keelansgrandad 6,679 Posted February 10, 2021 I love the Trump lawyer paraphrasing Biden by saying this impeachment won't bring unity. That is tantamount to admitting Trump brought division. Still I suppose as the verdict is already written it matters little.

Just like Giuiliani but different because he expected to get paid.
horsefly 4,303 Posted February 10, 2021 Watching the impeachment on CNN, utterly compelling. It feels like watching an Oliver Stone political thriller, and then you remember that this actually happened, that Trump was responsible for this attempted insurrection. Truly frightening. Any Republican with even a tiny fraction of political integrity must be squirming with shame.

Any Republican with even a tiny fraction of political integrity must be squirming with shame. I don't think there is an ounce of shame in them. Or else why would you announce before the trial started you would vote not guilty? They don't need all this evidence. That elected representatives had to cower on the floor in fear after the trespassers had been incited to do so and the whole world watched it happen is enough evidence. But we will have the usual, its not enough to impeach him. And it will allow Trump to come out from under his stone and tell his supporters that once again he has been on trial and found not guilty. Of course he will have to.do it through a third party.
Well b back 3,222 Posted February 10, 2021 On BBC2 now, apparently they are going to disclose how close we were to nuclear war ?
Herman 9,780 Posted February 10, 2021 Someone needs to remind the Republicans that if there is no punishment they will leave the door open for anyone to pull these stunts in future, even a Democrat president. Imagine in 20-30 years time President Chelsea Clinton sending her goons to take over the Capitol and attempting a coup??

Surfer 1,547 Posted February 11, 2021 Well as many of them were messaging that as President Trump said the election was stolen, it would “only be fair” if next time it really was - as it’s “our turn” - there’s your Republican “logic”
Surfer 1,547 Posted February 11, 2021 Ultimately the question must be asked - what are they afraid of? What truth are they trying to keep hidden?

Imagine the scene: The great-grandchildren of Graham, Cruz, and Lee sit at the old duffers' knee and tell them what they learnt at school today. Grandchild: "We learnt all about the terrorist insurrection of 1.6.21 great-grandpappy. We watched horrible videos of white supremacists break into the Capitol and smash it up, and kill cops, and threaten to kill the politicians. Teacher said that it hadn't happened since 1812 when the Brits burnt it down". Disgraced Republican: "Oh! What else did teacher say?" Grandchild: "She said it was the president who encouraged them to do it, and that some of the naughty Republican politicians egged them on too by falsely claiming that the Democrats had cheated in the election. She said they refused to do their constitutional duty and confirm the election of President Biden, against the democratic vote of the people. She said they were hypocrites and bad people for trying to overthrow our sacred constitution and democracy. Hey! weren't you a politician about then 'Pappy? What did you do in the Capitol battle of 1.6.21?" Edited February 12, 2021 by horsefly
keelansgrandad 6,679 Posted February 12, 2021 Heard them squealing that they may get deselected if they vote to impeach. So from now on they can cut the bull about doing their bit for the country and finally tell the world they are in it for the perks. They complain and make political again about countries like China and Russia and those countries basic one party politics and then allow a criminal to walk free. I can only think of Italy and Berlusconi where such a crook could be popular.

Notably absent from that list are Mitch McConnell and (surprise) Lindsey Graham. If it wasn't so serious Tuberville would be a hoot. He gets the three branches of the American federal government wrong, and said this beauty: “I tell people, my dad fought 76 years ago in Europe to free Europe of socialism.” Or fascism, as the rest of the world knows it to be and calls it such.
Surfer 1,547 Posted February 13, 2021 (edited) Meanwhile... the Republican Senators will still refuse to convict Trump, but boy are they likely to tear their party apart doing it. That's at least two Republicans - Senator Tuberville, and House Leader McCarthy - who admit talking with Trump during the siege. Shall we call witnesses anyone? è Edited February 13, 2021 by Surfer
Surfer 1,547 Posted February 13, 2021 (edited) BREAKING: McConnell to vote to acquit Trump, per an email to colleagues. followed by - BREAKING: Senate votes to call witnesses in Trump's impeachment trial. So, nice try McConnell, but you and the other Republicans are going to have to twist in the wind for a while then. I wonder if McCarthy and Mulvany and Tuberville will refuse to testify 🤣 Edited February 13, 2021 by Surfer
Surfer 1,547 Posted February 13, 2021 (edited) Oh boy ... it certainly seems that the wheels are coming off this bus..... Senator Johnson (R) picked a fight with Senate Romney (R) on the Senate floor just now after this witness vote, per pooler : “Ron Johnson turned to Mitt Romney and was upset with him, even pointing at him once. Johnson was visibly upset....” The Senate chamber breaks out in laughter after Trump defense lawyer van der Veen threatens to depose Leader Pelosi (D) and V.P Kamala Harris (D) not by Zoom, but in his office in Philadelphia. Surfer 1,547 Posted February 13, 2021 (edited) And just like that ... The Provisionals caved to Lennin’s Communists. The Weimar Republic caved to Hitler’s Fascists. The Liberals granted Boris his GE and inflicted Brexit. And the Democrats just caved to Trumps’ corrupt and anti-democratic Republican Party. I just f....’n give up.... Yellow Fever 3,793 Posted February 13, 2021 I see this as a win-win for the Democrats whatever happens which is why I guess they went for it. If he is impeached as surely he should be then that's a win for US democracy and the Democrats. If he isn't the that’s due to the GOP being in thrall to Trump which will leave a festering gangrenous sore at the heart of the party which the Dems can keep picking at for years. An open goal. It will the GOP that will have suffered a dereliction of duty.
