Foncy hanging up boots

Recommended Posts

The Friends Of Norwich City Youth (FONCY) have been a huge success in raising money for the youngsters at Colney since being formed in the late ninties after the cuts that were needed in the budget following the Chase era when it was necessary to virtually dismantle the Academy. £363,000 raised by unpaid City fans who gave up their time in the name of Norwich City.

Sign of the times perhaps, both in their origins and their ''worth'' now

But a very, very comendable effort that should not be overlooked

Shame of the former academy stars dont give a little something back as appreciation from where they came....

I think I''m right in saying that throughout the time FONCY raised that money 28 boys went on to play for the first team. I guess plenty of others went on to play league football for other clubs. Despite the fact that posters on here like to criticise the academy I think that''s a hell of a stat. Not many boys actually go on to be a Craig Bellamy or a Chris Sutton whatever academy they are at.

I have been lucky enough to get to know some of the FONCY boys through Rays Funds. John Landamore in particular has been a great supporter of the PUPs and is going to give me a tenner on Saturday to pay for one of our weeks. John will be at Colney for the Reading game on Saturday when we present our cheque to the academy. And I believe he will still be involved with match reports and photographs. The FONCY guys devoted a big part of their lives to help the cacademy over those years. They truly were there when their football club needed them.

I''m looking forward to seeing the changes made at Colney for EPPP. I believe this weekend is part of the assessment for category one which is why the friendly against Reading has been arranged. Hope some of our PUPs can make it too.

An amazing effort of people who have really lived the word "support" in supporters, but I guess the need is no longer there as the club has now turned the financial corner.......there certainly needs to be something produced to mark their achievement, a nice engraved plaque at Colney or something more imaginative...

I''m sure there will be Mark.

Perhaps there is no longer a need but that''s not to say there''ll never be a need again. David McNally himself has said football is cyclical. Unfortunately FONCY may not be there if there is a need in the future. But supporters always will be. And others will step up if the need is there. Whether they can step up as high as the FONCY guys have is debatable.

The other point is FONCY brought together supporters from all over. They were united in doing something and actually making a difference to their football club. In a small way Rays Funds does that on here. On Saturday we will be presenting £358 to the academy that was raised by fans all over the world. The £358 is a drop in the ocean but greatly significant at the same time. One day the big bucks will dry up and supporters contributions will be important again.

That''s not to say the club don''t appreciate them now. It''s just to say that football finance is way out of our reach.

I''m going to hang my head in shame here somewhat, despite seeing FONCY and Rays funds (I guess they''re related?) posted on the board here and there, i never actually clicked any of the links in all my time here.

I presumed it was some fundraising for a children''s fund, like the truck rides that happen once a year, and never realised it was for the club.

It''s only now, since i''ve read that it''s ending, that i know what it was all about.

Good work over the years anyway guys, and a shame you can no longer carry on. I just hope there wasn''t alot of people like me who were in ignorance of your existence.

Merely a suggestion nutty, but how about the money raised through the PUPs be donated to a charity now, like Hucks'' or EACH for example.Something with a Norwich connection anyway.

We thought about that long and hard when we lost Billy''s sponsorship. I enlisted the best brains on this messageboard to help me decide what to do. (Just like we do with Rays Funds[;)]) After quite a long period of consultation with some great PUPs from all over the world we decided that our football club was the bond that kept us all together. And while the amount we raise is peanuts compared to the academy costs it gives all PUPs a little stake in what brought them here in the first place.

But there are other things, offshoots of this if you like, that do raise money for EACH. The Canary fans quiz every year to name one. But part of the strength Rays Funds is it''s simplicity and we haven''t had to change it from the day it started.

What was your role on FONCY Nutty, presumably there was some sort of a committee that ran the fund raising events.  It`s sad that organisations like this are folding, I remember when my  lad was involved, his kit, european flights etc were all covered and I think a lot of  that funding came from FONCY.

I didn''t have one Thef. When Ray started the Ray''s Funds threads on here we had to find a way to get the money to the academy. I contacted John Landamore and we became Rays Funds for FONCY. Over the last few years FONCY and particularly John Landamore have always been supportive and a great help to us. John will remain so even though FONCY has virtually come to an end.

I think all the travel would have been paid by FONCY and back when the academy really needed funding the FONCY boys were probably the difference between having it or not.

Ricky Martin''s programme notes are genuine and from the heart. Today we presented last years Rays Funds cheque to him and despite the multi-million funding the academy now has he was genuinely appreciative of what we do and everything that the FONCY boys have done in the past. I''ll put the photo and presentation details on Rays Funds thread later.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this over the years. A fantastic effort.
Well said my dear Purple Canary. It is clear many City fans have donated to this worthy cause over the years since its formation.
