That happened five days before I was born!
Hope you have a happy birthday in five days and the postman doesn''t mix up the Valentines cards with the birthday cards.

I was stood right behind the line of the shot in the Barclay and saw it all the way. One thing that has always stayed with me is the look of astonishment on Ray Clemence''s face as the ball flew past him into the net (if you watch carefully you will see him arch his neck and turn his face to look at the ball in the net).

Justin Fashanu was my all time Norwich City hero - so sad that both he - and John Bond who also features in this clip - are now both dead.

I was lucky enough to be high up in the South Stand that day, nearly right behind it.  What a goal.  He was in the Gardeners as it was then.  I knew him slightly, so had the chance to shake his hand after that one.  Lovely, polite lad.  Such a waste..................

Got to meet him briefly in very early 90''s at Plainmoor, he turned up to watch a reserve match with Julie Goodyear (Bet Lynch) swept into the muddy car park in his XJS, she got out in her fur coat, nose in the air, never worked out that relationship, he was instantly surrounded by kids desperate for his autograph (no selfies back then) and he had time for them all, seemed so surreal at the time.

@Morty, exactly, they were often seen together, this was not long after his sexuality was all over the papers, this was a wet, cold miserable night in Devon. He had just joined up with Ivan Golac (anyone remember him?) and this was Torquay Utd reserves playing in a cup match against non league opposition, which would normally attract a couple of hundred if lucky.

He was certainly a complex character. And his brother was an absolute tool.

I don''t know, but people seem to say fame changed his brother, both were often talked about as being really nice lads when young, think John took his "gladiator" and "crazy gang" image as being real.

Was totally wrong, but a strange time in history, there was so much denial in society as a whole, and in particular football, strange to think but the world has changed so much and its less than 30 years.

Hard to look back and not view things from today''s position though.

Was only 30odd years ago, but different time.

Not that for one second am I saying it was right.

So strange, yet so many were gay, Graeme Le Saux etc, could have helped so many if a few more had come out, but @ Greavsy, hard not to view from today''s position though, back in the day seemed acceptable, one day these will be the good old days.

We have discussed coming out and gay footballers many times on here, but as an aside would recommend a listen to Nigel Owens( rugby ref) Desert Island discs from a few weeks ago, podcast on BBC, what an amazing story.

Most people are comfortable with dealing with anybody these days, whatever their sexual orientation.  In a professional situation (and footballers are supposed to be professional) it shouldn''t make any difference.  Maybe it''s not such a big deal that footballers have to "come out" anymore?  Most people these days just live and let live...and if they don''t, it is they who have the problem, not the people who are gay.
