25 man squad

Recommended Posts

As of now we have 16 of the 22 (outfield) players

with 5 others not needing to be registered in the squad as they qualify as being under 21.

So will we sign 6 more players, assuming no one leaves,

or use 4 of the U21s as part of the squad ?

(please note this list is not perfect and may contain errors... the idea is that it is a base to discuss from)

Keeper  -- Krul, McGovern

Defender - Klose, Hanley, Zimmerman, Heisse,

Midfield - Tettey, Trybull, McLean, Vrancic, Thompson, Leitner

Forward - Pukki, Steiperman, Onel, Buendia, Srbenny, Roberts (tbc)

Under 21 - Lewis, Cantwell, Godfrey, Aarons, Oxborough

The thought that you have made this post admitting it is not perfect and may contain errors and is open to discussion shows there is a first time for everything. 😂😜😊

calm down plod

the idea is to avoid the topic being side tracked by the post not being comprehensive and so having debate on that instead

whereas elsewhere posts are intended toward that actual end

do try keep up... there's a good fellow

Even including the U-21s, I can't see us having a squad larger than 25 or 26. We're going to be looking for a lot of utility from some players as I think we're looking a 5 or 6 signings to fill about 7 gaps.

I think Thompson will have to go on loan next season, as I can't see him taking up a slot in the squad, and he desperately needs games.

Hard to see us signing 6.

We look a bit light at full back. Roberts seemingly plays up top and on the wing so give us some flexible cover but I presume only a loan so we have more to spend on signing another striker. Possibly another central defensive midfielder.

So even then I can’t see us bringing in more than 4 (including Roberts). That takes us to 19? I suppose we don’t need to name the youngsters in the squad allowing us to bring in more in January,

The four outfield U21s have shown that they are more than capable, so I would agree that simply signing players because we can does not suggest the best plan - as it has to be borne in mind that should we go straight back down we will be have the same problem as before...............two years of parachute payments to cover possible three year contracts.

I also think we will be looking to sign 'players for the future' rather than ready made players as with Brady, Pritchard, Dorrans etc.

Add up the cost on McLean, Steiperman, Onel, Buendia, Trybul and it suggests that with the right scouting and coaching and we can improve the squad at a far lower cost than before.

ps I doubt we will see much in the way of add ons from poor old Pritchard, gawd bless 'im

We've got one striker on the books in Pukki, so we need another two (if we sign Rhodes we'd want another specialist striker), a goalkeeper and cover for Aarons, probably a long term Tettey replacement and arguably another attacking midfield option.

I'd probably say 6 signings in total, maybe pushing it to 7, but it depends on the utility of the players we bring in.

Roberts rather than Rhodes presumably?

I don’t think we’ll bring in another keeper.

Yes possibly an additional attacking midfielder as well, which would bring us to five in (20/22). If we don’t bring in another keeper that’s 22/25and three spaces empty. I’m not sure they need filling.

Roberts is more a wide player than a striker, so Norwich will certainly still be in the market for someone (I’d be very surprised if Srbeny is at Norwich next season).

Norwich will 100% sign a keeper. No way that any sensible Sporting Director will let the club be one injury (to a player with a bad injury record) away from having Michael McGovern playing in the Premier League.

In his interview with Michael Bailey, Kirean Scott pretty much confirmed Norwich will sign keeper.

I wouldn’t expect the squad to grow by more than 6 players net, but do expect more than 6 signings.

I doubt any keeper in would be more than a loan. The management rate Krul and I can’t see us spending much on this position. I wouldn’t be shocked if nobody comes in.

Yes, Roberts as cover for the wing and can play up top if needed, so one specialist striker also required.

Almost impossible to get a loan keeper in to be second choice. Can’t sell that to player or club. Norwich will get a keeper in on a permanent deal, or a loan keeper who will he No.1.

I suspect a 24-26 keeper will be signed and told ‘Krul is first choice now but impress and you’ll get the spot’. I also suspect that Krul will start the first game but not the last game.

Also have to take into account that no more than 17 can be non home grown. Of the squad above I make it 14  non home so no more than 3  extra unless someone leaves.

Krul counts as "homegrown" because he signed for Newcastle at 17.

I make it 13 "non-homegrown" : McGovern, Heise, Zimmerman, Klose, Tettey, Trybull, Leitner, Vrancic, McLean, Buendia, Hernandez, Stiepermann and Pukki

Blackman loaned out to Leeds as second choice last season, Pereira loaned out as second choice by Man Utd last season. I’d take either of those on loan as back up.

What 24-26 year old keeper is good enough to replace our championship winning keeper and become a premier league regular starter, isn’t going to cost an eye watering amount, and is willing to be told he’s going to have to sit on the bench until Krul is dropped or injured (possibly not for a whole season or longer)?

We’d want someone playing regular top half (at least) of the championship football - so who is going to sack off being first choice at a top half championship club to sit on our bench? A second choice keeper at a current prem club is unlikely to move to us to be second choice at a smaller club. So we’re looking at third choice keepers at established premier league clubs. Why not get them in on loan with a deal to make permanent, everyone wins.

A stark reminder that another goalkeeper through the doors is essential.

This post deserves more credit.

It’s 14 overseas players, plus 3 ‘home grown’, which would increase to 4 home grown if Marshall was recalled and also included.

You tend to be 'on the ball' Bethnal.  You're likely 100% correct here, especially the last sentence.     If you're not right here and we don't get a capable keeper in,, it will derail this roller coaster.  Potentially, we are a good keeper away from really kicking on and establishing our place.   OTBC.

There is much sentiment for Krul in goal for some reason but we get any half decent keeper in and it won't be too long before Krul relinquishes the first choice role.

Hope he's absolutely brilliant for us next season but the evidence so far suggests we need a good quality replacement when he's not able to reach the level required.

Oliveira,Marshall,Franke,Husband,Raggett still on the books....whilst we may want to move them on will all presumably have just got a nice promotion pay rise and would quite within their rights wish to stay put.

Exactly what I was going to ask.

The evidence he’s a very good keeper is on the Pinkuns ‘The champions’ show.
