Jamal Lewis is looking really poor vs Southampton right now. He's just trodden on the ball and left it for Walcott to walk away with. That's about the 6th mistake he's made in the first half.

They don't exactly pass the ball out from the back. One of his strengths nullified and, as you say, he does look a little lightweight defensively.

He did whip in a peach of a cross late in the second half resulting in a brilliant save from Joelinton's header.

Didn't think he impressed for us last season tbh.

So don't see why he'd suddenly look like Ashley Cole at Newcastle.

Got a good price for a player with average ability, he's an athlete but he's otherwise nothing special.

I think that's a little harsh, you don't tend to play at his age both internationally and at Premier League level simply because you're athletic.

I do think though that in quality of performance terms he went backwards towards the end of last season and we did very well to get the fee we did. Jacob Murphy is starting to turn it around though, so maybe Lewis will too. I never thought Lewis was good enough at being strong to be a top class fullback. I still think he'd make a better wingback.

I'm not saying he has no footballing ability, and was saying average for the league he is playing in, he can carry a ball, but athleticism is where he excels.

Do you honestly think he is anything better than average in the Premier League?

Just not sure what people have ever seen in him to suggest that he'd be a stand out for an established Premier League side, or why they'd be surprised that he doesn't look good away to Southampton when up against a Theo Walcott who can match or beat him for pace.

He's never going to be Ashley Cole.

We did very well with the fee I think. Now I'd want to see it doubled for Aarons. That's the difference in quality.

That is actually where he has been playing for Newcastle in the past few games, with Jacob Murphy impressing on the opposite side as a right wingback. Presumably Jacob Murphy has upped his work ethic in order to try and fit into that system as he always seemed reluctant to track back when here!

Good to see Jacob doing well, I often see folks saying that we mugged Newcastle there, but with him starting to put a series of good performances together of late, I’m not so sure that assumption wasn’t a touch premature given his prime years are still ahead of him.

...ditto Godfrey  (not the Ashley Cole bit)

There have been times this season when I think we have missed Lewis's attacking intent. Our attack is less of a threat  without him, imo, and although Quintilla has been useful and poses a threat with his crossing his end product up front has yet to match that of Lewis, as we knew him.

Cannot be that definite  about our defence though. The comment about him being better employed as a wing-back is valid.

Players with the skill, application and character of Jamal Lewis do not fail, even at Premier League level.  We did get a good price, but I also feel that Newcastle did themselves a favour as well. He is still young.

Maybe, maybe not but Newcastle have bought Jamal to make an impression now. They are not wanting to wait 3 years, send him out on loan to the championship, before he makes an impact on their 1st team.

Disagree, Godfrey will be a fantastic player when he reaches his prime IMO.

We that surprised? He was always the weaker of the back three when it came to Lewis/Godfrey/Aarons. I still rate him and think hes decent, but we really did pull the wool over Newcastle to get almost 20 million for him

In recent years on here all players that have left the club for good money to stave off financial problems have been pulled to pieces by posters with the exception of Maddison.

If Godfrey can improve defensively then he'll be an asset to Everton, a centre back who can carry the ball out of defence and pass the ball around a bit is something rare and desired.

Well Josh Murphy and Alex Pritchard went backwards and have hardly gone on to show their quality have they.

Jacob Murphy seems to have done well at Wednesday and earned himself another shot at Newcastle.

Who else is there?

Snodgrass, Ryan Bennett, Grabban for starters.

Well Grabban was fully deserving of the criticism after he refused to sit on the bench for a cup game, left the stadium before kick off and got on a train to London. Van Wolfswinkel famously scoring his 2nd goal in that game. But you said left the club for financial reasons, when he surely left because he decided to force a move back to Bournemouth!

I liked Ryan Bennett, but you also said "left the club for good money", and he was released at the end of his contract and was apparently shocked when receiving that news, so now you've changed the parameters.

I liked Snodgrass as well, and as far as I'm aware there is only one frequent poster with a bizarre chip on his shoulder about Snoddy.

I actually thought Jamal did well. Being played mostly higher up the pitch than we are familiar with he was regularly making himself available on the wing, creating potential gaps inside even when just by being there and got in some decent crosses. Not his fault Almiron faffed about at the first goal instead of playing it back for him to clear, he'd actually got in there ready to do that job, and yes he did get caught on the ball ahead of the second, but he didn’t do much else wrong and the Newcastle Chronicle rated him their best outfield player – with a six, which says much about the rest of them I suppose. Then again we can all see any football match differently to one another, glad we can go on doing so in Lockdown Mk2.

Robbie Savage made a career out of it!
