David Raymond Carney (born 30 November 1983 in Sydney, Australia) is an Australian football (soccer) player who currently plays as a left midfielder for Norwich City, on loan from Sheffield United in the Football League Championship and as a left wing back for Australia.

In 2006 Carney was an integral part of Sydney FC''s inaugural A-League championship winning side, attracting the attention of clubs in Germany and Romania, before his move to the Blades in August 2007. Before joining Sheffield United, Carney played for Oldham Athletic, Halifax Town, Hamilton Academical and Sydney FC.

[edit] Career

[edit] Junior career

At the age of 16, David Carney moved to England after impressing in a trial match and signing for Everton There he played in various youth and reserve teams alongside Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, most notably at the 2002 FA Youth Cup final. After not securing a permanent contract at Everton F.C., he left the club in 2003. David Moyes told Carney upon releasing him "...sometimes you need to take one step back to take another one forward."[1] He had brief stints on month-to-month contracts at Oldham Athletic, Halifax Town and finally Hamilton Academical before electing to return to Australia.

[edit] Sydney FC

Carney trialled for newly formed A-League side Sydney FC in March 2005 and was signed to a one year deal after impressing coach Pierre Littbarski. He was an immediate success at the club, scoring twice at the Club World Championship Australian Qualifying Tournament, including the only goal of the final, and again at the Oceania Club Championship to help ensure the club''s qualification for the Club World Championship. On 16 December 2005, Carney scored the winning goal against African champions El Ahly to secure Sydney FC 5th place at the tournament.

In the 2005-06 A-League season, Carney was an essential part of Sydney FC''s success. He made 24 appearances (22 starts), scoring 6 goals and creating a further 6 assists. His dribbling and occasional goal poaching made Carney a genuine crowd favourite at Sydney FC, earned him the nickname "Super David Carney" or "Super Dave" and attracted the attention of clubs in Europe.

[edit] Overseas trials

Carney''s initial contract expired at the end of the 2006 season, and after strong rumours linking a move to Romanian club FC Steaua Bucureşti [2], he was offered trials in Germany at Bundesliga side Mönchengladbach and promoted second division club Alemannia Aachen.[3] Despite scoring twice in a trial match and being offered a deal by Aachen he decided against signing for the club, citing "the language factor" as the main reason for declining the move.[citation needed]

[edit] 2006-2007 season

He remained loyal to Sydney FC and re-signed for another season. A shoulder injury required surgery and sidelined him for the early part of the season. He made 14 appearances (12 starts), scoring one goal and providing 2 assists. Carney played in Sydney FC''s appearances in the AFC Champions League and his good form was rewarded with selection in the Australian national football team to play a friendly match against Uruguay in Sydney, and in the AFC Asian Cup tournament in Thailand and Malaysia.

[edit] Sheffield United

FourFourTwo magazine reported on 29 July 2007 that Carney had left - with his club''s leave - for a trial and transfer talks with Football League Championship side Sheffield United,[4] reportedly offering a three-year contract. This was confirmed on the 4 August, for a transfer fee of AU$125,000.[5] He was unveiled as a new signing at Sheffield United before their friendly game with Nottingham Forest alongside fellow Summer signing James Beattie.

Carney played 90 minutes in each of Sheffield United''s first two Football League Cup ties, setting up two goals.[6] He made his first starting appearance in the Championship for Sheffield United in a 2-0 defeat at Bristol City on 6 October 2007. Carney was the Blades'' stand out player in their League Cup defeat to Premiership contenders Arsenal[citation needed] and has since played a role in their victories against Ipswich, Stoke City, Charlton Athletic and Coventry in the Championship. These performances and his displays in the Australian national team reportedly led to interest from German clubs Bayern Munich, VfL Bochum and Kaiserslautern; and a £2.3 million bid from Belgian champions Anderlecht.[7]

Carney steered Sheffield United past Barclays Premier League side Bolton, securing a position in the fourth round of the FA Cup, with the only goal of the third round tie.

Having been rested for the fourth round tie with Manchester City, Carney scored the equaliser for the Blades in their league match against Watford in January 2008 followed by a slick finish for the equaliser at Colchester United in the same week before flying out to Melbourne for Australia''s first World Cup qualifier on 6th February.

