What constitutes a promising 'young' player.

With the news of Kamara's transfer request, I was surprised to learn he was 21 as I thought he was much younger.

Given he is 21 and has 'only' had a one year pretty decent loan spell in League one I'm querying why he is arrogant enough to be handing in a transfer request and if we should even be regarding him as a promising young player.

There are probably countless examples of players under 21 who are established in Premiership, championship and even International level.

If rumours are to be believed we are about to spend £8m+ on Crnac who is only 20.

I'm not saying Kamara wont eventually develop into a decent player but at 21 he's hardly set the world on fire here and I've not really seen much to suggest he will in the short term.

48 senior appearances plus 3 England U20 games,6 goals. So a goal every 6 games. Think we can safely say he's work in progress, and could go either way. If he feels he can do better elsewhere, get the most we can and send him on his way.

Don't need anybody here who's not commited to the shirt.

Not sure why him handing in a transfer request makes him ‘arrogant’. It may be he has handed in a request as he’s been told that he won’t feature much for Norwich this season and thus wants to move on to play more football. This could be moving to a ‘lower club’ in order to get games.

As you say he is 21 and he now needs to play so being a back-up at Norwich isn’t going to help his career, there is no suggestion that he has handed in the request as he feels he’s out grown Norwich.

It looks like he’s slipped behind Forsyth, PinkUn saying if Rowe leaves he’ll be replaced and the Croatian striker also plays left wing. If Kamara has slipped down to potentially 4th choice on the left wing then he’s probably right to ask to move on.

i imagine as he handed the request in it will be either ,

the club want he to go out loan again and he doesn't want that ,he wants sign for a club and be 1st teamer and settle down ,

maybe the club will not allow a loan and want him as back up where he will hardly play ,

Maybe he thinks he will not get a chance here so wants to go and get on with his career

My bet is on him just enjoying being well liked by the Portsmouth fans and fitting in well in their dressing room. I think the exact same happened with Bali Mumba at Plymouth.

If it is that, then I have to respect it really.

Its the poundshop version of that time Darren Huckerby rejected better offers to sign for us after being a rapport with our fans.

If you did a one year secondment at work, enjoyed the new department more than your usual role, and that department wanted to keep you at the end of that year, then you'd tried to secure a permanent role in that team wouldn't you. Sometimes we forget that football player is a job. An incredibly well paid one with the chance of adulation and fame, but still just a job.

Other clubs coming in for you with a substantial bid is my criteria. Maybe 80% of players that leave us in my experience do not go on to better things, but they only realise their mistake in hindsight.

Anyone under 21 or 23 I suppose.

I use the term 'anyone' as I can't see why you'd have a young player on the books who wasn't 'promising'.

Whether they realise that promise or potential is another matter of course.

"Promising young player" is one of those "vague concepts" beloved of linguistics and philosophy professors. There is no way to nail down a precise definition. It is perhaps best understood as the expression of an expectation that a young player shows definite potential to improve beyond their current level of performance, and excel beyond what might be deemed average for his peers.

Middleton? Went to Rangers when he was about 18, now plays for St Mirren I believe. Not progressed at all, maybe even gone backwards.

The description of arrogant would seem to suggest Kamara thinks he is too good for us.   Not sure that is the case, he just wants to play football and considres it unlikely here.

Also there is a lot of turmoil in the camp currently, I think there was a lot of loyalty towards Wagner and potentially some discontent the way he was treated (on the the outside most fans probably considered it necessary, but the players may have considered it differently), my point is instead of the senior pros saying "keep your head down son & work hard" there are plenty of sympathetic ears for the cries of "it's not fair for me...".  All that says to me, is Thorrup needs to get a few of his own players in sharpish to settle the squad.

Now at Dundee Utd. SPL but he is on the bench! I was gutted when he went but Webber got his case right. We got a good sell on clause……don’t think it has ever been activated because nobody will pay a decent fee for him.
