25 Man Squad

Yeah makes sense. Bassong, Barnett and Bennett are clearly ahead of him, and despite his debut you''d assume Turner will be too as he''s a Hughton signing. Martin and Whittaker can also do a decent job there so we have plenty of options.

Quite honestly, I do not think that I have ever seen a more talented squad of players in the history of our Club and I go back a good bit.

We look a strong outfit, particularly in defense (at last) and midfield.

Another top-class forward in place of the enigmatic Chris Martin and my contentment would be total.

Interesting comment on the first page:

The Premier League Board is currently considering an application from Stoke City to register a

player and, subsequently, their squad list will be confirmed at a later date

Does this mean they''re going to sign Owen or Heskey?

I said "squad, not "team." We have far more strength in depth now IMO.

Personally i would have kept Ward and loaned out Bennett. Ward didn''t deserve half the stick he got, much like Barnett.

you could get away with "squads" of about 16 back in those days though......and going back further still I think we used about 14 players during 88/89 ?!?

GJL. You raise an interstesting point though. The game has changed a lot since then and so it might be pertinent to ask how many of them would get into today''s team? There are a few obvious ones, of course, but many positions are open to debate. IMO.

I''ll have to clue up on that team before I take this debate further though.

I think you''re spot on Broady. But for the sake of comparison these are the 20 players we used in that 92/93 season : -

Beckford

Bowen

Butterworth

Crook

Culverhouse

Ekoku

Fox

Goss

Gunn

Johnson

Megsom

newman

Philips

Polston

Power

Robins

Smith

Sutch

Sutton

Woodthorpe

Unused Subs : -

Minett

Walton

Let the comparisons begin.....

I can''t argue with that and, without sounding like an 1p5wich fan, that was some team. I once saw them beat Spurs 1-3 at White Hart Lane and it stands out in my memory as, apart from being so proud, I''d had a drunken fiver on that score in the bookies near the ground.

I did say squad though, originally, in what would be selected for what is now considered (by some) the best league in the World.

Interesting that Spurs have registered Kane as well (Lukaku likewise is registered with two clubs).

Also, we have most "home grown" players (Villa interestingly, along with Reading are next).  Only Everton and Swansea have fewer registered players.  Everton will struggle if they have lots of injuries or a mass viral attack!!

I''d argue its not quite like for like though as back then there was only 2 subs....therefore you didnt need the depth you need today.......if there were 7 subs back then I''d like to think that David Smith (the name still brings me out in a cold sweat) wouldnt be anywhere near that list??

Correct. It would only be feasable to venture as far back as the golden age of the beginning of the golden age of thePremiership to make such comparisons.

That list of the players used then highlighted some genuine weaknesses that none of us would want on the payroll in this day and age.
