Sunak maybe the best thing that ever happened ( don’t think so but who knows ), but the thing that matters now is trust. Just watched Gove defend lie after lie, so I guess nothing has changed. Again I say the thing that has changed is that less and less people take the false facts in anymore. Wether she did or she didn’t the majority assume Suella lied, whereas before it would have been ‘ It doesn’t matter ‘.

The point was that for purely political reasons Sunak in May didn't apply the 'windfall tax' as vigorously as many expected - most of all the likes of Shell and BP (who it seems were quite happy to pay!) . Nevertheless £5Bn was expected by the Treasury.

Given that there is now a likely shortfall, it seems to me again, for purely political purposes, that any shortfall should fall most heavily on those that voted for Sunak in the first place. What's the phrase - taking responsibility for one's actions or do we let others pay for the consequences of our mistakes - else we are no better than banks in 2008 - privatize their gains but socialize their losses (I forgot Sunak's Goldman Sachs links - been here before !) 

I suspect there will be much hay for SKS to make when the 'cuts' hit and the windfall taxes prove meagre.

Many thought if Truss had done just the same - energy 'bail out' billions and nothing else she'd of also enjoyed a big new leader bounce - and many thought we'd then be in for a quick election before the dust settled and the chickens came home to roost. Amazingly, she just blew herself up on the other tax giveaways. Lesson there for radical politics if they needed one.

SKS doing just fine. The now essential Tory cuts and tax rises are yet to hit but hit they will. What SKS mustn't do is not to let Sunak claim he is an any way a 'new' government pinning all his problems on some distant Tory past - he's just more of same and equally culpable for the current state of the economy. Labour at the same time must look fiscally sound and a competent government in waiting. No silly policies to scare the horses (or as per the Tories the markets).

SKS doing just fine. The now essential Tory cuts and tax rises are yet to hit but hit they will. Hopefully, Sunak will start to claw back in the polls and SKS will be forced to pursue a braver manifesto, as "We're not as bad as them" becomes less of the massive vote winner it currently is. The state-owned energy company was a welcome start (though, as ever, he has stopped short of providing the details) but if Sunak continues to, somewhat bizarrely, be seen as a safe pair of economic hands during a cost-of-living crisis, Starmer will have to do a lot more than pledge to tweak around the edges to keep a substantial enough poll lead to achieve a House of Commons majority.

The House of Commons has now confirmed that Suella Braverman is expected to make a statement to MPs later about the fire attack at the Border Force centre in Dover and the Manston asylum centre in Kent.

Her statement to MPs will also address the issue of her personal email use, the Commons said.

The timing depends on other parliamentary business, but it should be around 17.00 GMT.

You'd think so but not when you listen to Zahawi ("everyone deserves a second chance"....which he keeps having himself). Plus, Sunak has today stated he is right behind her. I don't think this is football chairman speak either.

It is so clear listening to Braverman and Yvette Cooper just who is the intellectual force. Cooper is really right on her game. She has thought about the issues and how one should go about resolving them. She asks questions which, normally, any decent Home Secretary could answer because she had an in depth knowledge and understanding. But Braverman cannot! It was the same with Patel. 

Also hearing that they are looking at the early days of the government's response to Covid and want to look at WhatsApp messages sent by high level officials and MPs (read that to be Hancock). What's the betting that these have all strangely been deleted?

You look at the current Tory party - Johnson, Truss, Patel, Smug, Braverman and many many others and you really do wonder who in their right mind with any sense of decency would wish to be connected to this shower in any manner whatsoever.

Neither of the two main parties is fit for purpose.  Why?  Because as soon as the EU referendum was called, BOTH of them took their eye off the ball and spent the next four or five years obsessing about Brexit instead of running the country.  Now, Brexit has become the elephant in the room.  Neither party will look at it objectively and identify what's working and what isn't.  The result is an ungovernable mess, and I see no way out of it in the foreseeable future.

Sat having a drink after Golf yesterday and even the most fervent Tory supporters were exasperated with the Class of 2019. We did give them a dig and nobody disagreed. Not even the usual "Corbyn would have been worse".

Of course, they didn't say what was involved in producing just one tonne of it.

We may disagree with some of Corbyn's policies but I do believe he is very much a man of his word and honesty.

Cooper is very good. Forensic and has all the details. Against a government that dislikes detail and can only deal in soundbites and fallacies she should have a field day.
