We also have more saleable assets. It was possible to read that into the comment on the lines of not even listening to inquiries, but equally it may just have been a careless figure of speech.In any event there is a crucial difference which needs to be understood, between an inquiry, which may be very tentative, and may well not be pursued, and a full-blown detailed proposal. As Old Shuck indicates, any would-be buyer who is serious enough to have produced the latter is hardly going to be put off by the first No they receive. Going public would be an obvious next step, along with or prior to making a formal offer, which would then have to be put to shareholders.So as a matter of fact Smith and Jones have never been made a formal takeover offer. And as a matter of a reasonable assumption no proposal falling short of being a formal offer has been made by someone determined and serious and well-funded enough to go public to press their case. Which suggests any inquiries there have been would not have withstood public scrutiny.
