Peoples attitudes to speeding are weird. I got caught speeding for the first time a couple of weeks ago and guess what...it was totally my fault. I put my foot down early when the speed limit was going to change from 40 to 50 and was flashed doing 47 still in the 40. No excuses and I'll take my punishment. I knew the rules, I broke them, my fault. Pretty simple. -
If Derby finished 7th it has been a failure. The last manager finished 6th and got binned, Lampard then spent a fair chunk of money and has taken them slightly backwards.

Is it possible to love Farke any more than we do??
king canary replied to BobLoz3's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
I'll stand by my opinion that last season was one of the most tedious I've ever experienced. If you got joy out of watching endless hours of a central midfielder standing on the ball, looking around and then passing it backwards then good for you I guess. I know people say we started to look better in the later stages but all I saw was a team who either couldn't score or couldn't defend and couldn't find the balance needed. I was more convinced when we were losing games this early this season that things were going in the right direction- you could see the attacking play had more cohesion and results were mainly being undone by silly defensive errors. Through all that though you'd never doubt he seemed like a strong, intelligent and dedicated individual. -

Had Alex Neil stayed on...
king canary replied to Michael Starr's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
He seems like one of those managers that works best with a small budget. He seemed to be good at motivation but awful at transfers and at times pretty naive tactically. He's young though and it seems like he's learned but no doubt his time was up here. -
I'm fairly sure he's predicted we'd have an amazing season every season since the dawn of time tbf.

Pretty laughable article and a super weird website that seems obsessed with putting peoples ages in their headlines. -

Whoscored.com team of the week...
king canary replied to nutty nigel's topic in Main Discussion - Norwich City
What I would say is that I'll take a team of the week like this with some methodology behind it rather than the usual guff you get from some random ex player who has usually just picked 10 players who scored a goal and a keeper who kept a clean sheet. -

There was an excellent Guardian Football Weekly awhile ago with Ted 'Mixed Knuts' Knutson, the former head of analytics with Brentford. He said that the two positions it is extremely hard to analyse statistically is central defense and goal keeper. -

Yeah, I stopped taking these seriously when they put Seb Bassong in the team of the week the week we lost 5-4 to Liverpool. -

We're really bloody good, if you ignore penalty taking. -
I honestly think Farke likes to play up knocks on press conferences to keep other teams on their toes.

Exactly that. That is his cumulative total throughout the game- so it could mean he had 3 chances that were each worth 0.1 or one chance worth 0.3 etc etc. The fact he's Ipswich's highest XG rating suggests they never created any notable chances.

This graph gives an idea... Pukki's first (where the second yellow dot is) looks like it is given an XG of about 0.2 or 0.3. You can see from how our XG rating leaps after the first goal that was clearly considered a much higher % chance.

The L&G problem was much more about having to leave out one of your two best midfielders- I'd say the question of whether we can play Leitner and Vrancic is more of a Lampard/Gerrard equivalent. For what it is worth I think they can play together, just the style of play has to change- maybe move Buendia more central, go a bit more direct at times etc etc.

I don't know, I haven't seen the stats- not many places post Championship XG so it is difficult to say. Apparently it was 0.8 v Ipswich though. It certainly isn't perfect and to be honest it took ages to get my head around it but once I had it properly explained to me it made much more sense.

As Bethnal says- it isn't about 'you should expect a goal from this chance.' It is about how high the likelihood is of each chance being scored and a cumulative total. So against Ipswich one site has our XG at 1.6 which suggested from the chances we had we should have expected between one and two goals. The fact we scored three suggests that our finishing was good and we made the most of the chances we had.

This is why XG exists though- to actually try and put some form of qualifier on what is actually a 'good chance.' For me I completely disagree about the first goal v Ipswich- he has to take it first time from the edge of the area, under some pressure with basically one corner of the goal to aim at.

So basically if he'd hit it entirely differently 😉 -
When people talk about expected goals or 'XG' it is a stat based on the % of a chance becoming a goal. Generally this number will have been settled on by looking at a large number of similar chances in terms of position, distance, covering defenders etc etc (all quite complex). So the goal first Pukki scored against Ipswich would have a pretty low XG rating as most of the time you'd expect it wouldn't go in- he hit it perfectly into the one part of the goal the keeper couldn't reach with pressure from a covering defender. Alternatively the chance he scored v Leeds would have a very high XG- basically an open goal from 6 yards, you'd expect him to bury that most times.