[edit] Norwich City

On 28th January 2009 it was announced that Carney would be joining Norwich City on loan until the end of the season, becoming Bryan Gunn''s first signing as Norwich manager. Carney would link up again with new first-team coach Ian Crook, with whom he worked at Sydney FC.

[edit] International career

Carney made the Australian squad for the trip to Bahrain in February 2006 to play in the Socceroos first ever match in Asia, and made his full début as a second half substitute. Carney played in his second full international against Kuwait in Sydney, Australia in August 2006. Carney played a full game in the Socceroos 3-0 win over Qatar in their first 2010 World Cup qualifier on 6th February 2008.

Carney recently chose to play for Australia in the 2008 Olympic Games, rather than staying in the UK to concentrate on the forthcoming season with Sheffield United, putting a question mark over his future at Bramall Lane.[8]

[edit] 2007 Asian Cup

During the Asian Cup championship, Carney was selected to play in the starting line-up for Australia against co-host nation Thailand in the final game of the group matches. Australia won 4-0 and advanced to the quarter finals of the competition, where they faced Japan. Carney played from start to finish in the Asian Cup quarter final, a match that ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, and remained the same score after 30 minutes of extra time. Japan won 4-3 after penalties were taken to break the deadlock with Carney striking Australia''s third and final penalty goal. During the Asian Cup, David Carney was played at left full back, impressing in both matches. He subsequently played in left back in Australia''s 1-0 defeat against Argentina in September 2007. In his next international, against Nigeria in November 2007, Carney scored from 30 yards to give the Socceroos a 1-0 win.

[edit] Player of the Season

Australian magazine FourFourTwo named Carney as the Socceroo''s Player of the Season for 2007-08 ahead of established Premiership players Harry Kewell, Lucas Neill and Mark Viduka.

Being fair, strikers are usually the most expensive players to acquire (at least good ones anyway), so if Gunny doesn''t feel they can afford a striker of signficantly better quality than we have, you could argue that bolstering our attacking options from midfield is a sensible choice. We still desperately need a couple of experienced defenders as a priority though.Pretty pleased with this loan deal however, and could arguably demonstrate how well Crook is going to perform for us as he massively rates the player.

Why don''t people wait until the end of the transfer window until they begin moaning about who we have and haven''t brought in. Yes we need a striker and a defender but it''s not like Gunn can choose the order in which he signs these players. I know nothing about Carney but i''m willing to give Gunn the benefit of the doubt, especially if chippy has recommended him.

Good heavens - I''ve been reading the same sort of inane comments about the last zillion signings - loan or otherwise - that we have made. Heckingbottom, Brellier, Hughes - the list is endless.  Why do people allow the wool to be pulled over their eyes whilst the club is slowly flushed down the pan??We''ve never heard of him and he is probably not that good. Do people think that us canny canaries are capable of picking the next Rooney out of a rivals reserves? After all we''ve done it loads of times lately haven''t we......Perhaps if it was Arsenals reserves then maybe, but Sheff Utd''s? Sorry, but this is massively underwhelming.

[quote user="astrodyne"]Do people think that us canny canaries are capable of picking the next Rooney out of a rivals reserves?[/quote]We do have history of doing this with none other than Crook himself...Just because we''ve not been doing it more recently doesn''t mean we can''t do it now. Also, just because a player isn''t a first team regular, doesn''t make them a poor player, players like Nani and Park Ji-Sung aren''t starters for Man Utd, but both are good players. Sheff Utd may not be Man Utd, but neither are we in the Prem...

Just what we need an accurate crosser of the ball to put it on.........Ah now there''s the problem.

Whose head,DR''s no he''s a mid fielder, five foot nought JC or five foot nought Lupoli.

Looks like Croft will be off Bell on the right and Carney on the left.

Good wing balance less exposure of full backs.

Formation, good striker up front with Wes behind in the hole.

Could scare a few defences including ours!!

So I think we need a striker and a central defender. I wonder whether our new management team have noticed this[:D]

The following is fron Sky.Perhaps he just needs the right move?

Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek believes David Carney should end his Sheffield United nightmare and leave the club in the January.

Carney has failed to hold-down a regular first team place under Kevin Blackwell, making only two appearances this season.

