Usual Monday Q and A now not available

It amuses me that they now call it a debate.

Why anyone would want to go on there and ask Southwell who he thinks we should buy or whether Idah should be preferred to Sargent is beyond me.

Given the parlous state of newspapers finances, and particularly in the regions, the only surprise is that this hasn't happened before.

Plenty of people join in so guess they enjoy hearing Paddy, David & Connor's opinions even if you don't. No wonder ure called Grumpy!

Bailey was the best writer they had and they never replaced him.

This for me is the biggest issue, none of the current boys, as lovely as they are, are ripping up trees with innovative and exciting content. Until they can put that on the table it makes paying for the same level of content hard when it was always there for free.

It's very hard to market the changing of a free service into a paid-for service. If we imagine the PinkUn had never existed and someone suddenly offered a specialist NCFC site for 1.99 a month, many people might go for it. But when you have to pay for a service that used to be free, your attitude is completely different.

To compete with Twitter, Facebook etc they will need more insider knowledge and quality content as breaking news usually appears elsewhere first.

I used to really enjoy Southwell’s My Football Writer stuff. Since he’s been at EDP he seems confined to the odd titbit. But again if the content isn’t there to comment on what can they provide?

I think there's still a lot of things that can be done. Bailey was pretty good throughout the Pandemic, doing some interviews with ex players and things like that or more in-depth analysis of tactics and things. There's always things you could be writing about. I think my only criticism of the current set-up is that there only really seems to be the same content each week (Paddy's pointers etc.) that doesn't really stimulate much, but if they are going to deliver content that is worth paying for then that's fine

Honestly, I've found the Pink un to be the Poundland of Norwich content. It's so dated. A bit embarrassing that other Norwich content creators are leaving them behind.... Pinkun subs on YouTube 6.8k vs Talk Norwich City 24k.

The website here is dreadful with pop up ads everywhere and slow loading times. It's messy. The bad video coverage (constant bad WIFI and poor sound quality on live streams is laughable). The podcasts with the constant notification ping sounds (switch them off!). It's really unprofessional when you compare it to Michael Bailey or even Talk Norwich City. They need to up their game.

Let’s face it, Bailey is a fantastic journo and presenter. And EDP were very lucky to have him. I don’t know much about The Athletic but isn’t it more bespoke an outlet than EDP?

Problem with TNC is I can’t handle the presenters. I’m sure they do great charity work but they come across insincere and don’t appear very ‘Everyman’ to me. The beauty with Bailey is/was able to step back from it all whereas I feel TNC is very self fulfilling and hence why I never involve myself with their output. But fair enough if you or anyone else enjoys it.

Alternatively, I do enjoy Along Come Norwich’s humorous match reviews and podcasts.

I genuinely don’t understand this. I appreciate they want to generate income but their content is average at best, they could, instead of hacking up one interview and spreading into 5 mini stories, just put out well researched, insightful stuff every few days. And even then I wouldn’t want to pay for it when it’s been free forever.

Mind you, it’s Norwich isn’t it?! How cutting edge do we want/need the content to be?!

Bailey was the best writer they had and they never replaced him.

But surely the intention is that if you put it behind a paywall you can do those things as you're no longer behoven to advertiser's. If you're not looking for maximum impressions then you just put out the interview as one article and you can spend that time researching things a bit more as you have less pressure to get loads of stories up just to generate clicks... Whether or not that's how it will pan out is anyone's guess though

This is too sensible an idea Sam! It also requires the chaps at EDP to do more work and probably sweat a little over their output.

I've been a paid-for subscriber* of The Athletic since it came over to the UK in August 2019 and have been surprised at the amount of content I've actually read. Their algorithm for sending over a daily digest of stories that might be of interest works well enough for me and there's plenty more available if you want to delve into the weeds (my wife's Canadian so it's been helpful to keep up with the Blue Jays, Leafs and Raptors for conversations with my brother-in-law!). Even at £7.99 a month I'd suggest it's decent value when you think something like FourFourTwo has a cover price of £5.99 these days.

There's a lot of regurgitated content that's put up on the Pink 'Un (often over several articles/days), and if there's not anything new that they're planning on putting up behind the paywall in future I can't see the value in handing over £19.99 a year - as mentioned earlier, Paddy's Pointers doesn't really have the feel of premium material.

Funnily enough this thread's made me take another look at how much the When Saturday Comes magazine is available for on subscription these days having been a subscriber a good few years ago. Their current offer for a year of magazines through the door at £23.70 which includes a decent hardback book as a free gift is very appealing.

* albeit subsidised via their DFS style 'never to be repeated' sales; £29.99 for 19/20, £1pcm for 20/21 and £17.99 this season.

Lots of sugar coated words but just another way of raising revenue.

I certainly  don't see the football content of the EDP or Pink Un improving or expanding.I am sure NCFC are very protective of what can or cannot be reported on.

