach a top-grade Championship squad up to the standard of a Premier League survival-achieving squad over the time of the course of the season.
  3. Deliver Premier League survival

On point 1, he is delivering; on point 2, I think it's fair to say that we are seeing improvements in technical fluidity as the season is progressing; point 3 will be a question mark until we're actually back in the Premier League, but the progress on point 2 supports the notion that he's as good a person as we can hope for to achieve all of the aims.

No. If he gets us up, I'll admit I was wrong.

If he gets us up and keeps us up, I'll admit I was very wrong.

I've already admitted on here that I was wrong to call him a hoofball merchant. That was last season, in extremis, and this season he is trying to play good football. I really don't mind admitting it if I'm wrong.

But I doubt if I will ever warm to him as our manager, no matter how successful he is.

But first let's see him successful. He didn't succeed last season and it's very early days in terms of this season and the tough tests are still to come.

German coaches/managers have been regularly biting the dust.  Only one left I believe the incredibly annoying Klopp, but he now is getting results that will see him next.  Would be a sorry day when Jurgen gets the boot, looking forward it would make me happy.