However, the former Sydney FC winger has been an influential figure for Australia.

"I don''t have to advise him to move because he knows there is no future for him at Sheffield," said Verbeek.

"This is a pity and I still think without playing any regular games he has done very well for us."

Minutes

Carney has notched 17 caps for the Socceroos since his debut against Bahrain in 2006.

And Verbeek believes there is more to come from him.

"He has played most of the (World Cup) qualification games so I am very curious to see how David can play when he is playing regularly."

Verbeek added: "He has a fantastic left foot, technically he is very good and he can run for 90 minutes, but he is lacking real rhythm which is what you get from playing regular games."

make sense .... so he has some tactical knowledge , why didnt roeder think of that .

a natural left footed player will play well on the left better than a right footed ... of the same ability.

purse is a good player a solid defender , that would be a good signing we need. plenty of championship experience , unlike some of roeders untried signings.

Lets give the guy a chance. He could be better than the midfielders we already have. Or perhaps someones on their way. As long as we sign the centre back and striker we need I will be a happy man. Purse would be a good start!

purse isnt that old either 31 , he would have a few years left in him .

birmingham im sure got promoted with him at the back ,

the only real central defendr roeder brought in , is 34 and now injured.

id be happy with that one if it came off.

At last, a genuinely left sided midfielder - ''who can last 90 mins'' . Sounds good to me. Got a feeling Crofty will be off the other way though. Needs must, he''ll be off for free in the summer anyhow so we need to raise some cash for this all important striker.

really lapin should be put out of his misery... poor guy is like a dog waiting to be put down .

now carney is here , if we sold croft for 500k , as much as i like him as a player it would make sense to cash in ,and put the money into a good forward.

andy bishop for about 150k , and another defender would be good.

Sounds like one of our midfielders will be off, probably Croft with Bell taking his place on the right. Will still leave Hoolahan, Patty, (Lappin, Bertrand ) and Carney playing for that left spot though.

We need a striker, a partner for Jamie, that needs to be our priority.

We need 2 new forwards, a replacement for Jamie is needed IMO.

My Blades friends comments are that he is a good footballer, but as the "dickhead" (their comment, not mine) in charge there has reverted to the long ball, anyone who can play football doesn''t get a look in anymore.  The pre-requisite for the Blades is if you see it, hoof it!

The local paper today had a great report of Donny beating the Blades last night calling it Beauty (Donny) beating the Beast (the Blades).  Anyone reading it would look at the CCC table and be forgiven it was printed upside down!  Ah well that''s football!

If Croft goes Bell will play on the right in his natural position.

Can''t be any worse than what we''ve been seeing so a welcome addition IMO.but I agree, we need 2 forwards (ideally little and large), as Cureton just isn''t good enough and sadly never will be again. As for Bishop, we ain''t getting him because he signed a three year contract at Bury yesterday. As for a centre half, I think Purse fits the bill perfectly. He''s experienced, doesn''t take any prisoners and most importantly he''s free!

He doesn''t seem very special, or why would the Blades lend him to us, and do why need another wide left midfielder? Hoolahan, Patty, Eagle, even Bertrand, Bell. Barring injuries will he play much?I can only assume that Crooky knows something about him which isn''t apparent at Bramall Lane?

Thought he made a decent impact for Sheff Utd last season; can''t believe anyone who follows the Championship hasn''t heard of him. In the Croft mould but plays on the left instead - an option we didn''t have before.

[/quote]Yeah, but how many of them are natural left wingers? Bell seems to prefer the right. Pattison naturally plays in the middle. Bertrand is a left back and Lappin clearly isn''t good enough. Carney adds an extra option. It''s a welcome move, but I''d rather Gunny addresses the positions which need reinforcements.

[/quote]Think someone may go Lappin,Patty, or maybe even Belly, but imo just think that Crofty is to much of a fans favourate, the board may think it''s to much of a gamble to let to let him go and is worth more in the attempt to keep our Championship status. The board need to try hard to get us on side releasing Crofty wouldn''t help there current situation.

Why all the Croft praise? He''s improved no-end but my god his end product is dire. I love his passion and commitment but last night shows that if someone wants to give us 500k for him we should take it, use Bell on the right and get some quality delivery and use the cash to sign the striker we need.
