Set piece coach appointed

Still some people out here that think Dean Smith rocks up at Colney on a Monday morning, shocked to find Stuart Webber stood there saying 'This is Allan, he works here now'.

Head coach works with Sporting Director on the vision/ direction of the staff + squad. It has always been thus.

Exactly. I think it's more about trying to remove any credit that could possibly be given to Webber, something I suspect we'll see all summer from some quarters.

I think signings will be less celebrated as a result of last summer with people waiting to see before getting excited and others will go down the route of "we should have had him last summer" or "he was lucky again with that one" and generally just attributing any success to luck rather than any level of judgement.

So nothing changes there I guess.

Looks like Smith did all of this on his own.

Ohhh, so it's behind Neil's back that they go, then?  Makes sense, thank you!

Does this include throw-ins? They’ve been driving me mad for years now, Max or whoever stands there looking for somewhere to throw, dithers because he has no options and half the time lobs it towards one of our players who has a marker all over him, meaning 50% of the time we lose possession.

Pleased I'm not the only one who's bugged by this! Throw-ins are a truly terrible part of the modern game. How many times do you see foul throws that aren't noticed by the Ref? Or the ball goes out of play and the taker runs 20-30 yards along the touchline before throwing and it's not noticed by the Ref? Or players off the ball not moving and standing around like lemons whilst the taker dithers and wastes sooo much time before throwing to the opposition? It's just a sh!t part of the game that no-one seems to understand how to execute correctly.

Pleased that's off my chest, I'll sleep soundly tonight 🙂

Absolutely! I think that’s our applications for throw-in coach submitted. I would expect one of us to get the job offer in a week or so.

How many coaches do we need? I would have thought a good first team coach would be good at coaching set pieces - isn't it part of the job?

I don't understand why you wouldn't want more specialist coaches at the training ground?

I genuinely think this is a fantastic signing for the club. He has previously done some really good work with England (notwithstanding the standard of the opposition) and it's an area where we've been woefully lacking for a long time now.

Another poster said it earlier (sorry, can't remember who you are, please forgive me) that he's also an attacking/finishing coach and works with the whole forward line. Which is another area where some players have been in dire need of specialist attention.

This is another excellent signing. Allan Russell is something of an innovator and a highly respected specialist in this area.

We are a little behind the curve in not exploiting-exploring the kind of work he does sooner.

Throw ins - @Nuff Said - very much form part of this role and the data on when and where turnovers are created from your own - and the oppositions - throw ins are revealing.

Mourinho famously stated to everyone in England’s surprise  - as the Dutch have known for years - that corners in your favour can be highly vulnerable to counter attack by good sides, was just just one simple upsetting of the received wisdom apple cart by data.

Set pieces can easily account for up to 50 percent of goals at world cups for example, so a  specialist in this area is not only desirable, it should be de rigueur.

Allan Russell has shared his skills and techniques with many already. He is well worth mining for a year or two at least.

I suppose its win win for this chap. If we exceed scoring from one set piece either a corner or a freekick its going to improve our stats and his reputation. In seriousness, we have been crying out for a specialist coach of this nature for ages. Is Webber finally taking stock of what we need!? and actioning the bleeding obvious!? Because im here for it.

It was certainly a huge gap in Farke's game plan. I remember panicking every time we conceded a corner that they were bound to score if Hanley wasnt in the team. The whole partial man/zonal marking never seemed to work.

With all of these specialist coaches we're going to need more Coaches to get to the away games.

Maybe we could get a specialist coach.

Like a double-decker one.

Failed badly with the penalty coaching. Didn't last long with the England set up after that.

He got fired just before the Euros in 2021, a couple years after the world cup where we won our only penalty shoot out and the first one is some time.

The reason he got fired was nothing to do with his performance. Was actually because he let his pissed up uninsured brother drive his car and they seriously injured someone in a head on collision.

This is from the Athletic.

"“We have agreed with Allan that it is in the best interests of all for him to leave his consultancy position. We would like to thank him for his work.”

The 40-year-old had been fined £2,000 at Oxford Magistrates’ Court for allowing his Audi to be driven by his brother Simon, 39, who was over the legal drink-drive limit and uninsured.

Russell had been a passenger in the car when it was involved in a head-on crash with a Vauxhall Corsa, driven by Danny Moss, an off-duty ambulance driver.

Moss, 43, spent several months in hospital with serious injuries. Russell’s brother Simon was jailed for 32 months after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, drink driving and driving without insurance."

Uh huh... not because he was another useless charalatan feeding off the FA gravy train then?

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

And along come Norwich 😂

No wonder Farke didn't recruit him! 😄