Does it mean that without the app we won't be able to access this message board.

'Sugar coated words' Ouch Grumpy. 😀 You don't sound like you can be convinced to try 2 months for free. But to answer your point about the messageboard, yes that will still be available here whether you sign up for the app or not. Any other questions Pete has created a pinned thread now on the forum. All the best.

Will the sports reports and articles still be available on the EDP24 website

The content you might reasonably expect to find in other media and club sources, ie. news, quotes, match reports, podcast/head coach videos, game preview video, team news reaction, team news video and video verdicts post-game will all still be available to consume on the existing Pinkun platforms - on web and on social.

According to the promotional blurb I read the new paid-for site will have ' few adverts '  and the free site will sit alongside. What ' few adverts ' means is anybody's guess.

How I read it is that the free service will be bombarded by even more adverts until we all lose the will to live and migrate over to the paid version 🙂

'minimal ads and much quicker page load times' Or to put it another way, a vastly improved UX compared to the current sites - in terms of the platform. You can make your own mind up on the content. 😀 But try it free for 2 months, no obligation. https://www.pinkun.com/pinkunplus-the-pinkun-app

I think it means the adverts won't be intrusive/take over the screen like they do on the existing sites.

I wasn't suggesting the forums should be paid for, just that they should be integrated into the app as well

That may well come down the line in terms of the product development.

Are you saying that there will be additional stuff to that which is already available or are they telling us that it will cost us to read what has been available for years.

Yes. There will be brand new content not currently in circulation on the app as we roll it out into 2022. Not just articles, video and podcasts. C'mon Grumpy, give it a go. 2 months free. You've already missed 2/3 new pieces since the launch

They are going to have to take something away from the free access site, there is already way too much fluff on there for them to be creating even more content that would be worth a read.

Get it downloaded and see for yourself. 2 months free. Guaranteed no 'fluff' on the app (ed: define fluff). Subscribers will get our most read, most watched content available now plus additional new content as we roll out. What would you like to see?

I will miss the forum as that is more of a connection with other supporters and there will be items in the EDP that will be available but I am not too bothered about reading which new player a  reporter thinks we should buy or whether the pies were hot at Spurs, during an hour of question and answers on a Monday.

The pies were not hot at Spurs. It was chicken. No need to miss anything. The forum is staying right here. Keep those fingers typing, Grumpy

The forum won't be behind the paywall as far as I'm aware, that is for additional/in-depth content. You'll still get the forums and basic match reports for free. I don't think they are aiming to lose site users, they are trying to make the content better for those that are willing to pay for it

Nail on head. A better platform for starters. Allowing us to deliver additional articles, podcasts, video and columnists. Wait until you see who we have signed for the start of the transfer window.

It’s definitely an exciting initiative by the Pinkun. Some may have reservations but the chance to read more content by the Archant boys is too good to be true or miss.

I think this is a sign of times and the move is being forced by the fact no one buys newspapers anymore. I mean why would you when it’s all free online.

People can set sniffy about the pinkun content but I think it’s excellent. Yes it’s a bit more middle of road but that comes with the territory of being the local press and having a relationship with the club. I personally be a worried if say especially/pinkun disappeared what sort of coverage you would fill the void it would be much more clickbait type material.

Its obviously moving it’s athletic territory but although the website is fancy and Michael Bailey is good I find the constant use of stats pretty annoying and thought the more in depth interviews from past and present have evaporated in recent times.

I suppose it boils down to the age old question how much are people willing to pay for Journalism.

They're obviously forced to go down this route, so no blame attached, everyone has to make a living/company make a profit otherwise they go bust. With that said I won't be purchasing but wish them all the best as they are decent chaps. I won't be subscribing for the following reasons (most of what has been mentioned previously in this thread:

- There is no content Pink'Un produces currently (this may change in the future) that I would be willing to pay extra for. Paddy's Pointers, the Q&A, and Opinion articles are much of a muchness and basically all boil down to opinion pieces. There is no inside information in the Q&A's whatsoever. I get all that content for free down the pub.

- The reporters need to form better relationships with the players/club to get the breaking news first. Any real breaking news, e.g. new transfer, new manager, etc. I've found out before it appearing on the Pink'Un.

- The press conference articles drives me nuts and the biggest bugbear of mine about the way it is reported. It's the most important article of the week and gives you genuine information as opposed to an opinion. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to read cohesively with twitter posts repeating previous answers and scroll boxes making it a complete mess. Ironically the official site does this really well with a very clear 'Question: XYZ... Dean Smith: XYZ' format which is so much better and an instant quick fix for the Pink'Un.

With the above said, I do genuinely hope it succeeds as it's very important to have local reporters but I fear finance will dictate business just like it does with smaller/larger companies in just about every other sector in business.
