Who is Redeemed this season?

Recommended Posts

It seems to me that most of the squad could be candidates to have a redemption arc this year following last years car crash where literally no one but Pukki came out with any credit. Who is the most likely to go from zero to hero or from meh to not bad.

Todd Cantwell an obvious candidate given his pre season exploits? Kenny McLean the most unloved double championship winning player at the club could he finally turn into a Bradley Johnson type figure. Could Max Aarons turned into Dani Alves and dominate games from right back making the fact most of the premier clubs have chosen not to have signed him seem ridiculous.

I wouldn't say nobody other than Pukki came out of last season with any credit. I thought Hanley had a really good season and led by example throughout, Angus did very well when he came in, Byram was generally good considering how long he'd been out injured for, Idah was starting to look really dangerous when he got his unfortunate injury, Rashica showed quality in flashes, Rowe made some exciting impacts off the bench. Pukki was the obvious POTS, sure, but it wasn't like everyone else was consistently awful throughout.

But I'd say Cantwell is the obvious candidate for redemption, and if nobody comes in for him between now and the end of the window I have a sneaking suspicion he'll start looking more like the Cantwell of old.

Billy Gilmour.

He certainly will lead Chelsea to league and cup glory.

What do you mean I have heatstroke?

I think it's a stretch to suggest anyone except Pukki had "good seasons". Hanley was still the best central defender in a defence that ranks fairly high in the most goals conceded. Rashica was good in spells? Blink and you miss them. Angus played 9 times. 810 minutes total. Byram - again - played a largely bit part in comparison to the rest of the squad.

I think we have to accept the reality that this is not an individual needing redemption, this entire squad needs to consider it their mission to show they are not the colossal embarrassment last season made them out to be.

Hanley is the only other player I would argue had a 'good' season last season. I was merely saying that I thought the OP was wrong to suggest "literally no one but Pukki came out with any credit".

Here are my top 3’s

Most Likely

1) Todd bring his a game and becomes the first name on the team sheet.

2) Rashica stays builds on last year flashes and terrorises the championship.

3)  Lees Melou is able to put 90 minute performance together and looks like a rolls Royce of a player in the championship.

Least Likely

1) Kenny McLean makes the no 10 role his known and bags 10 goals and assists.

2) Josh Sargent bags goal after goal and ends with 25 goals and fires us back to the premier league.

3) Jordan Hugill gets a chance in an injury crisis and goes on scoring spree .

Redeem?

In a sense, Idah could be. He's had two seasons interrupted by injury, last season just as he started to step it up and look the real deal.

I'm not sure any one particular (remaining) player needs to redeem themselves, at various points of last season they were all as bad as each other.

The whole club from top to bottom needs to redeem themselves. A difficult season coming up, with high expectations and I don't think much patience will be shown.

Jordan Hugoals

I would love to read the collective mea culpa on here if that happened. Mind you, even if he fired in 20 goals and we went up as champions, there’d be miserable feckers saying “but he int Premier League bor”.

Cantwell and Rashica.

If Cantwell stays and his head is right, then he has the ability to redeem himself, mainly because his relationship with some sections of the fan base is the lowest of anyone.

Rashica because he should, on paper, tear up the Championship. Not to a Buendia extent, but enough to be too good for the division.

I can see cantwell being redeemed for a couple of months before it comes apparent that he's not going to sign a new deal and will leave on a free next summer.

Idah could be high up, Cantwell's the ultra-obvious one if his head is screwed back on again during pre-season, but I'll pick another name.

Kieran Dowell.

He's always found himself a bit twixt and between. He's not really physical enough to hold a wing - he's not got Sargent's workrate, size, and general awkwardness, and he's definitely not got the pace of the likes of Hernandez, Placheta, Rashica etc. Yet there were spells in the Premier League last year where he seemed to be getting used to Pukki's runs and was good at sending balls in. He'll have to focus his mind on that as Sinani sounds like he's on a charge and it could push Dowell onto better things. Not to mention he's probably our best set-piece taker nowadays.

I wouldn't rule Hugill out either if we play with more traditional wingers, but if we play with mainly attacking midfielders he's never going to look great and is really just going to be nuisance value, not to mention an excuse to give Pukki a breather.

Dowell in the championship can do I decent job but I wish he’d play attacking central midfield instead of wide right. Just doesn’t work for me.
