Burnley v Watford off!

Recommended Posts

Called off at 5pm just two and a half hours before kick off as Watford have not enough players to field a team.

So at 10am this morning they did?

This is getting a farce. Need to call a halt to the season for a while.

Just long enough to get Normann and Rashica back to fitness.😉

I'm assuming they probably received more positive results today so yes, its possible at 10am the picture was very different

Burnley have now had two games called off due to covid through no fault of theirs.

I thought one was for snow?

Ah yes you are correct. Senior moment.

Either way, they are now 2 games behind which I doubt they are happy with.

I have a feeling we might have to have a circuit breaker. This is only going to keep happening. I feel for the fans who traveled. I guess the team would have traveled on Monday and only got their results today.

I think as it was the Spurs game i wrongly assumed it was covid related but give it a few more weeks and the PL table will look rather distorted due to fixture pile ups.

That as well, but Watford will now be able to field a full strength team whereas we couldn't in our game.

Leicester have said they have 9 cases but the Premier league have refused to call their game off. Is there any clear guideline on this or are the PL just making it up as they go along?

We'll still be bottom having played 6 more games than anyone else 😁

Let's be honest, we know the rule is pretty clear.

If you're a Man United or Spurs etc, of course you may postpone upon request.

If youre a Norwich or even Leicester put up with it.

Then realise how obvious this looks so as a token gesture call off the Burnley game with only a few hours to spare.

There's a lot of truth in that my man....

They don’t have 9 cases. Rodger’s is claiming that other injuries are “covid linked” because they are arising due to inability to rotate their squad due to other covid absences. He’s not really helping himself/us with such an argument as it looks a bit like he’s trying to get out of the game because they have injuries.

But yes they are making it up as they go along.

This is the PL explanation:

"The decision was taken following guidance from medical advisers due to an ongoing Covid-19 outbreak within Watford’s squad. As a result, the club has an insufficient number of first-team players available to fulfil the match."

I was under the impression the idea was that U23 players could fill the gaps if first-teamers were out. Perhaps in this case the argument was that Watford, as the away team, hadn't taken enough such potential replacements up to Burnley.  We were deemed to have enough players available, by raiding the U23s, despite four being covided on top of a long injury list.

True, buuut total numbers don't really work. If 3 of those cases are cbs and you end up having to play an u23 player it is giving the opposition an unfair advantage. Likewise strikers, goalkeepers. A squad can easily be depleted positionally, not being too specific on any club.

The sad thing is, this would probably be true.

To  be fair I think both Leicester and Spurs requested a postponement which was denied so maybe Man U get special treatment buy not Spurs.
